A first year junior at just 17 years old, German rider Patrick Gretsch came home the winner today in the Junior Men's World Championship TT over 24km. Gretsch said post-race that "I expected beforehand to get into the top ten, but to win here really comes as a surprise. It is unbelievable. It was a really great moment for me to stand there and hear the German anthem playing while wearing the rainbow jersey. This is great."

Like yesterday's U23 Men's TT, the silver medalist sulked a little on the podium. Lanky Czech rider Roman Kreuziger started fast and slowed in the second half, but managed to finish second, 0'15 behind Gretsch. Kreuziger explained his bittersweet feelings, saying, "I was second in the world cyclo-cross championships (in France last January) and second again today. I'm not really disappointed by that I want to win, certainly, but second place is also a good result."

Just 1'00 behind Kreuziger was another German, Stefan Schäfer, and in fact, the junior time trial was a close affair, with the first six riders covered by 0'28.
