91st Tour de France - July 3-25, 2004Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - July 10: Chateaubriant - Saint Brieuc, 204.5 kmFabulous Filippo! Pozzato wins in St.BrieucBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in St.Brieuc After a week of racing, the 2004 Tour de France still has two long, tough weeks before the final stage in Paris and today in St.Brieuc, the Tour's youth movement continued as young Italian Filippo Pozzato (Fassa Bortolo) rode a superb tactical final to win Stage 7 in grand style. "It was bello, bellissimo; I took a big risk to win today and it worked out. I'm only 22, the youngest rider at the Tour, so this is the best win I've had a professional." With talents like Pozzato, his 23 year old Fassa teammate Fabian Cancellara, already winner of the Tour Prologue in Liege and yesterday's stage winner Tom Boonen all under 24 years old, the next generation has already arrived on the Tour de France's victory podium. Often touted as one of the big hopes of Italian cycling, Pozzato (and his teammate Cancellara) turned pro at 18 as part of the legendary Mapei teams U23 squad. In 2002, Pippo had 14 wins, including two stages in the Tour de l'Avenir. "There was Cunego's win in the Giro d'Italia and all the wins of Boonen this year, not to mention Cancellara so I'm sure something is changing. But it's not so easy to move the champions from the top levels of the sport. I hope that in two or three years us young riders will be able to find our place," he said. Pozzato is from Sandrigo in the Veneto region of Italy and today his astute tactical sense and seemingly effortless ability to cover the all moves in the winning break that got away with 5 km to go resembled another classy rider from the Veneto, Moreno Argentin. "Yesterday I tried to do something but I wasn't lucky even if I was still up front. Today I managed to play my cards right and the legs were good. I was trying to get away for the first sixty kilometres but there was nothing doing. Finally I managed to get into the right move at the end and it went perfectly. When I made my move, I looked back and saw that Bettini had left a gap. Then Brochard went and I countered him." Often called "Pippo" (short for Filippo), the Fassa man described how he constructed his stage win the final two kilometres in St.Brieuc. "You had to have good legs to win today...when I saw Mancebo go, I was pretty much flat out but I managed to get across. Then I saw that the Euskadi rider (Flores) was dropped. I was a little worried when he came back to us in the last kilometres since the last part was really hard." With 200m to go, Pozzato made his move and as Flores pounded the handlebars in frustration, Pippo powered home and crossed the finish line with a huge grin and his arms raised high in victory. In the ding-dong battle for the Maillot Vert, Australians Stuart O'Grady (Cofidis) and Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) went mano a mano across Brittany today, with McEwen besting O'Grady for the points in two out of three sprints. But Stuey turned the tables on Robbie in the animated finale and with a difficult uphill finish in the last two kilometres, the Adelaide man got the better of the Queenslander and took the Maillot Vert back in St. Brieuc with a slim one point margin. "It was very, very, very hard today", said O'Grady, who got caught behind when the peloton split with 40km to go and had to chase full gas to get back with the front peloton. "I managed to get the (MV) back today but it wasn't easy." Maillot Jaune Thomas Voeckler (Brioches Le Boulanger) was pleased that he kept the Tour de France lead. "The stage was very fast today; at the final part along the coast we expected some attacks since the terrain was good for that. So I have to say things went well yesterday and today too so I hope it keeps going like that." Lance Armstrong (USPS-Berry Floor) was relieved to get the first week out of the way with no serious injuries, a TTT win and a one day try out of the Maillot Jaune. Armstrong told the media post-stage Saturday that "The first week has been nervous, dangerous and not easy. Every stage has been pretty long, like 200km. Today the peloton was pretty tired at the end; I expected more spice today." Looking ahead, Armstrong's most-excellent Tour experience showed as he explained that "We're still a week away from figuring out what's happening at this year's Tour," no doubt referring to next Saturday's hard Stage 13 to Plateau de Beille. How it unfoldedIt was a sunny Saturday morning in Chateaubriant, a perfect day for a cruise in the French bocage for the Tour de France peloton, but when the black cloud of Lotto rider Christophe Brandt's positive test for methadone after Stage Two in Namur came to light, his squad pulled the freckle-face climber from the team and sent him home to Liege. Stage 7 started fast and stayed fast and an early break of Giunti (Domina Vacanze), Cancellara (Fassa Bortolo) and Kroon (Rabobank) got a gap before the first sprint in Goven where Kroon won, but was pulled back right away with Phonak on the front of the peloton, but two crafty riders, Dekker (Rabobank) and Marichal (Lotto-Domo) made a counter move that stuck after 55km. The two-up move had a 3'35 lead by the second sprint in Monfort-sur-Meu after 71km and Brioches Le Boulangère was in control at the front of the peloton. At about the halfway point, local rider Frederic Guesdon (FDJeux.com) stopped briefly to greet his family, but the relentless pace (47.5 km/h for the first two hours) didn't give the former Paris-Roubaix winner much chance for anything but a fast bizou or two. Gerolsteiner's bad luck continued at this year's Tour as their climber Sven Montgomery crashed after 127km and broke his right collarbone, ignominiously ending his Tour comeback after Montgomery's terrible crash three years ago. 10km later the skies opened up on the Tour parcours with a thundershower but it was only a brief soaking. After 140km, Dekker and Marichal crested the Cat 4 KOM of the Cote de Saint-Aide with a 4'00 lead (down from 8'30) under cold, intermittent rain with the Bay of St.Brieuc just ahead. As the fast closing peloton hit the coast road towards the fishing port of St.Brieuc via Cap Frehel, the wind increased and Bjarne Riis' troops of CSC went to the front and cranked up the pace markedly. Combined with the wind, rain and up and down terrain, the peloton then split in half under the impulsion of the red and white CSC riders. But all the favourites were there: Armstrong, Ullrich, Heras and Basso as well as maillot jaune Voeckler, while maillot vert O'Grady and Credit Agricole's Christophe Moreau got caught on the wrong side split and had to chase full gas to get back on. With two riders away 0'45 ahead, there was peloton of 102 riders and a large chasing group. "We all anticipated that this part of the stage would be hard," Armstrong said post-stage. "It was scary for a while." With 24km to go and breakaway riders Dekker and Marichal in sight, Piil (CSC), former 2000 double U23 World Champion Evgeni Petrov (Saeco), Prologue winner Fabian Cancellara (Fassa Bortolo) and Cente Garcia (Illes Balears) made an audacious move to get across to the break. Finally with 20km to race as the counter attack had gone off the front, after a desperate 20km chase, the second group then managed to get across to the main peloton. With four superb rouleurs on the move, the counter-attack pounded right past the tiring Dekker and Marichal, who had sat up with the peloton on their heels with 20km to go and were reabsorbed. No one spared a pull in the break and in 8 km, the escape had gained half a minute. FDJeux.com, Quick.Step, T-Mobile and Gerolsteiner took up the chase for their sprinters and the gap began to drop. After 16 km the break was pulled back and immediately, Fassa sent another rider on the attack. Juan Antonio Flecha made a good move on the long drag out of Yffinac towards but his attack was covered. Illes Balears rider Gutierrez went, then Iker Flores (Euskaltel), then Bettini blasted away near the top of the final part of the gradient. He was joined by Scarponi (Domina Vacanze), Spanish champ Mancebo (Illes Balears), Pozzato (Fassa Bortolo), Flores (Euskaltel), Brochard (Ag2r) and Hinault (Credit Agricole). After Bettini's powerful move planted everybody, on the twisting run-in to St.Brieuc, mullet man Brochard made a nice attack with 2km to go, but Flores countered, followed by Pozzato and Mancebo. With 800m to go as the road climbed, Mancebo attacked, but Pozzato got across quickly. Although Flores came back in the last 500m, Pozzato won the sprint easily to take the stage victory with his arms raised high over his head, showing the tattoo of Japanese characters that his spell out his fiancée Chiara's name to the world. Stage 9 - July 11: Lamballe-Quimper, 168 kmAnother up and down stage across Brittany, this time from the Cote d'Armor town of Lamballe to the southern Brittany town of Quimper. With two points sprints and three KOM's, this stage is almost identical to today's except that it heads southwest as the Tour de France turns the corner after a week and heads towards the Massif Central and eventually the first mountain stages. The last time the Tour finished in Quimper was fourteen years ago, when Motorola's Aussie kangaroo Phil Anderson took the winner's bouquet. With a tight finale in town, look for another Aussie, Robbie McEwen to get the Maillot Vert back from Stuey O'Grady. For now. PhotographyImages by Jon Devich/www.epicimages.us
