91st Tour de France - July 3-25, 2004Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - July 9: Bonneval - Angers, 196 kmStrong boy Boonen steamrolls to Angers winA bad luck, good luck crash marred finaleBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Angers Tipped for great things in his first Tour de France, Tom Boonen, QuickStep-Davitamon's talented 23 year old from Mol, Belgian showed his incredible power today in Angers with a fantastic sprint to win Stage 6. It was his 14th win of 2004 season and his 18th career win for the rider that many knowledgeable observers say is the next great classics rider. A delighted Boonen beamed post stage that, "For me, this was a really great victory today. My team rode very strongly and especially my teammate Stefano Zanini was really strong over the last 30km. My team director Serge Parsani told me it would be a dangerous finale and Zanini positioned me perfectly. I had no idea there was a big crash behind us because I was on Zanini's wheel. I made my move at 200m to go and it went great. I like hard sprints for power riders and this one was perfect for me today because I'm very strong." Strong indeed - Now that Boonen has tasted victory, this hungry powerhouse rider will be back for more before the Tour hits Paris. After Robbie McEwen was caught in the last kilometre crash and didn't earn any sprint points, Stuart O'Grady (Cofidis) was runner up to Boonen and racked up 30 sprint points, moving him just past Robbie into the maillot vert. But O'Grady saw luck as a less of a factor today. "I fell three times the other day and I know that this isn't the best way to take the Maillot Vert," he said. "But that's bike racing. The tour has been crazy this week. Every day we have to face the possibility of bad luck out there." Just two points behind O'Grady, an angry and well cut up McEwen had harsh words for Rene Haselbacher of Gerolsteiner, who allegedly caused the crash. "(Haselbacher) did the same thing last year at the Tour. He did the same thing last year at the Tour in Lyon...he rides like a crazy man!" Maillot Jaune Thomas Voeckler (Brioches LeBoulanger) was happy to maintain his Tour De France lead, a decidedly new experience for the 23 year old from Martinique. "My team were happy to let five riders away but we didn't want a big break to go because we couldn't control that situation. Then we knew that the sprinters teams would come into the chase at the end so we had our plan and it worked out. Luckily the big crash was in the last kilometre so it worked out OK. But our team isn't used to defending the Maillot Jaune so we still need the practice staying up front!" Once and perhaps future maillot jaune, Lance Armstrong (USPS-Berry Floor) didn't have a great day at the office, as the five time Tour De France champ didn't much enjoy the thrills and spills of Le Tour today. Early in Stage 6, Armstrong hit the deck after 16km and again in the last kilometre, where he was tangled up in the front of a mass pile-up. "We're comin' in to Angers and they have the barriers really tight and you got 200 guys raging through there at 40 miles an hour. I don't know what the hell they're thinking. You're going to have crashes. We were fortunate that the crash was literally 10m inside the 1 km banner, otherwise we would have been docked half a minute...so it was bad luck and good luck." CSC team boss Bjarne Riis was somewhat peeved post stage by the finish crash, explaining that "It's always like this in the beginning of the Tour...the sprinters are taking too many risks. And (the GC riders) want to prevent any time gaps in the finale." How it happenedOn a cool, overcast day with puffy clouds that looked like dirty cotton balls streaming up the Loire Valley from the Atlantic Ocean on a strong west wind, the Tour De France peloton left the small French bourg of Bonneval in the heart of the wheat growing region south of Paris of La Beauce, called the bread basket of France. Bonneval is the hometown of Tour de France's Assistant Sports Manager Laurent Bezault and he was happy today to bring the Tour home. The two biggest name Italian sprinters didn't take the start today: Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) and Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze), choosing to abandon as a result of injuries sustained in earlier crashes. After multiple attacks in a typically nervous start, a big crash split the peloton after 16km in Villardon. Among others, Armstrong hit the deck, skinning his right knee. He changed his front wheel with Noval and took off without any serious consequences, his five USPS teammates quickly bringing him back to the peloton. "It was a typical early race crash; everybody nervous, a lot of wind, two guys just went down in front of me and there's nothing you can do - you just hit the brakes and I went over them. It wasn't bad. I got a little bit on the arm and a little bit on the hip. (I'm stiff) on the hip. I flipped over and rolled a tire but it's fine." As Lance and Co. made their way back, DaCruz (FDJ.Com), Bertolini (Alessio) and Lotz (Rabobank) attacked after 21 km and were joined by Flecha (Fassa Bortolo), Arvesen (CSC) and Engoulvent (Cofidis) five kilometres later. After a fast first hour raced at 41.5km/hr average speed into a strong headwind, the six escapees had 1'45" on the peloton, led by Brioches. The break upped the ante the next hour and averaged 44.5 km/h into the still strong headwind, building its lead to 4'00. The gap stabilized and the status quo was maintained by Brioches. At Le Lude with 64 km to go, the gap was still north of 4'00, and Quick.Step, Lotto, Ag2r and Gerolsteiner joined the chase. With 50km to go Brioches re-joined the chase to support maillot jaune Voeckler and the break's lead dropped to 2'30 over the chasing peloton. With 28 km to go, Engoulvent made a solo attack and was caught by Lotz, Da Cruz and Flecha. Bertolini and Arvesen were caught in between at 0'30, with the peloton chasing hard at 1'40, and were sucked up by the bunch. But the four riders out front rode even harder to try and maintain their advantage. With 10km to go, the time gap was 0'50 and falling, and it looked like the sprinters teams would pull the break back. But a clever rider like Flecha might make a last minute move as Gerolsteiner and Credit Agricole were winding it up behind. Sure enough, Flecha tried to beat feet with 6 km to go and in a perfectly timed move, the classy Fassa man went solo and the three others just couldn't match his move. Like an arrow, Flecha streaked for the finish through the streets of Angers as the peloton absorbed the rest of the break with 4 km to go. The chase relented for a moment as the front of the field may have thought they had gotten the entire break and Flecha went full gas. But without a motorcycle, there was just no way he could hold off the chasing peloton and he was caught with 1 km to go. At the same time, a big crash just inside the flamme rouge between the narrow barriers put half the peloton on the deck as the first 30 riders sprinted in while the others picked themselves up off the ground. Gerolsteiner sprinter Rene Haselbacher crashed hard into the left side of the barriers, smashing his left leg and chest and head at 60km/h. Haselbacher was taken to Angers Hospital after the stage, where a medical exam revealed a broken nose and three broken ribs. In the last 200m, Tom Boonen (Quick.Step-Davitamon) uncorked a terrific sprint on the slightly uphill finish to best Stuart O'Grady and Erik Zabel, while 0'35 later, George Hincapie escorted Armstrong, who fell for the second time Friday, across the finish line. Since the crash was just within the last kilometre, the peloton were all given the same time as the winner, so no one who was with the main bunch lost time. Principle victims of the pile-up were maillot vert Robbie McEwen, who crashed hard on his left side, losing a lot of skin on his left thigh and both elbows. Saeco's Gilberto Simoni also went down hard on his right side while Tyler Hamilton (Phonak) crashed on his back, sustaining multiple contusions but not breaking anything. Stage 7 - July 10: Chateaubriant-St.Brieuc, 204.5kmThis long stage starts south of Rennes in Chateaubriant on the eastern fringes of Brittany and heads northwest across the up and down farm roads that lead to the last 55km along the Bay of St.Brieuc. There should be a northwest headwind all day until the race hits the sea, when sidewinds on the hilly coast road could break things up. With 97km left, Stage 7 traverses Bernard Hinault's hometown of Calorguen, then ascends the steep Cote di Dinan where Le Blaireau first tested his legs 40 years ago. Then Stage 7 heads along the rocky Breton coast that resembles Tyler Hamilton's native New England to the fishing port of St.Brieuc to finish on the Rue Pierre de Coubertin. After a cool, overcast start, the weather is expected to clear as the Breton coast approaches in the late afternoon and temps are expected to remain in the upper teens with a strong sea breeze from the northwest.
