91st Tour de France - July 3-25, 2004Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - July 8: Amiens - Chartres, 200.5kmStuey saves the day; O'Grady wins in ChartresFrench Champion Voeckler takes Maillot JauneBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Chartres After his best friend and roommate Matty White hit the deck in Liege before the Tour De France Prologue and crashed out with a broken collarbone, Stuart O'Grady was "devastated". O'Grady was looking for a big year at Cofidis in 2004, but the Adelaide rider was victim of the doping scandal at the top French squad and had to sit out over a month because the team management decided to put the team on ice. O'Grady was flying at the Dauphiné in June and today, his win at the end of a windy, rainy and crash-filled stage brought immense relief and satisfaction to the freckle faced 30 year old who took his 38th career win in the pro ranks and his second individual Tour de France stage win in six years (O'Grady won Stage 14 in Grenoble in 1998, and was also part of Credit Agricole's winning team time trial in 2001). "It was a very hard day out there today", explained O'Grady after his stage win today in Chartres. "I knew Voeckler was very motivated and the other riders, especially Piil, would be hard to beat today. But it was a good win for our Cofidis team and thanks to everyone who stood behind us when things weren't going well. We all knew that US Postal would let a break go today, so I was really motivated to go. In the team meeting today, I said I wanted to get in the break today and win. It's easy to say but not to do. "It was a massive release to win. The feeling crossing the line first means a lot more than any other victory. We've had hard times in the last few months...it's just been an emotional roller coaster. I broke my rib in a crash and then my grandfather died in Australia so my wife and child returned to be with my family. I was alone at home when I heard about the team being suspended and it was the ten worst days of my life." But once O'Grady started again after his injury was healed, he felt like a "neo-pro...I was so motivated to race", motivation he showed in the Dauphiné Libéré. The Tour hadn't gone well for O'Grady until today when Stuey decided to take a new approach. "I've had a diabolical start to the Tour so I decided to turn the page and start a whole new page today. My win today was for two really good friends of mine, David Millar and Matt White." Jakob Piil (CSC) was runner-up to O'Grady today and the classy Dane was philosophical about coming second. "Well, O'Grady was very strong today and Voeckler was good in the finish, but he had an easy day as his pulls were not that hard all day, even though he knew he would take the Maillot Jaune. Sure, I'm disappointed but O'Grady is not easy to beat. But I made some mistakes in the sprint...I wanted to attack before but there were no good opportunities." Lance Armstrong won't wear his 61st Maillot Jaune tomorrow, but that's A-OK with the five time Tour champ. "We just let (the break go) and then we knew that the final part of the stage would be less nervous...this finale with a big peloton would be crazy! So now the situation is perfect for us - Brioches has the jersey and tactically it was a great move for us. Voeckler is a good young rider and he's French. "The team was great today. Johan just kept telling them that they don't have to work for another week. They're probably happy to hear that...we tried to get George in the break today but T-Mobile kept chasing him down." USPS-Berry Floor team director Johan Bruyneel was also pleased at the situation at the conclusion of Stage 5. "Today, our strategy was to either keep the jersey with someone who could go in the break or let it go - George Hincapie tried a few times but he was chased then so we just decided to let a break go. These five guys were riding fast, so we just kept a good tempo and didn't let these five guys go too far." One of those guys was Thomas Voeckler, newly crowned French champion from Brioche Boulangère. The 25 year old, originally from Martinique, has been one of the best young French riders for a while and taking the Maillot Jaune today confirmed Voeckler's talent. Voeckler is the first French champion since Stéphane Heulot to wear the Maillot Jaune, who sported the cherished yellow tunic eight years ago. Voeckler, who took both the Maillot Jaune and the Maillot Blanc of Best Young Rider today was astonished by the results of his ride. The young Brioches Le Boulangère rider said after the stage that "It's a little hard to believe it right now. I'm really happy to have the Maillot Jaune; it's something everybody dreams of. I hope to keep it as long as possible." How it unfoldedDespite the poor weather conditions in Amiens, there were an immediate series of attacks, started by Dutch champion Erik Dekker. Behind the bagarre, Sastre and Aldag collided as the traffic lanes converged and both hit the deck, suffering minor injuries. After 16km of racing on a climb outside Tilloy-les-Conty, local rider Sandy Casar (FDJ.Com) made a strong attack and was joined by Jacob Piil (CSC), himself once again on the attack. Three other riders came across, O'Grady (Cofidis), Bäckstedt (Alessio) and French champion Thomas Voeckler (Brioches) to make a fine quintet that had just the right combination that eventually allowed Maillot Jaune Lance Armstrong's USPS-Berry Floor team to let them go. The chase relented but the break kept powering away into the strong headwind and intermittent rain that perturbed Stage 5 all day. By the first sprint in Beauvais after 57km, the opportunistic O'Grady took the sprint there and in all subsequent sprints in Orvilliers and Maintenon. Postal rode tempo on the front but wasn't looking to pull back the break, so the quintet's lead jumped to 16'11" after 90km. Voeckler, best placed on GC in the break was Maillot Jaune virtuel but he still had to get to Chartres to take over the Tour De France race lead. As the peloton exited the quaint village Magny-en-Vexin after 104km, a big crash put five riders on the deck, including sprinter Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo), who banged his left shoulder hard, Boogerd (Rabobank), who was scraped up and smashed his left forearm, Vicioso (Liberty) and three USPS-Berry Floor riders, Azevedo, Beltran and Rubiera. Both Spaniards were injured, with Triki sustaining cuts to his left elbow and Chechu sustaining a deep cut to his left calf. Lance and the rest of the USPS squad slowed the peloton to allow the downed riders to get back, but Brad McGee's back pain was too intense for him to continue and the Sydneysider abandoned after 110km. The go-slow allowed the break to increase its lead to 17'20 after 135 km before Postal picked up the pace behind and the gap stabilized at 15'00. The break worked well together until 10km to go when the attacks started. As the two spires of Chartres cathedral loomed on the horizon, Magnus Bäckstedt started the hostilities And then it was every man for himself. O'Grady had great legs and made a powerful solo move with 4km to go, but Voeckler and Piil pulled him back. As the three diced up front, Bäckstedt and Casar came back and all of the riders were together under the 1km flame rouge. Bäckstedt led out the sprint like a freight train but when O'Grady came off his wheel with 200m to go, the Adelaide rider was unstoppable. Stage 6 - July 9: Bonneval-Chartres, 196kmFriday's stage heads east across the Loire Valley along part of the parcours of October's classic Paris-Tours, then west towards Angers on the Loire River, where flying Dutchman Jan Raas took the last TDF stage win a quarter of a century ago. Although not a tough stage, more wind and rain is slated to lash the 2004 Tour De France peloton once again. Supposedly a sprinters' stage, the weather will likely change Stage 5 into a breakaway stage as today's stage was. PhotographyImages by Jon Devich/www.epicimages.us
