91st Tour de France - July 3-25, 2004Main Page Live report Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 20 - July 25: Montreau - Paris-Champs-Elysees, 163 kmArmstrong atop Tour pantheon with sixth straight winTotal domination de Lance with five stage wins by TexanBy Tim Maloney, European editor in Paris There are not enough superlatives to describe the accomplishment that Lance Armstrong achieved today in Paris by winning a record sixth straight Tour de France. As the strains of the fat lady singing "The Star Spangled Banner" segued into "All I Wanna Do (Is Have Some Fun) by Lance's lady friend Sheryl Crow and her band the Saturday Night Music Club, the sun dipped behind the Arc de Triomphe. Fade to black as Lance Armstrong becomes the greatest rider in Tour de France history. A humble Armstrong declared after descending from the podium that, "It hasn't sunk in yet. But six, standing on the top step on the podium on the Champs-Elysees is really special." Once again, Armstrong spoke of his love affair with Le Grande Boucle, now a six-time affair for the Texan. "The Tour de France is the most beautiful race in the world. For me, for cycling, for my team, for my new sponsor Discovery Channel, I cannot think of not doing another year on the Tour de France," Armstrong told French television. But as for his destiny in 2005 and his new Discovery Cycling team, Lance left things open-ended going forward. "I don't know what I'll do next summer. I suspect I'll be here. It's too big of a race. My only hesitance is I think the people and the event perhaps need a change, new faces, a new winner," said Armstrong. "If I'm here at the Tour de France, I race to win." "We'll see..." he said. Discussing the process of this year's Tour, Armstrong noted that, "We never had a sense of crisis, only the stress of the rain and the crashes in the first week," he said. "I was never able to ride away alone on the climbs. That's the first time I didn't do that, but I was surprised that some of the rivals were not better. Some of them just completely disappeared." Armstrong described the always difficult first phase of the Tour, saying, "The little guys, the pure climbers, (Iban) Mayo, Tyler (Hamilton), the first week is very tough on them, always fighting for position, the wind. There's a lot of acceleration through villages at the finish. This becomes a problem for them after 10 days," Armstrong said. "That's the beauty of the Tour de France. If the race was just 10 or 12 days long, they'd be much better. You have to do it all (to win)." Armstrong now goes into the record books as the second oldest winner in Tour history at 32 years and ten months of age. Lance completed the 20 stages plus prologue of the 2004 Tour in 83 hours 36 minutes and two seconds, the second fastest Tour in history at 40.553 km/h avg. But despite his advancing age, Armstrong still maintains his kid-like enthusiasm for his sport. "I think the biggest difference (this year) is in my head, the morale and the motivation, the pure joy of racing," he said. "It's as if I was with my five friends and we were 13 years old and we all had new bikes and we said: 'Okay, we're going to race from here to there.' You want to beat your friends more than anything. You're sprinting and you're attacking. It was like that for me this year, a simple pleasure." Next on Armstrong's schedule are two criteriums; he races in Holland on Tuesday and Prague on Thursday, then the Breitling Cup two-up TT in Bühl, Germany with George Hincapie on Saturday before boarding a private jet to Austin, Texas, where Lance will re-unite with his three children for some fun and relaxation in August. In September, Armstrong will finish his 2004 season with the T-Mobile Grand Prix in San Francisco, where he may face Jan Ullrich and Andreas Klöden again in the Race By The Bay. Although his T-Mobile team came on strong in the end of the Tour to win the Team GC award 2'42 ahead of USPS-Berry Floor, team leader Jan Ullrich was disappointing and finished off of the Tour de France podium for the first time, ending up in 4th, just 2'10 short of the bottom step of the podium. Ullrich was slowed by a cold in the first week and by cool, rainy weather in much of this year's Tour. The rangy German powerhouse not only didn't find the preferred climate this year, but his condition was lacking as well. Runner-up to Armstrong was the emerging Andreas Klöden (T-Mobile) who was supposed to be second fiddle to Jan but ended up riding to beat the band. Klöden got better and better as the Tour progressed and was one of the revelations, finishing second in Stage 17 to Le Grande-Bornand and third in the TT in Besançon. "I never would have predicted Klöden before the Tour. But you could see he was really strong and skinny in the first week," said Armstrong today in Paris. Speaking of revelations, although he ended up third, CSC's Ivan Basso was one of the high points of this Tour de France. The classy 28 year old Italian won a stage to La Mongie and was strong enough to go pull for pull with Armstrong for the first two weeks of the Tour until he faded towards the end. But Basso will be back and certainly has the pedigree and team support from the impeccable CSC squad of Bjarne Riis to be a contender. Lance's USPS team was a real powerhouse this year. Finishing just behind T-Mobile in the teams category, had the Postal Blue train decided to ride on the Team GC track, there's no question that Johan Bruyneel's incredibly focused nine man team that finished the Tour intact could have captured this prize. With riders like Floyd Landis, who finished off the Tour in great form, Jose Azevedo, who proved his worth in the Pyrenees, big motors George Hincapie, Viatcheslav Ekimov and Pavel Padrnos, mountain men Jose Luis Rubiera and Manuel Beltran, and hard working rookie Benjamin Noval, the US Postal squad was an extremely powerful unit and at no time was Lance isolated too early. Once again, Lance and the Postal boys will take home the lions share of the prizes, with a big-time payday of 578,842 euros coming from the 2004 Tour de France prize money. As for the best of the rest, Robbie McEwen had a fantastic Tour to win a stage and capture the maillot vert in Paris for the second time in his career. "Hushovd was eleven points behind and I was really confident before the final sprint," explained the delighted Lotto man. "I counted on the first two sprints to get some more points. I won the first sprint pretty easily and took an other two points. After that, my back started make me suffer. I was a bit too late to go for the second one. He beat me there so back to eleven points. After that I just rode the rest of the stage in his wheel until 500 or 600 meters to go on the Place de la Concorde. Hushovd went right, I decided to go left. And Boonen was in excellent position to win the stage. I wasn't really focused on the stage, I was just thinking to the green so I could have gambled and stayed longer in Boonen's wheel to pass around him but I had just to make sure to go to the line. I just came across and I wasn't really looking where I was on the line but just make sure I was in front of Hushovd. It's a nice feeling to finish in the green." McEwen explained that, "The last green jersey was more of a relief because I think I was so stressed there because it was my first time doing it. This year, I came to the Tour with a different goal. I wanted to come and win a stage because last year I came to Paris in green and I left absolutely empty handed. So this time I wanted to make sure I had something before we got to Paris. With two stage wins, the stress was off a bit especially with my big crash and a stage after that. I didn't feel as much stress as the last two times. But also I decided I was wearing it for such a long time that I wanted to keep it". France's most popular cyclist Richard Virenque captured a record seventh straight maillot pois for the Best Climber of the Tour de France as well as the prize for most combative rider of the Tour de France. Asked if he would return to go for an eighth climber's jersey in the Tour, a cagy Virenque said: "I'm not sure, we'll see." How it unfoldedAt the first kilometre, Filippo Simeoni (Domina Vacanze) tried to spoil Lance's party with an attack, but this time, it was the entire USPS-Berry Floor squad that brought the Italian to heel after an 8km chase that split the peloton in two. Once Pippo was back in the group, things settled down to a nice, easy 30km/h pace until the first and only KOM on the Cote de Montfermail (km 82) and the sprint in Livry-Gargan after 86km. Moreau took the KOM ahead of USPS riders Azevedo and Hincapie, while in Livry-Gargan, McEwen made another brilliant move to snatch the sprint from maillot vert challenger Thor Hushovd, pretty much sewing up the points competition. Hushovd then turned the tables and took the sprint on the first passage of the line on the Champs-Elysees. A group of ten riders got away after a strong attack by Bettini (QuickStep), including Voeckler (Brioches la Boulangère), Pereiro (Phonak), Sunderland (Alessio), Gutierrez (Illes Balears), Astarloza (Ag2r), Flecha (Fassa Bortolo), Merckx (Lotto) and Kroon (Rabobank). This group worked well together and got a lead of 40", but Credit Agricole brought them back on the second last lap of the Champs. Flecha made a strong counter, but Quick.Step pulled him back and set up their sprinter Tom Boonen for a great finish, where the 23 year old powered to his second stage win of the Tour and Quick.Step's 4th victory. Boonen said post stage that "I would have an incredible career if I win two stages every year on the Tour. But I know it is not easy. Next year I would be satisfied to do half of my results this year. Every year is different and I'm glad with that one and my two victories on the Tour. The green jersey might be my goal next year. I missed three of my sprints in the first week and was too far in the classification to try to make it this year. My feeling after my first stage win was special because it was the first one. Today's victory is a beautiful one, very hard to get because of the stress." Last years stage winner JP Nazon was second, while McEwen was 4th to sew up his maillot vert and confirm that the tough Queenslander is truly one of the top sprinters in modern cycling.
