91st Tour de France - July 3-25, 2004Main Page Live report Results Split times Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 19 - July 24: Besancon - Besancon ITT, 55 kmArmstrong takes fifth stage winKlöden moves past Basso for second on GCBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Besançon Today in Besançon, Lance Armstrong took his fifth stage win in this year's Tour de France and his 21st career Tour stage win, but today wasn't much about statistics. It was more about the total domination of Armstrong this year as he and his USPS-Berry Floor team have steamrollered the competition. "I'm really happy because it's almost finished. I'm tired in my head, in my legs, in everything." But Armstrong already looking forward to arriving on the Champs Elysées tomorrow to celebrate his record breaking sixth Tour de France win. "That's always a special feeling, not only for me but for the whole team, the whole peloton, for cycling and for the world." With his perfect time trial position and explosive power on the testing Besançon course today, Armstrong explained how he and his USPS-Berry Floor team left nothing to chance when preparing for the 2004 Tour de France. "My team worked a lot last winter...we made a project last winter, in the wind tunnel, with all the suppliers like Trek, Shimano, Nike, Giro Helmets, all together like a Formula One team to get the fastest material...there were a lot of gurus of position...for the hand position, the handlebars. But it's not only my position, it's my (form) this year. But everything was a group effort, of the team...it wasn't only me." Today's runner-up Jan Ullrich was never close to Armstrong today; he lost 0'43 of his total deficit of 1'01 in the first 18km and just managed to hang on the rest of the way. Ullrich could have ridden on the podium with a super time trial today, but Jan has never been super during the entire Tour. "I'm happy for Klöden", explained Ullrich matter-of-factly after Stage 19. "(T-Mobile) was aiming to put someone on the podium and it was really good to see the progress he has made. Ullrich fell just 2'11 short of knocking Ivan Basso off the podium altogether today, but the Italian managed to hold off Ullrich with an excellent effort against the watch in the 55km Besançon test. "I'm a little disappointed that second place got away from me", said Basso. "I knew Klöden might catch me since there was only one minute between us, and even Ullrich if he was super, but he was just normal today." But Basso found solace in his TT today as the 26 year old from Varese, Italy finished 6th, 2'50 behind Armstrong. "Today I rode the time trial of my life, so that's good." After another positive Tour experience for Basso, where he once again made major progress and will finish on the podium in Paris, the classy CSC rider said "Lance won everything in this Tour, but I'm happy that I won a stage and held my own with Lance in the first two weeks. Now I have just one thing in mind: to win the Tour de France someday." With a superb time trial today, T-Mobile's Andreas Klöden moved past Basso into the second slot on the podium today. Klödi is a 29 year old former East German who had a breakthrough season four years ago with a win in Paris-Nice, but has been often injured since. Recent winner of the German championships, Klöden came into his own at this year's Tour. Third today, 0'26 behind Ullrich and 1'27 behind Armstrong, Klöden explained, "Today it was hard to catch Basso; he fought very hard and it wasn't until the end that I heard I was ahead from the time splits, so I gave it full gas." Tomorrow will be the biggest day of the German's career and the full scope hasn't yet hit him. "If I don't crash tomorrow on the way to Paris, then I'll understand that I am second in the Tour. This is sensational! I can't really believe it and I'm sure it will take a few days to sink in." USPS showed again just how strong they are today with six riders in the top 16 (1-Armstrong 4-Landis 9-Rubiera 10-Azevedo 11-Hincapie 16-Ekimov). Besides Armstrong's win, Floyd Landis had a superb ride today after working hard for Lance throughout the Tour, still Landis had the legs to come in 4th in the Besançon time test, ahead of riders like Julich, Basso, Voigt and Leipheimer. As usual, Landis had a sense of humour after his race today. "Yeah, it's the fastest time for a few minutes," joked Floyd post-stage. "It was muggy and hot today but I had my wife Amber in the car today so that was extra motivation for me." When a reporter asked Landis what advice he was going to give Armstrong, his reply told it all. "Ha! Lance doesn't need any help. What course doesn't suit him? He's won every kind of stage in the last five days...I think he's all right." Floyd told Cyclingnews that "I started pretty hard, maybe too hard. After the second climb, there was kind of a rolling section; I thought it was going to go downhill afterwards so I went hard on the climb so I suffered in there. Luckily the last part was downhill so there wasn't a whole lot of time to lose there, so I'm happy the way things went today." Bobby Julich had a surprisingly fast time today in Besançon, considering that the CSC rider has a very sore wrist from a crash in the Pyrenees. "Today was a really hard time trial; you've gotta start hard and then there's a little bit of tailwind in the first half. You just could not push too big of a gear. My legs were just blowing up and I was trying to spin and it felt like I was just pushing through quicksand. At the end, the last eight kilometres is really fast so you had to get it done by then." Julich wasn't selected by T-Mobile for the Tour last year and the American was thankful for his inclusion by Team CSC this year, despite his tougher than expected road to Paris. "I'm really glad to be at the Tour...it beats the heck out of watching it on TV", joked Julich. "You know what, there's nothing like being here. I should have been out of the Tour two or three times because of my injuries, but my team kept pulling me back. Bjarne is the perfect leader for me, Team CSC is just a dream and I hope we continue our relationship." For some riders, today was an important test as the Olympic Games TT is just one month away, so for top testers like Belgian Mark Wauters (Rabobank), Stage 19 required a full-gas effort today despite the tiredness from three weeks of all-out racing at the Tour. Powerhouse Wauters, nickname 'Soldat' for his erect posture, came in with the best fast time early on of 1h11'55. Finishing just behind him Wauters was 23 year old prologue winner Fabian Cancellara (Fassa Bortolo), who is also looking forward to Athens but the variable weather conditions had both riders racing in torrential downpours and sun along the 55km parcours. Cancellara had a solid ride, but fell just sort of Wauters in 1h12'55. A half hour after Wauters set the top time, reigning Olympic TT champ Slava Ekimov (USPS-Berry Floor) came with 1h11'43, the first average speed over 46 km/h. Out on the course, American Christian Vandevelde (Liberty Seguros) was having a good day, ending up in 24th today while the weather conditions improved as the afternoon wore on. It was a warm, humid day with watery sunshine finally coming through to shine on the Tour contre le montre coureurs. Spanish TT champ Jose Ivan Gutierrez was having a great ride, going through all the time checks ahead of Eki, but soon after Gutierrez had posted the new fast time, Bobby Julich chugged home. and was surprised at his fast time. Although Julich was now at the top of the leader board, another American knocked him off a half-hour later. USPS-Berry Floor's Floyd Landis was having a superb day today. Faster than Julich at all the intermediate time splits, he ended up 0'23 faster than the CSC rider. Jan Ullrich then powered in with a new fast time, passing Landis by 1'24, as next, Uli's T-Mobile teammate Klöden, wearing his elegant white German champion jersey also had a superb ride to lose only 0'26 to Ullrich and in doing so, he took back the 1'02 deficit he had on Basso and then some, finishing in 1h08'16 and passing the Italian by 0'21 to jump to the second spot on the Tour de France podium. Basso rode a respectable 1h09'39 but his time trialing skills were still not good enough to stave off the assault of Klöden. As the Italian finished, then Armstrong blasted in just behind Basso, completing in the hilly stage at the incredible average speed of 49.39km/h for his fifth stage win in this year's Tour. Levi Leipheimer and Carlos Sastre were battling for 8th place on GC, but today the American couldn't get the best of the CSC Spaniard. Although Leipheimer bear Sastre by 1'00, it wasn't enough to move past into 8th. Earlier in the day, former maillot jaune Thomas Voeckler found flat legs in the defense of his maillot blanc of best young rider, with Illes Balears Russian phenom Karpets moving into the lead in the category. Stage 20 - July 24: Montereau-Paris, 163kmMostly a formality, Stage 20 is an all-flat stage that has one final Cat. 4 KOM and a sprint halfway in Livry Gargan before entering Paris for the most famous criterium in the world, eight laps of the Champs-Elysees where maillot vert Robbie McEwen hopes to hold off the rest of the thundering herd for the biggest win of his career, but massive Viking Thor Hushovd could spoil the Queenslander's plans along the way.
