Tour of Britain - 2.3Great Britain, September 1-5, 2004Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - September 3: Bakewell - Nottingham, 192kmBoonen wins in NottinghamBy Shane Stokes in Nottingham Quick.Step-Davitamon rider Tom Boonen showed the sprinting form which won him two stages of the Tour de France when he triumphed on stage three of the Tour of Britain today. The 23 year old Belgian thundered across the line in Nottingham this afternoon ahead of Paride Grillo (Ceramiche Panaria), Julian Dean (Credit Agricole) and British duo Roger Hammond and Jeremy Hunt (both MrBookmaker.com). A total of eighteen riders finished in the same time, with most of the rest of field five seconds back due to a gap which opened in the bunch inside the final kilometre. "It was tough, I was boxed in with 250 metres to go so it was hard to get to the front but I made it," said Boonen. "I've enjoyed England, it is a nice country. The racing itself has been very good but hard to control with a team of just six riders. While it hasn't been easy we have already had two stage wins and a second place on Thursday so we can't complain. "I didn't expect it to be like this but there are a lot of people along the roads and at the finish lines. It makes it nice to race here." Race leader Mauricio Ardila (Chocolade Jacques) finished in this second group and while he retains the yellow jersey, Frenchman Eric Leblacher (Credit Agricole) moves up to the same time overall. Nick Nuyens (Quick.Step-Davitamon) and Paolo Savoldelli (T-Mobile) are next in the general classification with Hammond best of the home riders in eleventh place. Today's mainly flat 192.1 kilometre stage was marked by a long distance breakaway which started when four riders - Benjamin Noval (US Postal Service), Philip Deignan (Grant Thornton Team Ireland), Andrei Kashechkin (Credit Agricole) and Victor Rapinski (Navigators Insurance) - went clear at the 14 kilometre mark. Kashechkin experienced mechanical problems in Ashbourne, 27 kilometres into the stage, and sat up from the group which was holding a 1 minute and 12 second lead over the main bunch. Although this reduced the break to three riders, the leaders continued to build their advantage and by the 70 kilometre point they were 13 minutes clear. Starting the day, Deignan was best placed overall in twentieth place, ten seconds off the race lead of Mauricio Ardila and, with Noval back in 64th overall and Rapinski 85th, the young Irish amateur was clear leader on the road. However his prominent position in the general classification meant that the two other riders put pressure on him to sit up out of the break in order to further their chances. After taking second place in the first bonus sprint, the frustrated Irishman did so and went back to the bunch. Deignan explained, "Once we were clear the two others asked me what I was doing in the break, saying that my presence there would lead the bunch to chase. They told me they wanted me to go back to the bunch; I said I would do so after the bonus sprint. It was pretty frustrating, but I have moved up a little and hopefully I can get into the top ten before the race ends on Sunday." With Deignan gone the two leaders pressed onwards but as the stage progressed, the main field began to close the gap right down. Noval attacked on the final KOM of Upper Broughton with some 18 kilometres left to cover, quickly distancing Rapinski. However he was hauled back inside the final five kilometres, with Boonen racing through to take the stage victory in the ensuing bunch sprint. How it unfoldedMuch as was the case yesterday, the opening few kilometres saw repeated attacks from the riders. After four kilometres, a group of fifteen went clear but the combined efforts of the Panaria and Wales team hauled it back. On the first climb of the day at Wirksworth, King of the Mountains leader Ben Day (MrBookmaker.com) created a split in the bunch of about 20 riders when he drove the pace towards the summit. Day was passed by South African champion Ryan Cox before the prime line but finished second to add three more points to his total. Yellow jersey Ardila was keeping close tabs on the riders and ended up taking third at the top. Following a regrouping in the main field, Noval of USPS attacked after approximately 14 kilometres. He was quickly joined by Deignan, Kashechkin and Rapinski and the four riders built a solid lead. After Kashechkin's mechanical in Ashbourne cost him his place in the group, the other three riders persisted and succeeded in opening a bigger lead. However their co-operation did not last terribly long; Deignan was in 20th place overall, ten seconds off yellow. while the other two riders were over thirteen minutes down, and so they told him they wanted him to return to the bunch. After Noval took the special prime of 700 euros at Duffield and Rapinski beat Deignan at Derby, the young Irish rider sat up and went back to the bunch. He was clearly frustrated at this state of play, but had the small consolation of taking two seconds in the bonus sprint, which would move him from 20th to 15th overall at the end of the day. Noval and Rapinski pressed on, the Spaniard taking first at the prime at Loughborough (120.9 kilometres) and then the Belarussian doing likewise at Leicester (139.6 kilometres). By that stage their lead was 6 minutes and 16 seconds and this continued to fall as the chase increased behind. Noval led Rapinski over the category three climb at Ab Kettleby, where their advantage was just 2 minutes and 7 seconds. The US Postal rider then made a solo bid for the stage win when he attacked on the final climb of Upper Broughton, opening up a fifteen second advantage by the top and racing on towards Nottingham. His efforts came to naught, however, with the bunch swooping with two kilometres remaining and arriving en masse to the line, where Boonen thundered in ahead of Grillo, Dean, Hammond and Hunt. Leblacher crossed the line in eighteenth place but with a small advantage over the next riders; this was enough to negate his five second deficit to race leader Mauricio Ardila and move him up to equal time overall. Dean's third place on the stage saw him overhaul Alejandro Alberto Borrajo in the points classification, while Ben Day (MrBookmaker.com) continues as mountains leader. South African champion Ryan Cox (Barloworld) finished one place ahead of him on each of the day's three climbs and so has moved to within nine points of his rival. However just twelve points are up for grabs on tomorrow's penultimate stage, making it likely that Day will hold out. The Tour of Britain continues with a 160.9 kilometre stage from the Newport Velodrome to Celtic Manor, an undulating three lap circuit which is expected to splinter the main field. With just Sunday's criterium in London to follow, the big guns will do what they can to overhaul Ardila tomorrow, ensuring that his Chocolade Jacques team have a very tough day in the saddle. Thirty riders are within 44 seconds of the Colombian, amongst them British champion Roger Hammond who took the 2003 and 2004 titles on a course based around this same circuit. He is just fifteen seconds down and will be highly motivated heading into tomorrow's race.
