Tour of Britain - 2.3Great Britain, September 1-5, 2004Main Page Results Stage Details Next Stage Stage 1 - September 1: Manchester - Manchester, 207kmZanini on topBy Shane Stokes in Manchester Quick.Step-Davitamon rider Stefano Zanini won today's opening stage of the Tour of Britain, taking the victory in Manchester in a bunch sprint of 78 riders. The 35 year old Italian hit the line ahead of Kevin Van Impe (Lotto-Domo), Alejandro Alberto Borrajo (Ceramiche Panaria) and Julian Dean (Credit Agricole), with double Tour de France stage winner Tom Boonen (Quick.Step Davitamon) finishing fifth and British champion Roger Hammond (Mr Bookmaker.com) sixth and best of the home contingent. Confusion reigned inside the last kilometre when, with 500 metres to go, several riders misinterpreted the marshals' directions and almost went the wrong way. They corrected their course but some of their momentum was lost. Boonen was one of those affected but, having felt strong inside the closing kilometres, he should figure again this week. The day's action centred around a long breakaway of three riders, Duncan Urquhart (Scotland), Rodney Green (Barloworld) and Robert Partridge (Wales). These went clear from the drop of the flag and built a considerable lead, with the three becoming two after Partridge was dropped from the break on the crowd-thronged, first category climb of Nick of Pendle. Green and Urquhart pressed on and built a maximum lead of eighteen minutes before the bunch began to react. Urquhart then lost his place at the front on the final climb of Belmont, 34 kilometres from the finish, with Green finally being reeled in by the bunch twelve kilometres later. A flurry of attacks followed including short-lived efforts by GB's Tom Southam plus another by Irishman Ciarán Power (Navigators Insurance) and Barloworld's Stefan Adamsson. Zanini was one of several riders who then got a small gap on the main field towards the end of the undulating 128.72 mile stage. While these were reeled in just before the line in Manchester, his prominent place at the front of the bunch paid off in terms of positioning for the final sprint. The Italian veteran duly took the stage and the first yellow jersey of the race. Despite his worries about transferring from short track events to tough road races, triple Olympic medallist Bradley Wiggins (Crédit Agricole) finished in the main bunch today. He and the rest of the field were cheered along by large crowds, showing that the British public are supporting the race, although one big worry was the heavy traffic which was encountered in several locations along the way. The riders got through without incident, but several voiced their concerns after the stage, saying that the rolling road closures employed are not sufficient in such built-up areas and in such a big event. How it unfoldedNinety-four riders lined out at the race start today at the Manchester Velodrome, with good crowds and blue skies enlivening the mood. The race was neutralised to the outskirts where, after the drop of the flag, Duncan Urquhart (Scotland), Rodney Green (Barloworld) and Robert Partridge (Wales) scurried clear. After just five miles they were two minutes and 40 seconds clear of a lethargic main field and their lead continued to grow as they raced towards the first big climb of the day, Ramsbottom Rake. The climb was not particularly long but certainly was steep, sending the riders into their smallest gear as they toiled up the crowd-lined slopes. Despite the encouragement of the enthusiastic spectators, Partridge lost contact on the climb but was able to close back up after the top. Urquhart, on the other hand, was using both brawn and brains to scale the category one ascent, handing in both his water bottles to the Mavic neutralised vehicle at the start of the climb and then retrieving them at the top. The weight saving of two pounds may be negligible on many ascents but surely counted for something - even if it was just psychological - on the leg-busting slopes. Reunited after Urquhart took the prime, the three leaders sped onwards and continued to build their advantage. Partridge was in trouble once again on the Nick of Pendle climb (45.5 kilometres) this time losing contact for good. Cheered on by the fans, who had turned out in impressive numbers, Urquhart took the maximum points once again at the top and then resumed his co-operation with his breakaway companion to extend their lead to a staggering eighteen minutes by the time they got to the bonus sprint in Inskip. Green was first across the line here, a position he would repeat in the next two sprints at Blackpool (119 kilometres) and Preston (149.2 km). However the biggest story at this point was not the tussles between Green and Urquhart, nor even the chase behind, but the major traffic problems that saw the race cars between break and bunch caught up in civilian traffic and threatened the safety of the riders themselves. With marshals working frantically to get on terms with the problem, serious incident was avoided but the chase certainly lost some of its momentum. However with Urquhart tiring and declining to assist Green in the pace-setting, it was clear that the leading duo's chances - and advantage - was dwindling rapidly. At Riley Green (160 km) the gap was down to five and a half minutes. Just before the start of the final climb of Belmont a further three minutes had been trimmed off their lead. Urquhart then lost contact, leaving Green alone in front. Despite his biggest efforts, he was reeled in with 22 kilometres remaining. A flurry of attacks followed such as those by GB's Tom Southam and the pairing of Ciarán Power (Navigators Insurance) and Barloworld's Stefan Adamsson, but nothing would really stick. Perhaps the most dangerous effort came inside the final few kilometres when Zanini got clear as part of a small group. While the break was reeled in before the line, the Italian's consequent good position helped him avoid the confusion inside the final kilometre and burst out of the bunch to land an excellent stage win. Tom Boonen was tipped to be the fastest sprinter in the race on the back of what has been an excellent year for the young Belgian. After finishing fifth on the stage, he explained what went wrong for him. "I didn't even get onto Zanini's wheel. Stefano went with the breakaway the last three kilometres. We caught them at 7-800 metres to go, and then there was big chaos with the deviation. Some guys went right, some guys went left. A guy jumped in front of my bike, I touched him with my shoulder, I came on the left again. Stefano, meanwhile, was sitting in third wheel and managed to finish off the sprint well." Boonen was one of several riders who voiced their concern with the traffic on the race route. "There were a lot of problems. It wasn't very suitable to race today. Five or six times the situation was very dangerous, and could have been a lot worse - I think we were very lucky today. The organisers have to change something for sure because otherwise there are going to be some big crashes in the next few days. In other countries it's possible to run races safely, so why not here? If it is like this in the next few days, I don't know what's going to happen..." Event director Tony Doyle explained what had gone wrong. "When a break gets a gap of 18 minutes, that puts any race under pressure, whether that's here, France, Belgium, wherever. All the commissaires, all the marshals, all the police are under a huge amount of strain," he said. "There are other factors which contributed too - a lot of people are still on holiday and a lot of schools have still not gone back. With today's great weather everyone was itching to come out and see the Tour of Britain. "I think the fact that this is the first Tour of Britain in five years means that some of the marshals and some of the police who have worked on the event before are going to be a little bit rusty. And for some of the new police, it will be the first major event they've worked on in cycling. So that all added to the pressures." Having explained the factors that led to the problem, Doyle was quick to promise that the situation would improve. "We were aware of what happened out there, so rest assured that we're going have meetings with the police and the officials, and do everything in our power to improve the situation. "No one is more concerned or more aware that the riders' safety is of paramount importance than myself. I'm wearing the hat of the riders, not that of an organiser - I've got the riders' interests at heart." The 2004 Tour of Britain continues tomorrow with a 172.3 kilometre stage from Leeds to Sheffield. Stefano Zanini will set out aiming to hold onto the race leader's yellow jersey but with the gruelling first category climbs of Holme Moss and Snake Pass coming towards the end of the race, the fast-finishing veteran may have a tough task ahead.
