Matt Goold's Sun Tour diary

Although it's one of the two biggest stage races his home country hosts, Australian Matthew Goold is riding the Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria as part of the multi-national Active for Life Team, alongside Canadians Eric Wohlberg and Dominique Perras, New Zealander Glen Mitchell and Jorge Libonatti from Uruguay.

Hailing from the Southern Australian state of Victoria, Goold is a former state road champion whose role in the team will be to ride support for Wohlberg in the hunt for stage victories.

Stage 12 - October 23: Warragul - Mt Baw Baw, 87.7 km

If the jacket fits...

I didn't feel well today, and was not looking forward to climbing a small hill, let alone Mt Baw Baw - and it showed. I was struggling at the first Cat 2 climb (42kms), but with some assistance from Jorge Libonatti, I was soon back with the main group.

Warm-up jackets were needed today, so Glen Mitchell decided to see if Eric Wohlberg's Canadian team jacket fitted. It suited him, so we decided as he was only 1'51 down on the leader, confusing him with someone who was 6'29 down might work! Unfortunately, the sun came out not long after we set off, so the jackets were discarded.

Glen rode really well today and may have moved up to fourth position overall, but we weren't successful in overtaking Bicycle Superstore for team honors.

Phil Thuaux (Jayco) rode a fantastic race today, staying away virtually the entire race, so he should keep the King of the Mountains jersey, but it was Matthew Lloyd (Mitchell Building Supplies) who stole the show. This one can't play football, but he can climb.

Looking forward to the Active For Life Family Fun Day tomorrow. It should be a great day for the family, and I am sure the Traralgon crowd will get behind the event.
