Matt Goold's Sun Tour diary

Although it's one of the two biggest stage races his home country hosts, Australian Matthew Goold is riding the Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria as part of the multi-national Active for Life Team, alongside Canadians Eric Wohlberg and Dominique Perras, New Zealander Glen Mitchell and Jorge Libonatti from Uruguay.

Hailing from the Southern Australian state of Victoria, Goold is a former state road champion whose role in the team will be to ride support for Wohlberg in the hunt for stage victories.

Stage 6 - October 18: Colac, 178.7 km

Is Dom, is good

Today everything went according to the Active For Life team plan and I personally was feeling much better.

There were many attempted breaks in the first 20kms, until Dominique Perras managed to steal a gap with around four other riders. According to Dom, they were riding really hard trying to put some time into the bunch when, to his amazement, they were joined by Simon Gerrans and Luke Roberts, two of the overall favorites for the race.

This move totally changed the dynamic of the race, and caught a lot of the other teams off guard. Obviously, we were not going to chase, as this would jeopardise Dom's chance of a stage victory - so it was left up to Baden Cooke's Subaru team and the McGee - NSW Institute of Sport team to bring the groups back together.

Though they did manage to reduce the gap, the leading four could not be caught, and Dominique was first across the line, which was a fantastic effort as he has been ill for a week, and off the bike for four.

It is great to see Active For Life on the podium, and we will celebrate tonight with a large bowl of pasta and an early night - after all, we have to ride another 155kms tomorrow
