Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria - 2.3Australia, October 14-24, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 7 - October 19: Creswick - Daylesford, 154.8 kmLjungblad grabs stage as favourites falterCooke out with back troublePre-race favourite Baden Cooke is out of the Malaysian Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria after straining back muscles today (Tuesday, October 19) and returned to Melbourne immediately after the Stage 7 finish into Daylesford. Cooke, riding for the Subaru team, felt back spasms about half way through the 154.8 km stage from Creswick and Daylesford and with teammate Mark Renshaw straining leg muscles, the pair withdrew before the tour entourage hit the finish line. In a dramatic sixth day of the 53rd Herald Sun Tour, seven riders felt the pressure of the race and were forced to withdraw, taking the total to 12 non-finishers. Joining Cooke and Renshaw in the sag wagon Irishman Brian Kenneally (Sungold Milk - Warrnambool), Victorian David Pell (Uno Clothing), ace Queenslander Henk Vogels (Bicycle Superstore), German Thomas Liese (Malaysia Airlines) and New South Welshman Keiran Cameron (McGee - NSW Institute of Sport). The withdrawals of seven riders overshadowed somewhat the performance of Sweden's Jonas Ljungblad (Europcar - Pelaco), who won the stage impressively and jumped from 8th to 3rd and is now just 46 seconds behind tour leader, Karl Menzies of Tasmania, who is riding for the Bicycle Superstore team. Ljungblad (pronounced Young Blood) won his second HST stage, following his initial victory in the Bacchus Marsh to Buninyong stage back in 2002. "I want to be close as possible to the GC leaders as possible by the time we get to Mt Baw Baw on Saturday, so this win and the time bonus that comes with it does my chances no harm at all," Ljungblad said. "We have had two very tough days on the road, there have been a lot of attacks and counter attacks, I'm sure everyone has tired and sore legs," Ljungblad said. "I am glad to have got through these two days in reasonable shape as far as the GC is concerned." Ljungblad was involved in an 18 man breakaway, which formed not long after the tour field left Creswick, although that group soon strengthened to 20 when Luke Roberts (La Trobe City) and Matthew Goold (Active For Life) bridged the gap. Whilst it was important for the riders in the break to make the most of their opportunities for time bonuses, it was just as crucial for the ones who missed the split not to lose too much time. For early tour leader Dean Downing (Bendigo) and Simon Gerrans (Jayco), the day was a disaster. Downing, a member of the Great Britain track team, held the yellow jersey into the Geelong Criterium and Colac Tour of Otways (stages 5 & 6), fell from grace in a big way. He started the day in third place and 36 seconds behind Menzies - he finished it in 43rd position and 32.27 minutes adrift and with no chance of winning the bike race. While Downing suffered a day to forget, two his GB track teammates Kristian House and Keiran Page enjoyed the day in the saddle. House moved from 19th to 9th and Page from 17th to 10th. Gerrans was considered a big chance for GC honours, but by missing the important breaks, limped home more than 3 minutes behind the leading group and is now in 18th position and 4.39 minutes behind Menzies. The Bicycle Superstore team hold one and two in GC and they are now talking seriously about carrying yellow all the way to Traralgon this Sunday. Menzies' lead over his teammate David McKenzie has been narrowed from 25 seconds to 9, but the pair are riding as a team, not as the two protragonists at the head of the tour. "As a team, we have still not spoken about which one of us should or is supposed to win," Menzies said. "Today we were lucky enough to have three riders in the lead group, so we could all work together and watch what the other teams were up to." Menzies and McKenzie had the support of New Zealand teammate Scott Guyton out in front and with Guyton's reputation as a noted hill climber, the Bicycle Superstore team were able to have some control over the day's proceedings. Whilst Ljungblad was a comfortable winner by 17 seconds, the sprint for the minor placings was a mini-series in itself. Ben Brooks (McGee - NSW Institute of Sport) outgunned New Zealander Glenn Mitchell (Active For Life) in a hectic sprint to the line. Brooks jumped from 9th to 5th on GC, whilst Mitchell, who was celebrating his 32nd birthday, improved his rating from 16th to 7th and at 2.07 minutes behind Menzies is still an outside chance for overall honours. South Australia's gold medal Olympian Luke Roberts, riding for La Trobe City did his chances no harm either, finishing 7th in the stage and narrowing the gap to Melnzies to 50 seconds, which kept him in fourth position. The tour continues on Wednesday with a 69 kermesse around Lake Weeroona in Bendigo and will climax in Traralgon this Sunday, but not before the riders tackle the extremely tough Mt Baw Baw.
