Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria - 2.3Australia, October 14-24, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 13 - October 24: Traralgon Kermesse, 57 kmThe end of an era for the Sun TourWalker takes final stage; Ljungblad the overallBy Rod Morris in Traralgon The curtain closed on a golden era for Australian cycling today with the final Malaysian Airlines Herald Sun Tour of Provincial Victoria under the directorship of sports promoter John Craven, but immediately re-opened with the birth of some new talent on the horizon. 19 year-old Victorian William Walker continued his amazing season by claiming yet another major victory, taking the final stage of the HST, a 57 kermesse in Traralgon. The overall honours went to tough Swedish rider Jonas Ljungblad. Craven has enjoyed a 25 year association with the Herald Sun Tour, nine as a sports journalist and the last 16 as race director, but it is rumoured that Major Events Victoria will assume the mantle in 2005. Craven will stay involved with sports promotion next year and has already announced exciting plans with the Tour of Sunraysia, Tour of Gippsland, Tour of Tasmania, Tour of Queensland and the time-honoured Melbourne to Warrnambool. Once again, it was Will Walker who upstaged his much older rivals in Traralgon. Walker and eight other riders were involved in a fast-moving break that put time into the peloton at around seven laps into the 20 lap race. Tasmanian Karl Menzies was the only rider in the top 10 on General Classification involved in the breakaway, but at more than four minutes down on Ljungblad, there was no urgency in the chasing pack. Menzies and Walker were the two riders who found something extra in the run to the line, with the lighter weight Victorian getting over the line by a wheel's length. Walker is a member of the powerful Jayco Victorian team and has made plenty of riders sit up and take notice of him this season. In January, he won a stage of the Bay Crit series and as the year progressed won overall honours in the Tattersall's Cup, won the Tour of Sunraysia and the Melbourne to Warrnambool. Just for good measure, Walker has now won a stage of Australia's oldest continuous - and arguably one of the best - road races. "It was hard out there, bloody hard, the racing was at an extremely fast tempo and you had to be on your toes or you got left behind," Walker said. "I got mucked around with two laps to go and got caught in a split bunch, so Chris Sutton and I had to chase them down, using a bit more petrol than planned. Our team have had a few hiccups this week, but we finished okay with one in the top 10, so no real complaints." Walker ranked this win alongside his victory in the Melbourne to Warrnambool earlier this month. The 25-year-old Ljungblad has developed a love affair with Australia, having won the Bacchus Marsh to Buninyong stage in 2002, the Sprint Championship in last year's inaugural Tour of Queensland and two stages as well as overall honours in this week's HST. From Gothenburg, Sweden, Ljungblad spent today's stage watching the tail of his nearest challenger David McKenzie. Ljungblad started the day 1'33 ahead of McKenzie and with a relatively short course (57 km) it was unlikely the popular Victorian riding for the Bicycling Superstore team would catch the Swede. McKenzie made an early assault by winning the first intermediate sprint, which gained him 3 seconds, but for "Macca" that was it. He missed the nine man break and spent the rest of the afternoon trying to skip away from Ljungblad, but without success. Claiming third place on GC was New South Welshman Ben Brooks, riding for the McGee-NSWIS team, finishing 1'51 behind Ljungblad and 21 seconds behind McKenzie. Karl Menzies, who carried the leader's jersey for more kilometres than any other rider this week, improved his ranking after finishing second to Walker in the stage. Menzies jumped from ninth to fifth, won the Sprint Championship, was presented with the final day's Most Aggressive rider award and was a member of the winning Bicycle Superstore team...not a bad effort for a rider who was given just 48 hours notice that he had a start in the HST. Jayco rider Phillip Thuaux (NSW) stitched up the King of the Mountain Championship on Saturday when he rode a superb race from Warragul to Mt Baw Baw, while other awards presented at the end of the tour included the Leading Australian to David McKenzie and Leading Under 23 to Matthew Lloyd (winner of the Mt Baw Baw stage). The majority of riders in the HST will enjoy a week off before heading north to compete in the 2nd annual Tour of Queensland which will start in Maryborough on November 1 and finish 490 km and six days later in Bundaberg.
