89th Milano-Torino - 1.1Italy, October 13, 20042003 Results Results Past winners Serrano surpriseSpanish rider Marcos Serrano (Liberty Seguros) has won the 89th Milano-Torino in an improbable manner. Although he made the leading break of four on the crucial climb of the Superga, he was forced to chase after crashing on the descent, and, together with Cadel Evans (T-Mobile), only caught the two leaders Francesco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola) and Eddy Mazzoleni (Saeco) with 500m to go. He wasted no time and surprised them in the sprint, winning comfortably ahead of Mazzoleni, Casagrande and Evans. How it unfolded154 riders left Novate Milanese shortly before midday, and constant attacks got the race off to a very fast start. After 20 km, seven riders escaped: Sella, Mariangeli, Velo, Baranowski, Van Bon, Mutsaars and Gussev, reaching a lead of 25 seconds before they were caught at km 25. Many other riders tried to get away in a very fast first hour (50.6 km/h), but it wasn't until the 50 km point that Emanuele Sella (Panaria) and Denis Bondarenko (Rus) were able to break clear for a little while longer. But eight kilometres later, on the climb of Mortara, the pair were joined by 30 more riders, followed by the rest of the peloton at km 64. After 70 km, Andrea Tafi (Alessio-Bianchi) attacked, and was chased by Michele Gobbi (De Nardi) and Sylvester Szmyd (Saeco), but the two were unable to catch the flying Tuscan and were caught by the peloton. Finally the pace eased up and Tafi quickly established a decent sized lead of 3'40 by km 78. The peloton didn't want to give him too much of an advantage, however, and had reduced the gap to 3'00 at the halfway point (km 100) with the average speed still a very fast 48.1 km/h after two hours of racing. At the feed zone (km 105), many riders abandoned, including Perez Cuapio, Scarponi, Baldato, Furlan, Van Bon and Marichal. In front Tafi, slowed but was still 3'11 ahead of the peloton with 50 km to go, with the average speed now 45.9 km/h after three hours. The counter-attacks started within the peloton and the pace picked up for the finale. Tafi was caught with 30 km to go and the real race began to determine the winner. On the Colle di Superga, Duma (Landbouwkrediet), Fertonani (Phonak) and Schreck (T-Mobile) attacked, but the latter quickly lost contact and was replaced by José Luis Arrieta (Illes Balears). The peloton split up in pursuit with Francesco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola) doing most of the damage, catching and passing the three leaders. He was joined by Cadel Evans (T-Mobile), Eddy Mazzoleni (Saeco) and Marcos Serrano (Liberty) with a group of 20 riders forming behind, including Cunego. At the top of the climb, the four leaders had 22 seconds on the chase group, and although Evans tried to attack on the descent, he was caught and the leaders regrouped save for Serrano, who had crashed on the descent. With six kilometres to go, Serrano rejoined the front group but he and Evans were dropped at the same time by Casagrande and Mazzoleni. With 2 km left, the two leaders had 6 seconds on Evans, with Serrano a little way back and the chase group at 48 seconds. But Evans and Serrano didn't give up and caught the leaders with 500m to go as they were foxing in the sprint. Serrano attacked immediately and with a huge effort, managed to hold off Mazzoleni and Casagrande for the victory. PhotographyImages by Fotoreporter Sirotti
