Australian track ace Ashley Hutchinson claimed opening day honours in the 2nd annual Jayco Tour of Queensland cycling classic in Maryborough with a hard fought victory in a lightning fast criterium stage. Overlooked for the Australian track team which won the 4000m pursuit gold medal at the Athens Olympics this year, Hutchinson (25) led home a fast finishing pack to win the 27 km race. In sizzling heat, Hutchinson was clocked at 34.57 minutes for the journey, equating to an average speed of 46.35 km per hour!

Hutchinson, riding for the Mirvac team got over the shoulder of pre-race favourite David McKenzie (Jayco) and Englishman Dean Downing (Radio 4BU - KIX FM) in an exciting finish. But while Hutchinson proudly claimed the opening stage victory, the tour leader's distinctive orange jersey was presented to former New Zealander - now Queenslander, Jaaron Poad (Argon 18 Bikes - Caravello).

Hutchinson gained 20 seconds bonus for winning the stage, but Poad jumped ahead of him, courtesy of finishing fourth in the stage, which carried 14 seconds bonus and then picked up a further 10 seconds bonus in the Yamaha Sprint Championship. Even McKenzie edged in front of Hutchinson, courtesy of some minor placings in the intermediate sprints.

Poad was a late inclusion in the Tour of Queensland after the Argon 18 Bikes - Caravello team decided to replace NSW rider Peter Milostic after a less-than average Herald Sun Tour performance. Based in Brisbane and working for the Velo Bicycles store in the Northern suburbs, Poad had to plead with his boss to get time off to line-up. "I was only asked to ride in this tour last Monday and we have been pretty busy at work and the boss really didn't want to let me go," Poad said. "However my form has been pretty good and I rode in the Tour of Queensland and know how good an event it is.

"The weather is magic, the tour routes are testing and the tour organisation is superb, so its great to be involved. It's even better to be the tour leader after the first stage, however it's not something I or my team planned. I suppose we'll have to ride a bit harder now to defend the leader's top."

Poad will carry a 3 second lead over McKenzie and 4 seconds to Hutchinson into tomorrow's second stage, a 72 km kermesse around the Hervey Bay waterfront.

Poad has only recently returned from a trip back home to his native New Zealand where he contested the NZ National Road Championships. He finished 8th, but a late-race puncture put paid to any chance of victory. "I rode pretty good there, but the puncture didn't help at all," he said.

Whilst Poad sits proudly in the leader's top, Ashley Hutchinson is not perturbed that he missed out, despite winning the stage. "No not all, I think there is a bit too much pressure on the leader early in the tour, I'd prefer to sneak up on them later in the week," he said. "It was a good race to start the tour with, it was fast, there were plenty of tactics and there were plenty of good riders wanting to make a feature race of it."

Hutchinson won a stage of last year's inaugural Tour of Queensland, but said he was pleasantly surprised to have emulated the feat so early in this year's event. "Its always nice to win and particularly the opening stage because it will put everyone in the team in a good mood. A stage win lifts the morale of everyone, not just the riders, but the manager, mechanics and masseur, they are just as much part of the team.

Aggressive

"The race itself was very aggressive, the Jayco boys attacked very early, making sure everyone else followed suit. I was a bit lucky on the last corner into the home straight because I think "Macca" (David McKenzie) took the wrong line, which allowed me to slip under his guard. From there it was a bit of a drag race up the final straight to the line, thankfully I got over him...just."

The Tour of Queensland continues tomorrow in Hervey Bay and is scheduled to finish in Bundaberg next Saturday.
