Liese poised for tour win

The face of the Jayco Tour of Queensland cycling classic took on a whole new look today when German rider Thomas Liese stormed into the overall lead. Liese demonstrated his climbing abilities with a strong third placing in the Gin Gin to Mount Perry stage and then a solid sixth in the afternoon's individual time trial to the top of the Normanby Range Lookout. Liese overcame a 59 second deficit he had at the start of the day, to end proceedings 13 seconds in front of his nearest challenger, Russell Van Hout.
Liese, riding for the Malaysia Airlines team will also be officially declared the Tour of Queensland's King of the Mountain at the end of the final stage, a 33 km criterium in the heart of Bundaberg. South Australian, Van Hout, riding for Subaru will be well suited to the criterium and has an excellent chance of claiming overall honours. However the real danger is Swedish rider Jonas Ljungblad (Bendigo Bank). After winning the recent Herald Sun Tour in Victoria, Ljungblad has continued his amazing form this week, today claiming his second stage win - the individual time trial.

Ljungblad has jumped into third place at just 15 seconds shy of Liese and his criterium capabilities are well noted, perhaps he is on the verge of a second successive major multi-stage tour race. But the German, Liese, despite not being a renowned criterium racer, is determined to give it his best shot.

"Today I was only interested in defending my King of the Mountain jersey, but to move into General Classification lead as well is a bonus and I will now try and defend that one as well," Liese said. "I do not ride criteriums as well as other sort of races, but they have still have to catch me."
Ljungblad is also determined to reel in the German and is expected to figure in the criterium's 11 intermediate sprints. "I have given myself a real chance of winning this race, it would be an injustice if I do not ride very hard in the criterium," he said. "I lost a little more time than I wanted in the morning road stage, but I was quite pleased with the time trial."
With only 33 km remaining, there are six riders placed within 55 seconds of each other and it's expected that that is where the tour winner will come. The Bundaberg Criterium will start at 2 p.m.
