Jayco Tour of Queensland - 2.5Australia, November 1-6, 2004Main Page Results Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - November 3: Bundaberg Criterium, 33 kmPoad back in the lead as Macca wins stageBy Rod Morris in Bundaberg In one of the most intriguing days in the race's history, New Zealander Jaaron Poad maintained his slender lead in the Jayco Tour of Queensland classic in Bundaberg today. Poad (25) started the day in brilliant fashion by winning the Tour of the Canefields in Oakhurst near Maryborough for the Argon 18 Bikes - Caravello team and then scored a top 10 placing in the Bundaberg twilight criterium, to stay 3 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger, Russell Van Hout, a South Australian riding for the Subaru team. But in strange circumstances in the morning stage, Poad actually lost control of the leader's orange jersey to Van Hout, despite winning the bike race! Van Hout had taken enough bonus seconds in the intermediate sprints and climbs to wrest the jersey from Poad's shoulders, albeit briefly. The evening criterium around the streets of Bundaberg then provided the backdrop for a classic tussle. Whilst pre-race favourite David McKenzie (Jayco) won the stage, just ahead of exciting Adelaide youngster Mathew Rex (Lysaght) and top Queenslander Ashley Hutchinson (Mirvac), there was plenty of interest in watching the Poad v Van Hout stoush. At the start of the stage, Van Hout was boasting a slender 1 second lead and with 11 intermediate sprints on offer, there was more excitement predicted. Van Hout managed to claim 5 seconds in bonuses, only to be outdone by Poad, who picked up 7 seconds, meaning the Kiwi was back in front by 1 second and then in the sprint home, Poad edged past Van Hout by one position, giving him another 2-seconds - which left him 3 seconds ahead - exactly where he had started the day at! "It was a very tough day," Poad explained. "The Canefields Tour had a little bit of everything and I was really excited and pleased that I was able to get away from the pack with about 1 km to race and then hold on to win. The criterium stage was brutally fast, there were so many attacks that it was hard to keep an eye on everyone in GC." But keep an eye on Van Hout was exactly what Poad was able to do and he will carry his slim lead into Stage 5, the longest race of this year's tour, from Miriam Vale to Town of 1770. David McKenzie forged back into General Classification honours with a stylish win in the Bundaberg Criterium. As defending champion and pre-tour favourite, there is probably more pressure on McKenzie than any other rider. McKenzie had slipped to 12th prior to Stage 4, but the win catapulted him back into fourth place, although he is still 37 seconds behind Poad. "That was a great battle that Matthew (Rex) and I had, it was a race I really enjoyed, probably more so because I won," McKenzie said. "I knew the power of the bunch was coming, so that last lap was sensationally fast. I've now got myself back into a chance for this tour, although Friday's individual time trial might sort a few out." Matthew Rex, although disappointed not to have won, was diplomatic on the podium. "Macca (McKenzie) got me when I wasn't looking and then I had a real fight with Ash (Hutchinson) to hang on for second place," he said. Belgium veteran Bart Heirewegh (Bundaberg Sugar) in his last race before retirement is another that is now a definite threat on GC standings. Heirewegh is well situated in third place at 33 seconds behind Poad, although the Miriam Vale to Town of 1770 stage might test his aging legs. PhotographyImages by Shane Goss/www.licoricegallery.com
