62nd Paris-Nice - 2.HCFrance, March 7-14, 2004Main Page Stage details Live report Results Previous Stage Stage 8 - March 14: Nice - Nice, 144 kmJaksche has arrived!Vinokourov takes third stage winBy Chris Henry Germany's Jörg Jaksche (Team CSC) has confirmed his promise as a winner of big races with overall victory in the 62nd edition of Paris-Nice. Jaksche won in grand style, earning the first yellow jersey after winning the opening stage time trial and not just defending his lead but riding aggressively to take precious seconds and keep his closest rivals against the ropes at all times. Jaksche beat Italian Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) by 15 seconds with his teammates Bobby Julich and Jens Voigt following in third and fourth. George Hincapie of US Postal Service put in a fine performance of his own to place fifth overall. "I didn't come to Paris-Nice as the designated leader," said an always-modest Jaksche after the final victory was his. "This is an important race, and I think I've moved to a new level." Alexandre Vinokourov (T-Mobile) won his third stage in four days on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, outsprinting breakaway companion Denis Menchov (Illes Balears-Banesto), himself a stage winner two days ago in Gap. Vinokourov was one of several contenders for the overall classification knocked out of the running by the Team CSC juggernaut on stage 2, but the feisty Kazakh rode himself into better condition as the week went on and showed once again his knack for big performances in Paris-Nice. "I found my legs as the week went on," Vinokourov told French television after his stage victory Sunday. "The strongest rider is the one who wins the overall, but still I won three stages and this is a magnificent result." How it unfoldedMost riders are quick to say that their own personal victory is also a victory for the team. This year's Paris-Nice provided an extraordinary example of just how important a strong can be for the success of its leader. Despite losing three members to injury the day before, Jaksche's CSC team appeared as strong on the race's final day as it did when the entire eight man formation blew the race apart in the tough winds of stage 2. Jaksche's compatriot Jens Voigt did the work of three men at the head of the peloton, while Ivan Basso, Frank Schleck and Bobby Julich all kept the race under perfect control for the yellow jersey. Davide Rebellin, Jaksche's closest competitor at 15", found himself powerless against the yellow jersey's guards. Although a play for the overall victory was Rebellin's to make, a single attack told him his hopes were slim to none. "I tried to attack once, but I saw that Jaksche had his whole team with him," Rebellin explained. "I had hoped finish high in the general classification or win a stage. For me this is a good result, and I hope to do well in the classics and the World Cup." Frank Vandenbroucke (Fassa Bortolo) was more aggressive in the closing stages, attacking strongly but still unable to crack Jaksche and CSC. Today Vandenbroucke went on the attack early but faced with third place overall Bobby Julich for company, he knew it was fruitless to persist. By the time CSC had delivered Jaksche to the final climb of the Col d'Eze, the race was effectively won. The key move of the race came on the final trip up the Col de Châteauneuf, as Vinokourov and Thorsten Hiekmann (T-Mobile, Levi Leipheimer (Rabobank), Benoît Poilvet (Crédit Agricole), Alberto Contador (Liberty Seguros), Tyler Hamilton (Phonak), Aitor Osa and Denis Menchov (Illes Balears), Gorka Gonzalez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), and David Moncoutié (Cofidis) put a decisive gap between themselves and the main peloton of the yellow jersey. The leaders worked very well together and were spurred on largely by the Illes Balears and T-Mobile duos. Americans Leipheimer and Hamilton each rode a good race Sunday to making the selection. Leipheimer bridged to the leaders by himself as the split was being made on the Châteauneuf and Hamilton, who spent additional time out front earlier in the stage in a break of five, clawed his way back to the leaders after several accelerations at the front put him in difficulty. King of the mountains Aitor Osa set a furious tempo as the final climb of the Col d'Eze began, setting up teammate Menchov for an eventual showdown with Vinokourov, who himself tried some small attacks but preferred to test the waters before going for gold. Menchov tried a first attack but Leipheimer and Vinokourov were quick to catch his wheel, with Contador coming up behind with Moncoutié digging deep. Once he was caught, Menchov kicked again, and this time only Vinokourov had the answer. As the two opened a small gap, Vinokourov committed himself and counter-attacked with full force, dropping Menchov and the rest. It took some time, but Menchov slowly pulled himself up to Vinokourov with just under a kilometre to the summit of the Col d'Eze. The gap to the others was set, and the pair began the sweeping plunge back to Nice with 15" over Contador and the rest of the break spread out behind. Vinokourov and Menchov traded pulls on the wide, fast descent and steadily opened their advantage to 30 seconds, then 45, and ultimately over a minute as the chasing riders began to resign themselves to a fight for third place. By the time the two leaders reached Nice and the Promenade des Anglais, the deed was done. With more than a minute in hand, Vinokourov ducked behind Menchov as they hit the red kite with 1km to go. Their pace steadily slowed as both prepared for a tricky, tactical two man sprint. Around the final U-turn Vinokourov still sat behind, but as they hit the headwind of the final stretch, the powerful T-Mobile rider moved alongside and ultimately launched the sprint from the front position, powering all the way to the line with a tired and hapless Menchov unable to even move up alongside in the sprint. The rest of the break straggled home as Vinokourov's teammate Hiekmann took an uncontested jump to claim third place. Jaksche punched the air in the main peloton as he slid across the line two minutes later. Jaksche spent seven days in the yellow jersey, but this was the day that mattered.
