62nd Paris-Nice - 2.HCFrance, March 7-14, 2004Main Page Stage details Live report Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - March 12: Rasteau - Gap, 173.5 kmMenchov takes animated stage, Jaksche solidifies leadBy Chris Henry Russian Denis Menchov sprinted to victory in an animated sixth stage of Paris-Nice Friday, beating three breakaway companions in a dash to the line after 173 kilometres and three first category climbs. Today's visit to Gap marked the closest incursion yet for a Paris-Nice parcours into the Alps, something of a risk to the race organisers given the less than hospitable weather conditions thus far, but one that today paid off with exciting racing. Germany's Jörg Jaksche (Team CSC) once again extended his race lead over Davide Rebellin thanks to bonus seconds picked up at the two intermediate sprints. "My first thoughts go to the victims of the attacks [in Madrid]," Menchov said after his victory. "I live in Spain and I was very touched, like all Spaniards, by what happened. Our team worked hard to win today. It wasn't easy but I felt very strong." A dramatic finale on the Col de Manse saw a number of riders put in attack after attack, but ultimately a four man move including Menchov, Dave Bruylandts (Chocolade Jacques), Floyd Landis (US Postal Service) and Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) managed to make the difference. Frank Vandenbroucke (Fassa Bortolo) was the most dangerous rival to the yellow jersey to launch an attack, but Jaksche was able to cover his move, shadowed by second place Rebellin. By the finish the top five was unchanged, although Jaksche had added to his slender lead. Friday dawned another cold day as the riders faced up to a relatively short stage of 173 kilometres, but one which would tackle four climbs, with the final summit coming just 10 kilometres before the finish in Gap. The peloton was pummeled by a brutal headwind in the early part of the race, making conditions difficult before the Cat. 2 Col de Fontaube began. Finally on the climb Aitor Osa (Illes Balears-Banesto), one of several riders on the attack all day Thursday, decided to have another go. He broke clear and was soon joined by young Frenchman Nicolas Portal (Ag2r-Prévoyance), a move the race leaders were content to see go clear. How it unfoldedEven if the stage win were a long way away, Osa had the incentive of riding for the king of the mountains jersey, collecting points on the first two climbs and equalling polka dot jersey Thomas Ziegler (Gerolsteiner) on the road. A long drag between the Col de Macuègne and the Col de la Sentinelle forced Portal and Menchov to work hard while the peloton could bide its time and begin a steady chase. By the time the duo hit the slopes of the Col de la Sentinelle, after more than 100km in the lead, Portal had reached his limit. Osa quickly dropped his partner, and still looking fresh he began to bound up the Sentinelle in search of mountain points. His advantage over the field had tumbled to little more than two minutes, indicating that his stage win hopes were all but gone, but the polka dot jersey could still be his. Osa succeeded in taking maximum points before beginning the plunge into Gap, where the race would pass through the finish line before tackling the final circuit up and around the Col de Manse. Osa was eventually caught on the uneven descent into gap by a small group including Iñigo Landaluze (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Alberto Contador (Liberty Seguros), and his Illes Balears teammate Menchov who latched on to the cover the move. Kim Kirchen of Fassa Bortolo made a strong effort to bridge the gap, bringing CSC's Bobby Julich with him. For CSC it was a perfect move, as Julich could not only act as policeman for Jaksche, but sitting in third place himself he had his own card to play for the general classification. Ultimately this group was caught as the race entered Gap, and Jaksche linked up with Julich to prepare for the day's second bonus sprint. Despite the substantial tempo being set by one of his Gerolsteiner teammates, second place Rebellin was nowhere to be seen as the sprint approached. Without incident, Jaksche jumped clear with Julich on his wheel, adding another three seconds to his lead before the day's final difficulty. Early in the ascension of the Col de Manse, a difficult climb of varying steepness, Phonak's Alexandre Moos attacked and went clear of the peloton. He was joined by Bruylandts, with Landis and Sanchez just behind. Moos was quickly passed and dropped but the trio kept going and opened up a gap on the field, which now was peppered by constant attacks. From the main field, now reduced to some 25 riders, Menchov attacked on his own once again, putting in an enormous effort to bridge to the three leaders. He was ultimately successful, as behind Jaksche and Rebellin marked each other, waiting for the attacks that mattered. A resurgent Alex Zülle (Phonak) made his own effort to break free and join the leaders, slowly but steadily gaining ground as they approached the summit. The gap to the yellow jersey hovered around 20" as Bruylandts, Landis, Menchov and Sanchez persisted, with Zülle coming up behind. Just as he looked set to join the leaders, Frank Vandenbroucke decided his time had come, and in seemingly no time caught and passed Zülle. Vandenbroucke's attack was a hint of things to come as the Belgian clearly seems set to return to his previous best form. It was a brilliant move, but not quite strong enough to shake the tenacious Jaksche, who quickly joined him. Rebellin and others struggled to catch the departing train, but by the summit the principal contenders were still together, and still chasing the lead quartet. Flying at breakneck speeds down the Col de Manse, the same descent on which Joseba Beloki crashed out of the 2003 Tour de France, Frank Vandenbroucke kept the pressure on as he tried to catch the leaders and keep Jaksche under maximum pressure. It wasn't enough, but it was a good sign for upcoming classics season. Into the finish in Gap, Sanchez tried his own escape from the lead group, steadily reeled in by Landis and Bruylandts. It was Bruylandts who caught him and launched the sprint early, perhaps knowing he had little left in his weary legs. Menchov quickly came from behind and distanced Bruylandts, pushed to the line by Sanchez while Landis coasted in for third place after a skipped chain derailed his sprint. It was an explosive day, and with the final weekend of racing beginning Saturday morning, Jaksche can be content with another flawless performance. His time gap to Rebellin is up to 14", which is still a small margin but could be enough to seal the overall victory. "It's not over, even though I think today was the hardest day," Jaksche said, donning another yellow jersey. "I'm worried most about the final day on Sunday. Vandenbroucke is getting stronger and stronger, and I would have preferred also to have taken some more time on Rebellin." Stages 7 and 8 present plenty of climbing, but today offered the shortest distance between the final summit and the stage finish, meaning challengers to Jaksche's jersey will have to attack from farther out in order to take time. Team CSC remains in control, still with three riders in the top five. PhotographyImages by AFP Photo
