68th Tour de Suisse - 2.HCSwitzerland, June 12-20, 2004Main page Results Stage profile Next stage Scott Sunderland's diary Stage 1 - June 12: Sursee - Beromünster, 176kmPowerful Ullrich beats Camenzind in BeromünsterAn impressive ride by Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile) has given him the victory in the first stage of the Tour de Suisse, which finished in Beromünster. Despite looking like a sprinters' stage on paper, the peloton finished in several fragments as Ullrich led home Oscar Camenzind, Fabian Jeker, Steve Zampieri and David Canada in the first group of five. A very nervous Ullrich started his sprint with 250m to go, and although Camenzind had his wheel, the downhill curves to the finish suited the rider in front and Ullrich was able to hold off the Swiss rider. "We had already gone over the roads at the finish twice, so I knew what I had to do," said Ullrich, who took his first win of the season today. "If I was first around the last corner, then I knew I would win. I'm happy of course that I won, but I'm also quite tired, because the stage cost a lot more power than expected." How it unfoldedThe 176 km stage from Sursee to Beromünster was expected to suit the sprinters, as it only contained two Cat. 4 climbs. 144 riders from 18 teams followed out from Sursee at 12:50, but the peloton didn't stay together for long as by the first passage of the finish line after 30 km, a group of 39 riders had detached itself from the main field. The remaining 100 odd riders never saw the leaders again, eventually finishing over 18 minutes down at the end of the stage. Besides Ullrich and Camenzind, the leading group also included last year's TdS winner Alexandre Vinokourov, Giuseppe Guerini, Steffen Wesemann and Santiago Botero (T-Mobile), Alexandre Moos (Phonak), Bobby Julich (CSC), Dario Cioni (Fassa Bortolo), Georg Totschnig (Gerolsteiner), Pavel Tonkov (Vini Caldirola), Axel Merckx (Lotto-Domo) and Tour of Germany winner Patrik Sinkewitz (Quick.Step), among others. After 76 km the group had 4 minutes advantage over the main field, which wasn't particularly interested in chasing as most of the main teams were represented. Alessio-Bianchi was the main team working, as while they had Scott Sunderland in the leading group, their main GC riders hadn't made it across. Chocolade Jacques didn't have any riders in front, and when they began to work with Alessio with 90 km to go, they were able to pull back the leaders somewhat. The Lampre team lent a hand with 65 km to go, and 10 km later the advantage to the leaders was just 2'10, and it looked like the chase would be successful. But the tempo increased in front, and Vinokourov picked up a bonus second in the sprint at Gunzwil (127 km) behind Bodrogi and Camenzind, clearly signaling his intentions to gain time. The field stopped chasing and suddenly the gap ballooned out to 5, then 7, then 18 minutes. The first climb of the day was the Cat. 4 Waldhaus (140.0 km), where David Canada (Saunier Duval) crossed first ahead of Steve Zampieri (Vini Caldirola). The pair had an 18 second lead over the front group at the top, and continued to increase their advantage as they rode a two man time trial. Their gap was 21 seconds when they crossed the finish line for the second time with 25 km to go, and at that moment Jan Ullrich attacked the peloton in pursuit, with Camenzind on his wheel. The pair took 2 km to catch the two leaders, and suddenly there was a very dangerous looking four man break with 45 seconds on the field. The chase was disorganised but with 13 km to go the gap between the two groups was just 12 seconds as the leaders climbed the Waldhaus for the second time. Zampieri won the climb ahead of Canada, Camenzind and Ullrich, while Fabian Jeker (Saunier Duval) managed to jump across to the leaders on the climb. With five men working hard in front, the field was never able to come back, despite a bridging attempt by Rik Verbrugghe (Lotto-Domo), who immediately ended up with Vinokourov on his wheel. In the last kilometre, it was Canada pulling the break for his teammate Jeker, who was in fourth wheel behind Ullrich and Camenzind. Ullrich kept his position, constantly looking around at the others before launching his sprint with 250m to go. Camenzind tried to pass him on the inside but wasn't able to get round in time, and Ullrich led the Swiss rider over the line to victory.
