The 56th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - 2.HCFrance, June 6-13, 2004Main page Results Stage profile Previous Stage Next stage Stage 3 - June 9: Saint-Etienne - Aubenas, 180 kmPortal opens the door to the TourBuffalo Gutierrez keeps lead; Tomorrow...Le Mont VentouxBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Aubenas It's on everybody's mind, that big white monster of a mountain looming on the horizon like Moby Dick. But before the peloton could turn its collective attention to tomorrow's terrible time test up Le Mont Ventoux, first there was Stage 3's 180kmto get through: a hot, hard ride across the tough climbs of the Cevennes. Like the Basque country, the Cevennes is a coal mining region and Euskaltel-Euskadi rider Iker Flores tried to turn the tables today on Phonak's race leader José Gutierrez like he pulled on the Basque team yesterday, and take back the yellow and blue leader's jersey of the Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré. In the end it was former mountain biker Nicolas Portal (Ag2r Prevoyance) who turned the tables on Flores and his other break partner, Estonian champion Janek Tombak (Cofidis), to get away on the final winding ascent to the hill town of Aubenas for the win. After pouring a litre of cold water over his head on the 35 degree day, a delighted Portal exclaimed, "It was a really good win for me today. I have to thank my team, who have believed in me all along, and my physical therapist who has helped me with my back problems." Portal's Ag2r team manager Vincent Lavenu was also happy with Portal's result. "He's a good young rider, Portal. He's had some physical problems this season, but he has a lot of character. Today he scored a lot of points towards being selected to ride the Tour de France." Flores and the Euskaltel mob didn't manage to shake Phonak's José Gutierrez from the race lead today. Nicknamed Buffalo, the big ex-Kelme man has no illusions about his chances tomorrow on le Mont Ventoux. "I'm happy to have the lead now, but I am no specialist at this type of uphill TT, so I just hope I can follow Iban Mayo for as long as possible when he passes me." Winning the group sprint for fourth today, Cofidis man Stuart O'Grady had donned the Maillot Vert as Dauphiné Libéré points leader. "I'm feeling really, really good; my form in the last few weeks has been even surprising to me. It's called confidence...I've been lacking it for quite a while, with all the turmoil of the season. But the last five races, I haven't finished any further back than fifth, so it's kind of snowballing now. It's been a tough middle of a season and now I can't wait for the Tour De France." Cyclingnews asked O'Grady if his ambition in the French tour was focused on wearing the Maillot Vert there, and his ambitious answer was brimming with confidence. "Hopefully I'll have a shade of Yellow (Jersey) before and then a Green one...the Tour De France is a special race and I'm not going in with any obligations. You just give it 100 percent whenever the opportunity arises and hopefully the results will follow that." Like everyone else, Lance Armstrong had a hot, hard race today, but Armstrong's stage may have had a slight advantage on the other 92 members of the Dauphiné peloton. Armstrong finished 9th today in the same group as O'Grady, testing a new Trek Madone prototype before his ascent of le Mont Ventoux tomorrow. "Light" was the one word a smiling Armstrong said to Cyclingnews this morning at the start in St. Etienne. How it unfoldedThe 95 strong Dauphiné Libéré peloton left St.Etienne this Wednesday at 11:30 on a hot summer morning, the city where Cofidis rider Andrei "Kivi" Kivilev lost his life last year from a crash in Paris-Nice. The pace was easy on the way to the first climb of the day, the 12 km ascent of the Col de la Republique. The Dauphiné riders knew they were in for a hot one today, as the temperatures were already in the upper 20's. Jerome Pineau (Brioches Boulanger) opened the hostilities with an attack near the summit and this opened the floodgates for multiple attacks down the Republique descent. It was a short transition to the next ascent of the Cat.3 Col de la Burdignes after 30 km, where Iker Flores (Euskaltel-Euskadi) attacked and was first over the top, with Tombak (Cofidis) and Portal chasing at 0'20 and the Phonak led peloton at 0'40. Pineau bridged on the descent and after 40 km, the peloton stopped chasing and the front quartet began to gain ground fast. At the sprint in Quintenas after 55km, the temperature was 32 degrees and climbing as Tombak took the points and Pineau followed his team director's orders and sat up to wait for the peloton chasing 2'45 behind. Up and down on the accidented terrain, the trio forged on towards Aubenas with a solid lead of 4'45 after 120 km. With 36 km to go at the summit of the Cat.2 Col de Mezilhac, Iker Flores had attacked the break and was flying towards Aubenas, 1'15 ahead of former break companions Tombak and Portal with the peloton at 5'10. On the difficult descent, Brioches rider Pichon went off the road and flew into a 15m deep ravine. He sustained a head trauma, facial injuries and possible broken leg and arm, but regained consciousness. Portal and Tombak caught Flores on the descent to Aubenas with 15 km to go. On the tricky, winding climb into Aubenas, Portal attacked with 5 km to go and rode home the winner, while O'Grady took the group sprint for fourth, 1'49 behind. Stage 4 - June 10: Bedoin-le Mont Ventoux ITT, 21.6kmOne the most legendary climbs in cycling history, a victory at the summit of the long, tough ascent of Le Mont Ventoux (the windy mountain) is one of the most cherished trophies in the two wheel sport. Mont Ventoux is an extinct volcano that looms 1909m above the Provençal countryside and above the treeline after le Chalet Reynard at 1500m of altitude, the bare white rock field reflects the sun like a diabolical mirror. Thursday's weather report offers highs in the low thirties, with a south-west wind of 15km/h that will provide a tailwind on the first 5.7 km stretch to the virage di St.Esteve. American Lance Armstrong has never won atop le Mont Ventoux and for the tough Texan, it will be an addition to his palmares that will have a double meaning. Why? This morning, Armstrong called the Ventoux ascent relentless and the five time Tour champion wants to test himself and his special equipment before the l'Alpe d'Huez TT in next month's Tour De France. The record up le Mont Ventoux is also the property of another American, Lance's former USPS teammate Jonathan Vaughters. The Colorado climber clocked 56'50 five years ago in the Dauphiné, beating the not yet Tour De France winner Armstrong by 0'58 and Hamilton by 2'19! It makes you wonder what Vaughters would have done if he hadn't crashed out of the Tour de France that year. Lance's main rivals for his big test tomorrow will clearly be Iban Mayo, Phonak riders Hamilton and Sevilla, Rabobankers Leipheimer and Rasmussen, Cofidis's Moncoutié and perhaps Credit Agricole's Christophe Moreau. Look for USPS-Berry Floor's Floyd Landis to have a good day; he's been climbing exceptionally well in training in hot Southern California
