The 56th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - 2.HCFrance, June 6-13, 2004Main page Results Stage profile Previous Stage Next stage Stage 2 - June 8: Bron - Saint-Etienne, 181 kmPhonak's Gutierrez grabs Dauphiné leadBy Tim Maloney in Saint-Etienne José Gutierrez toiled in anonymity for six years at Kelme as a powerful support rider for leaders like Heras, Gonzalez and Valverde. Last season, he joined his former team director Alvaro Pino at the Phonak squad and today, his move from the troubled Kelme team paid off. Fifth in Saturday's Classique des Alpes, the in-form 29 year old from Valencia not only took his third career stage win, but he also took over the race lead from Euskaltel's Iban Mayo. As CSC's Carlos Sastre did last last year in the Tour de France, new father Gutierrez crossed the finish line today cradling an imaginary baby in his arms. "We had no special plan in the final today," explained the delighted Gutierrez after the stage. "I was free to do what I wanted and I saw a lot of people were suffering. I felt good, so I went for it. I'm really happy today. It's very special." Mayo and Lance Armstrong both finished in a 42 rider group 7" behind Gutierrez, as the hot, hard ascent took its toll on the rest of the Dauphiné peloton. USPS-Berry Floor director Johan Bruyneel was pleased with his team's performance today, telling Cyclingnews that "Things went well for us today. Euskaltel rode strong tempo all day and we could just sit in the peloton." Only Peña, Hincapie and Ekimov didn't make the split, while Noval and Landis rode strong support for Armstrong on the crucial final climb. Tyler Hamilton (Phonak) lost some time in the final phase of the Col de la Croix de Chaubouret, but he got back on the descent after dropping 20" back at one point. But the Man from Marblehead wasn't worried with his moment of weakness. Hamilton told Cyclingnews after Stage 2 that "It's been a month since I've raced (at the Tour de Romandie) and with 230km yesterday, 180km today and the heat, it was hard. I was definitely dehydrated and started cramping so there is nothing you can do then. It usually takes me a few days to get acclimated to the heat." Hamilton told his Phonak squad that he was going to put in two 100% efforts at the Dauphiné: the prologue and the Mont Ventoux time trial. "Otherwise I'll just take it day by day." Flying Dutchman Erik Dekker was out front for most of the day and his good climbing legs brought him the red and white polka-dot jersey of Dauphine's best climber in Saint-Etienne. "It was my plan to go after the mountains jersey today since I won one yesterday," Dekker explained. "It was a good day for me today." How it unfoldedIt was another hot sunny morning in the Lyon suburbs as the Dauphiné Libéré peloton headed out of town and just as the riders passed the town line of into Chasssieu, an attack of five riders gapped the group. Guillaume Auger (RAGT Semences-MG Rover) made the move and was joined by Anthony Geslin (Brioches La Boulangère), tall man Andy Flickinger (Ag2r-Prévoyance) and two Rabobankers, Dekker and Karsten Kroon. After a halfhearted chase by Crédit Agricole, the peloton let the lead quintet have their way and they began to gain ground quickly. On the day's first climb of Cote de Marnans after 70km, the five had a 4'20 lead on the peloton. The parcours now headed west across the Rhone River valley and up into the arid Cevennes region in the Departement du Drome. After the feed zone at the stage's halfway point, the quintet had almost 5' advance on the Euskaltel-led peloton and 10 kilometres later, as the afternoon sun began to bake down, the front riders hit the Cote du Chateauneuf-sur-Galure. Dekker took the KOM points again as the lead was stable, but after the orange clad Basque boys of Euskaltel had digested their afternoon snack, they began to up the tempo at the front. As Dekker took his third KOM on the Cat. 4 Cote de Saint-Desirat (km 131) with the mountains behind Saint-Etienne looming, the break's lead had been cut in half to 2'40 under the impulsion of Euskaltel. Fifteen kilometres later on the next Cat. 4 climb, the Col de Fayet, it was Dekker again, but the fast-closing peloton was just 1' behind. As the final part of the day's climb up to the 1201 metre summit of the Col de la Croix de Chaubouret began, the break was still away, but the orange wave at the head of the peloton was hot on its heels. Auger went out the back as the road went up and soon the break was absorbed with 20km to go. Geslin had a go up front but was brought back, then young French climber Ludovic Martin (Crédit Agricole) made a move and got 15" but his attack was also soon neutralized. Phonak had been riding intelligently all day, letting Euskaltel do the work and with 2km to go to the col's summit, Gutierrez made his move and blasted by the struggling Frenchman. Behind him, USPS-Berry Floor's Benjamin Noval led the chase, followed by his team leader Armstrong, maillot jaune Mayo, Juan Miguel Mercado (Quick.Step-Davitamon) and several others. When Gutierrez made his move, his Phonak team leader Hamilton dropped 100m off the pace, but eventually got back into the front group. Down the long descent into Saint-Etienne, Gutierrez powered away 20" ahead of the chasers and despite the hard pulls behind him, the powerful rider from Valencia rode to the stage win on Cours Fauriel, 7" ahead of his teammate Dessel who took the sprint for second. Thanks to his perfectly timed move on the Col de la Croix de Chaubouret and the 10" stage winner's time bonus, Gutierrez took the race lead from Euskaltel's Iban Mayo. Stage 3 - June 9: Saint-Etienne - Aubenas, 180kmWednesday's Stage Three heads due south across the corrugated terrain of the Cevennes through the Departement de la Ardeche to Aubenas. With more hot June temps and plenty of climbing, Stage Three will be another difficult day at the 56th Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré. Right from the get-go, the peloton climbs out of town up the 12km ascent of Col de la Republique, with three more cols on the menu du jour before the final tricky uphill finish with three hills in the last 3km. into Aubenas.
