The 56th Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré - 2.HCFrance, June 6-13, 2004Main page Results Stage profile Previous Stage Next stage Stage 1 - June 7: Megève - Bron, 231 kmThor strikes like lightning in LyonDauphiné leader Mayo tranquilloBy Tim Maloney in Bron On a hot and windless June Monday, Norwegian Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) threw down his lightning bolt sprint on Ave. François Mitterand in Bron to take the win in Stage 1 of the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré in front of Australian Stuey O'Grady (Cofidis) and Sammy Dumoulin (Ag2r), with Baden Cooke (FDJeux.com) in 4th and rapid Rabobanker Oscar Freire 5th. Nordic powerhouse Hushovd has been winning almost everything in sight this season in France and leads the Coupe de France competition. Hushovd told Cyclingnews after the stage that "I'm happy that I won today and especially my boss (Credit Agricole director Roger Legeay) is happy." With the departure of O'Grady from Credit Agricole this season, Hushovd has gotten a promotion and is now co-leader with Christophe Moreau, a situation that makes the 26 year old Norwegian feel positive with the Tour De France in sight. "I'm making more progress every year as all the hard training I'm doing every winter is paying off for me", said Hushovd. "At the Tour, I know Petacchi and Boonen are really fast, but I'm still working hard on my sprinting and I think on a good day, I can beat them." A dejected Jimmy Casper (Cofidis) remained philosophical after being caught with 2 km to go after being away solo for 175 km, then spending the last 50 km in a two-up effort with Christophe Laurent (R.A.G.T. Semences) who bridged across to the Cofidis man near Champtel with 50 km to race. "When we got caught, I was pretty disappointed. I thought we were going to make it...we almost made it," said Casper. But Casper learned the hard way that the sprinters trains were riding in the final today when he and Laurent were caught with the 1 km flamme rouge in sight, and will have to console himself with taking the blue sprinter's jersey from Pereiro thanks to his long break today. Although he was quiet today, Rabobank's Erik Dekker always has an interesting and informed take on the day's race. Dekker told Cyclingnews that "it was a really controlled but long and easy stage today...it was hot, too. I'm feeling OK and my form is good for now. At the Tour I'll certainly try to win a stage but I know how difficult it will be. I'm also looking past the Tour to the World Cup classics and the Olympics. I've been to Athens this winter and I like the parcours, but it will also be good for a lot of guys." How it unfoldedAfter 4km on the long downhill from Megeve, to Sallanches, Jimmy "Friendly Ghost" Casper (Cofidis) got bored with riding along with his fellow pro's in the Dauphiné Libéré peloton and disappeared up the road. No one seemed to notice and in ectoplasmic fashion, the muscular little sprinter suddenly, inexplicably became a courageous breakaway rider on the Dauphiné Libéré's longest day. Perhaps Casper had an existential crisis after reading an Albert Camus comic book and switched personalities with his putative twin brother Samuel Dumoulin. No matter, because the DL peloton simply wasn't concerned with Casper and his lead hit 17'00 at the feed zone in Ruffieux after 120km and with 110km to go. After the peloton ate lunch a quarter of an hour after the passing of the ghostly Casper, a chase tempo began under the impulsion of FDJeux.com, who were not about to let their former teammate Casper ride into Bron a stage winner. With 80 km to go, Casper was at 11'00, and at the sprint in Morestel his lead had dropped again to 5'00. After five hours solo across the hinterlands of Haut-Savoie towards the urban sprawl of Lyon, Casper was beginning to tire and the FDJeux.com and Phonak led peloton was beginning to smell fresh ghost meat up the road. As the gap fell to less than 1'00 with 55km to go after the sprint in Morestel, Christophe Laurent (R.A.G.T. Semences) attacked and bridged across to Casper and suddenly there was a front duo with 50 km to go. This move seemed to confuse the chasing peloton for a while and the duo got their lead back up to 3'00. But the sprinters teams, led by FDJeux.com, Cofidis and Credit Agricole were still enticed by the lure of a stage win and continued to crank up the pace behind. Casper and Laurent came back with 2 km to go, and with wins in both of the day's sprints in Sallenove and Morestel, Casper had done his ghostly duty and captured enough points to take over the Maillot Bleu of Best Sprinter. Both Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré leader Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and 2003 DL champ Lance Armstrong (USPS-Berry Floor) finished in the peloton. Stage 2 - June 9: Bron (Lyon)-St. Etienne 181 kmTuesday's Stage 2 isn't that long, but with the heat hovering at the 30 degree celsius mark and some hard climbing, the DL peloton likely won't arrive in St.Etienne, the former French capital of bicycle manufacturing, all together as in Bron the day before. The final ascent from the Rhône River valley up the Cote de Saint-Desirat (Cat.4) after 131 km, Col de Fayet (Cat.4) after 145 km and Col de la Croix de Chabouret (Cat.2, 1201m) at 165km is followed by the fast, steep descent of Rochetaille before the traditional finish on Cours Fauriel.
