It could only be Perdi

The second stage of the Volta a Catalunya, 145.4 kilometres from Salou to Horta de Sant Joan, was taken out by the seemingly unbeatable Miguel Angel Martin Perdiguero (Saunier Duval-Prodir). Perdi, who seems to be able to challenge on all sorts of terrain and thrives on a rolling, complicated circuit, built himself a nice little gap during the last kilometre of the stage accompanied by Vladimir Karpets (Illes Balears-Banesto). Perdi sat on the Russian's wheel as the road kicked up to the finish in the medieval-like village perched atop a barren rocky landscape. With 150 metres to go as Karpets was losing steam, Perdi jumped and managed to show him and the closing bunch a clean pair of wheels to take the win. Karpets came in second and gained quite a nice consolation prize: the race leader's green and white jersey.
The win was Perdi's fourth in his three most recent tours (Asturias, the Euskal and Catalunya) but for Saunier Duval director Matxin's boys, the result makes up a little for yesterday's disappointing result in the team time trial. Local Catalan rider Joaquim Fernandez is the team leader for the week and at the start he admitted that they had not done as well as expected yesterday but that he had not lost hope of taking this year's two Catalan tours after winning the Setmana Catalana earlier in the season.
How it unfolded
The day was full of nerves and the opening kilometres saw a number of attempts by riders to get away. It wasn't until the 82nd kilometre that Relax-Bodysol rider Jose Luis Rebollo and US Postal Service's Jurgen Van den Broeck initiated what was to become the day's rabbit for the pursuing peloton. As Rebollo passed first over the top of the Cat. 2 Coll de Paumeres they had managed to hold their advantage, which at its highest was two minutes over the bunch.
Behind Saunier Duval, Lampre and in particular Gerolsteiner marked out the rhythm in the peloton. For a while Saunier Duval fractured the bunch as it descended the uncategorised Coll del Moro with a little more than 30 kilometres to the finish. The gap to the leaders was at this point hanging at about 50 seconds. The peloton was in the hunt but the rolling course, wind and wet roads seemed to dull their pace.
All appeared to be going normal until with about 18 kilometres to go the road took a left turn and transformed from being a nice wide, black tarred strip to a narrow, windy, grey metalled back road. The rain had left the road wet and even taking the corner off the main road took some care. From this point the road descended, snaking through the rock cutaways on either of its side. The falls started and as the road snaked back and forth, riders started to find their wheels sliding out from under them as they negotiated the bends.
After taking the first mountain points of the Volta, Euskaltel's Gorka Arrizabalaga was amongst the first group to find himself skating along the wet surface. As he remounted and got under way, Lampre's Mauro Facci imitated a speedway motorcyclist (without leathers) as he slid off the left bank of the road to find the gutter. Arrizabalaga had to stop again as Facci stood up, his arms dripping blood; the Euskaltel rider's wheels had not come off too well from his horizontal journey across the asphalt.
The falls caused the race to once again fracture. Whilst Rebollo and Van den Broeck were still away, four riders had managed to make a significant space between themselves and the bunch: Paco Lara and Jorge Ferrio (Paternina-Costa Almeria) and Uwe Hardter and Peter Wrolich (Gerolsteiner) were powering across to the day's break. Behind the peloton look fairly well diminished as those behind tried to find their way back on and the those within the bunch tried to reorganise some semblance of a chase.
As Rebollo snuck away from his break partner, the four chasers arrived to join Van den Broek. Paco Lara, who seems to have been constantly on the attack for the last two months, didn't wait to say "Hola" and pursued Rebollo, the Paternina rider himself pursued by the Austrian Wrolich. The three soon came together at the head of the race and then Lara ruptured that with a strong change of pace on one of the numerous upward "repechos".
For a while Wrolich sat alone in chase with Rebollo behind, both in no man's land as Lara powered ahead and Saunier Duval drove the bunch, looking to preserve the options of Rodriguez and sensing the possibility of running down Lara and setting up Perdi. Rebollo regained Wrolich's wheel and set the pace in pursuit of the Paternina rider who now with 5 kms to go had got himself a gap of 20 seconds.
With four kilometres left, only Lara was left out of the peloton's fold, but the gap was sitting at 27 seconds. As the day's final climb started (other than the slant upward to the finishing town which in itself was steep enough), Saunier and USPS were really putting down the pace on the front, shelling riders out the back.
With 3kms the gap was 25 seconds, it was then downhill and across with the last kilometre upwards. As they hit the final kilometre the driving on the front saw Lara just holding a 100 metre gap. José Arrieta (Illes Balears) attacked as the ramp commenced and met the fading Lara. With him came Aitor Gonzalez (Fassa) and Lara and Karpets joined them. And then came, flying across the space, Perdi. He and Karpets made a gap and then all bets were off. In this sort of uphill one on one sprint only one man could be said to be a certainty, and it was Perdi. With 150 meters to go he jumped and that was that, another win for Perdi and Matxin's boys.
Tomorrow is the Volta's longest day, 200 kilometres up to the ski station at Pal in Andorra. It will be a day for the race contenders to lay some cards on the table.
