Perdi completes at Catalunya

Miguel Angel Martin Perdiguero was declared the winner on Sunday in Barcelona of the 84th edition of the Volta a Catalunya after holding on to the lead since the mid week mountain time trial to Arcalís which marked his third consecutive stage victory in this year's race.
The four category three climbs spread throughout the 132 kilometres of the final stage did nothing to dent the pace of the riders and with the capture of a six man breakaway in the final kilometres to downtown Barcelona, Illes Balears sprinter Isaac Galvez made up for his relegation earlier in the week by both being the first man across the line in the bunch sprint.
The day was not without drama as Saunier Duval had to withstand a series of attacks aimed at unseating Perdi on the route to the Catalan capital. The race crossed the Alto de Vacarisses three times and it was on the second crossing that the day's main break escaped Saunier Duval's control. The break included Rene Andrle (Liberty Seguros) Moises Duenas (Relax-Bodysol), Michael Barry (US Postal Service), Juan Antonio Flecha (Fassa-Bortolo), Felix Cardenas (Cafes Baque) and Pablo Lastras (Illes Balears-Banesto) and built up a lead of 3.10 by the 70 kilometre mark, at which point Lastras had put himself into the virtual lead. For a long time Saunier Duval chased hard but the rolling course made it difficult and the yellow bus sheltering Perdi just couldn't quite get the start they needed to minimise the difference to the the break.
Barcelona is an ancient city that has undergone periodic renovations, often on a grand scale. One result of these was the creation in the 19th century of long straight boulevards that dissect at different angles the tangle of narrow streets characteristic of so many European cities. From the entry into Barcelona the race careened down one of these boulevards towards the finish in the Plaça Catalunya. It was a final twenty kilometres from the outskirts of the city, characterised essentially by one long straight wide road, albeit with a bit of a hump in the middle. Here Saunier Duval with the enlisted support of Gerolsteiner and De Nardi finally started to reduce the gap.
Ahead the break members where starting to become distrustful of each other and as they got closer to home and with their gap starting to fall below two minutes they began to attack one another. It was Postal's Michael Barry who started the trend, followed by Flecha. With 11 kms left, and from that point on, it was one rider after another trying to get the advantage as the peloton loomed ever closer. The gap had stood at 2'02 at the 20 km to go mark, about 1'10 at the 10 km to go mark and 20 seconds at 2 km to go. During the final half of this period the group of six were alternatively ont he attack, looking at each other, or strung out and chasing each other down. They seemed to swerve from the gutter on one side of the four lane straight boulevard to the other each time they sought to create some space or attempt to force the following wheel through to the front.
Under the one kilometre to go banner the peloton had all but made the capture, better late than never for the sprinters and for Perdi and his teammates. Lastras gave it one last effort and hung off the front by a few metres for another four or five hundred metres. With 500 metres o go it was finally all back together as Gerolsteiner started to rev it up even more to try and launch Hondo. On his wheel however was Illes Balears' Isaac Galvez.
Galvez came past the German rider with a couple of hundred metres left, down the middle of the road and held off all comers, and in doing so marked another good day for his team, having put the pressure on all day with Lastras in the break, they never gave up.
For Perdi the Volta marks his second career stage race victory. Although the 2000 Vuelta a Rioja (when he was with Vitalicio Seguros) and the 1999 Vuelta a Puertos (in his ONCE year) are dwarfed in comparison to the HC Volta a Catalunya and the manner in which he earned this win. From being known as a small bunch sprint specialist, he can now climb with some of the best and even time trial when the occasion requires it. It is a transformation of a promising strong rider into yet another team leader for Matxin's young team that is brimming with experience.
Perdi, feet solidly on the ground commented after the race that "I have won the most important test of my life and the team has been fantastic. From here I go to compete in the Spanish Championships and hopefully the Olympics.
"For many years and various teams, I have had to work for others and I have tried to take advantage of the few opportunities I have had," he added. "I was comfortable and secure with my chances. It is possible that many are surprised by my triumphs in the mountains, but for me it is not a surprise".
At 31 one years of age and a professional since 1997, having ridden with Kelme, ONCE, Vitalicio, Cantina Tollo, Acqua & Sapone and Domina Vacanze, Perdi's wins this week give him over twenty race victories. He said that the confidence he has been given by Saunier Duval and by the team's Director Josean Fernández Matxin is the key to his metamorphosis. The fastman who could get over the medium sized mountains has now made the move to be able to win on all terrain and as a result become a solid GC contender in the week long tours that crowd the annual calendar
