Joseph Sunde Memorial CriteriumsHeffron Park, Maroubra, Australia, January 26, 2004Handicap & WomenTopfer gets the doubleBy John Sunde In the support events, Charlie Topfer scored a unique double when he won the 30km masters race, then rode in the group handicap race which followed and won that as well. Many riders have competed in more than one event in the past, but no one has ever managed to notch up two wins in two races. Easts rider Craig Dempsey also performed with distinction in both events by placing 2nd in the Masters race and 4th in the Handicap. Unfortunately both events were marred by falls as a result of the windy conditions. The worst fall occurred 2 laps into the Handicap event when Chris Young fell heavily fracturing his leg. Best wishes to Chris for his recovery. The fall necessitated the handicap race to be held up for over half an hour before it was restarted over a shortened distance of 10 laps.
