9th Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.2Malaysia, February 6-15, 2004Home Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 7 - February 12: Pontian - Melaka, 166.7 kmBuonissimo Luciano! Pagliarini powers home for the winColombians get the day offBy Anthony Tan in Melaka In a perfectly calculated sprint finish, bello Brazilian Luciano Pagliarini (Lampre) took advantage of the strong headwind blowing down the finishing straight in Melaka to take out the seventh stage of the Le Tour de Langkawi. Just when points leader Gordon Fraser (Health Net/Maxxis) thought the stage was his, the veteran Canadian kicking hard off the wheel of Panaria-Margres' Graeme Brown with 80 metres to go, 25 year-old powerhouse Pagliarini used his Lampre lead-out train to perfection, flying through on the inside to claim the fifth win of his professional career. "All day there was a lot of wind and I knew heading into the finish, I would have to sprint at the very last moment," recalled a beaming Pagliarini to Cyclingnews. "When I came into the finishing straight, I calculated which which way the wind was coming and left it to the very last minute to come around [Graeme] Brown. Asked if today was sweet revenge for his second place to Ivan Quaranta (Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave) the day before, Pagliarini told Cyclingnews he was more disappointed with the organisational bungle and the resulting missed opportunity on the opening stage of the TMLTdL than losing to Italian fastman Quaranta on yesterday's stage to Johor Bahru. "After my victories last year, the team has a lot of confidence in me; our team was very disappointed with the race being called off the first day because we thought we had a good chance to win," he said. "This is my fifth victory as a professional, and I'd really like to thank all my team-mates, mechanics and managers for continuing to have confidence in me." Despite an early break of six going clear shortly after the start followed by another solo attack by Japan's Shinichi Fukushima as soon as the sextet were reeled in at around the 70 kilometre mark, today's stage was considerably less stressful for the race leader's team of Colombia Selle-Italia - who yesterday, were under fire and at times in trouble on the road Johor Bahru. With a short, sub-100 kilometre stage from Port Dickson to Shah Alam tomorrow before the decisive queen stage to Genting Highlands on Saturday, the "day-off" for Directorre-Sportivo Gianni Savio's troops should bode well for Stage 9 to Genting. "Certainly, today was a little bit easier than yesterday and I'd like to thank all my team-mates for their efforts over the last two stages," said overall leader Marlon Perez to Cyclingnews. "Hopefully, today's stage will have not been too bad for their legs and they'll be in good condition for the remainder of the week." How it unfoldedAs the 125 riders left in the race made an about-turn and headed north along a mostly flat parcours, direction Melaka, conditions were ripe for a dangerous break with a strong cross-headwind blowing in west from the coast. Sweltering conditions may have discouraged some early in the peace, however being Day 7, riders had acclimatised and were more than ready to race the full 166.7 kilometres. After another animated start, Shinichi Fukushima (Japan) did his usual Jacky Durand-style trick of going solo off the front of the peloton early on, but as per normal, Fukushima was brought back almost before Race Director Pat McQuaid announced he was away. A few clicks later at km 20, shortly after the first sprint, a posse of seven managed to escape - including Alessandro Cortinovis (Lampre), Rafael Nuritdinov (De Nardi), Danny Pate (Health Net presented by Maxxis), Jasper Lenferink (Bert Story-Piels), Yasutaka Tashiro (Japan), Peter Wedge (Canada) and Eugene Moriarty (Ireland) - but the peloton's vigilance rarely allowed the septet's advantage to grow more than a minute, and with 47.7 kilometres covered in the first hour's racing, it was all back together by km 54. 1000 metres down the road, Japan's Shinichi Fukushima decided to give it another bash, and this time, Fukushima was away. Approaching the feed zone at Batu Pahat (km 67.9), the peloton appeared to be in a go-slow; quite unexpectedly, riders were seen chatting away as if at an afternoon tea-party than a stage of the biggest road race in the southern hemisphere. Then again, we were talking about one of brothers Fukushima... By km 118, Shinichi Fukushima's lead reached a maximum 2'18, the tenacious if not purposeless attacker securing two out the three intermediate sprints. Perhaps more significant was points leader Gordon Fraser's (Health Net/Maxxis) first, second and third placings at these three checkpoints, whose gigantic lead in the sprints classification can now only be described as unassailable. With 20 k's to go, Fukushima was dying a thousand deaths, and as the Lampre and Relax Bodysol teams took charge at the head of the pack, his one and a half minute advantage was decimated within a matter of kilometres. As the Japanese rider was swept up by the broom of the peloton, the sprinter's teams of Health Net and Panaria came to the fore, riding their butts off for Fraser and Graeme Brown, the Australian suffering from stomach problems earlier in the day but the whiff of a sprint finish too hard to resist. Coming to a fork in the road with just two kilometres left in the bike race, a Malaysian rider collided with a traffic policeman, totally disrupting Brown's Panaria-Margres train of Lancaster, Baliani and Matveiev, but somehow "Brownie" managed to dive onto another wheel as the peloton began the final dash for cash. In the final 200 metres, Fraser looked to have the race sewn up as he glued himself to the wheel of Brown, the Aussie forced to go way too early into a headwind finish. But it was Lampre's Luciano Pagliarini who judged his sprint to absolute perfection, taking the narrower but wind-protected route up against the right hand barrier and kicking hard with less than 50 metres remaining to out-gun the Canadian and out-class Brown to take win number five in his fourth year as a professional. Said a defeated but not totally despondent Fraser afterwards: "I think the main thing today was the strong headwind, and that makes it difficult to control - you burn your guys a lot faster in a headwind - and as a result, it's a little more chaotic. "I think my lead-out man, Greg [Henderson] was just missing a bit of power there, and we got over-run by Graeme [Brown], which is actually the best thing that could have happened to me in a headwind situation. If it was a tailwind, we might see Graeme up here and not us. I'm a little disappointed with second, but it's not too bad given the quality of the field here - any sprinter is world-class, so I can't be too disappointed," he said.
