9th Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.2Malaysia, February 6-15, 2004Home Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 4 - February 9: Hulu Kelang - Tampin, 147.8 kmSullivan strikes it rich, but a difficult day for the ColombiansBy Anthony Tan in Tampin Today on the road from Hulu Kelang to Tampin, a distance of 147.8 kilometres down the Malaysian west coast, the Tour de Langkawi witnessed the second long-haul breakaway victory by an Australian rider in as many days. In what was largely a two-up time trial between De Nardi's Devis Miorin and Aussie Sean Sullivan (Barloworld), the 25 year-old used a combination of strength and cunning to clock up the first victory of his professional career under almost identical circumstances to countryman Brett Lancaster's win in Raub the previous day. "The race started very fast; the first hour we were doing 45-50-55 k's an hour the whole time, and like we saw yesterday, it [the high speed] goes for a long time, then it eases up, then always a break goes," Sullivan recalled to Cyclingnews when asked on the possibility of a break going two days in a row so early in the stage. "Then a break went with three that had Ryan Cox (Barloworld) in there, but because of his position on classement, he probably knew it wasn't going to go. So when he came back, I saw the opportunity to go across to the other two riders. We were there for a long time with about 45 seconds to one minute, and at one stage we virtually sat up and thought the break was going to come back, but after the second KOM (km 85.4), we thought we'd just keep riding and see what happens." What happened further down the road surprised even Sullivan himself. Starting off the day at 5'36 behind race leader Gonzalez and with 20 kilometres remaining, Sullivan almost became the virtual race leader when he and Miorin (16'54 behind Gonzalez) were 5'14 ahead of the peloton. However, when the pair received word that Colombia Selle-Italia had sent all seven troops to the front of the bunch, Sullivan thought only of a stage win: "After the last KOM (km 116.7), I think we had about five and a half minutes, which was about as far as I was behind the leader, but I knew the peloton would always be riding faster than us towards the finish," he said. "We weren't absolutely sure we were going to win, but we knew it'd be close and we'd have a good chance. At about 10 kilometres to go, we were both trying to conserve energy, and by then, I just wanted to win the stage. It's my first win as a professional, so I'm happy!" With victory just about guaranteed, the sprinters' teams weren't willing to chase, leaving much of the work in the latter half of the race to Colombia Selle Italia, who spent the last third of the race on the front riding hard tempo - something that didn't count on doing, and as race leader Freddy Gonzalez said after the stage, something that may cost them in tomorrow's 18 kilometre race of truth in the streets of Melaka. "The team was not worried at first; we wanted to keep the break to around three minutes, but as it got towards the end of the race, we thought the sprinters' teams would lift up the pace and the break would come back, but we were surprised when none of the other teams took chase," said Gonzalez. "When the break went up to what was more or less a dangerous situation, over the three minute mark, that's when we had to work really hard as a team; we are already one rider down, so it wasn't really an easy stage for us." How it unfolded With temperatures again returning to the low to mid 30s and sauna-like humidity, riders spent much of this morning's stage under the shade of the palm trees lining Zoo Negara at the stage start in Hulu Kelang. But with pythons, falcons and chimpanzees finding their homes invaded by the moving cavalcade that is the Tour de Langkawi, there was no time for nodding off. Wide awake was national road champion Shinichi Fukushima (Japan) who appears to be following in his sibling's footsteps, his brother Koji notable for launching himself off the front straight after the neutral zone at virtually every opportunity in last year's race. Like Koji, however, Shinichi Fukushima's move bore no fruit apart from angry mutterings in the peloton. As Roland Green said to Cyclingnews before the stage, "No-one wants to be the first arsehole to attack." No-one told the brothers Fukushima that. Like yesterday, Fukushima's early attack became a prelude to a smothering of countermoves, with the first serious break going clear after the first sprint (km 25.9) containing Alessandro Cortinovis (Lampre), Devis Miorin (De Nardi) and Ryan Cox (Barloworld). However, with Cox lying just 27 seconds behind overnight leader Freddy Gonzalez (Colombia Selle-Italia), Cox retreated to the peloton, only to be replaced by team-mate Sean Sullivan, who bridged across to Cortinovis and Miorin at 40 kilometre mark. Sensing danger, Colombia Selle-Italia Diretorre-Sportivo Gianna Savio motioned his men to the head of the main group, but the trio fought bravely over the first KOM at Mantin (km 57.9) and the next at Bukit Putus (km 85.4), their slender margin hovering ever so gently under the 60 second mark. Shortly before the second climb, Cortinovis (Lampre) was the first to crack, but Sullivan (Barloworld) and Miorin (De Nardi) soldiered on, and just over the top of Bukit Putus at km 90, their vigilance was rewarded as their lead crept over the magical one minute mark. Ten kilometres later, Sullivan and Miorin's advantage had blown out to four minutes-plus as the elastic band between them and the peloton snapped. At km 114, Brice Jones, Michael Sayers (Health Net presented by Maxxis) and Albert Primero (Pagcor-Casino Filipino) took off in pursuit, but it was too few men, and way too late. Aiding the lead duo was a lack of cohesion back in the peloton. Quite unexpectedly from Colombia Selle-Italia's perspective, the sprinters' teams of Panaria-Margres, Lampre and Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave decided not to bother to give chase, leaving all the work in the hands of the six men - actually, five excluding race leader Freddy Gonzalez, who was dutifully excused from going balls-out beginning from the bottom of final climb in Senaling (km 113.7). Nearing the finish in Tampin (km 147.8), victory by either Sullivan (Barloworld) or Miorin (De Nardi) was assured, with the pair treating the finish like a track sprint. The 25 year-old Barloworld rider knew Miorin was suffering from cramps, and in the end, Sullivan was simply too strong, surging past the Italian in the final 50 metres. A combination of cat-and-mouse tactics between Sullivan and Miorin and the en-bloc effort of Colombia Selle-Italia reduced the winning margin to 1'29 over fifth-placed Gordon Fraser (Health Net), who retained his ever-increasing lead in the points classification. "I didn't feel super good for the sprint, so I wasn't that confident, and I figured having the points go up the road was a good thing for me and the jersey," said Fraser to Cyclingnews. "But it worked out for me in the sprint, so it was a weird day. No sprinter's team wanted to invest the work when you're not sprinting for first - it's too hard with the heat and stuff, so it was pretty conservative with the sprinters' teams in the finale. If there was a smaller gap, maybe there would be more interest to bring the break back with strong riders like Sean and Moirin. I've been burning a lot of matches, so it's good to see all the training I did back in Tucson over winter is paying off." PhotographyImages by Mark Gunter/Cyclingnews/www.pbase.com/gunterphotograph
