9th Telekom Malaysia Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.2Malaysia, February 6-15, 2004Home Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 3 - February 8: Tapah - Raub, 171.2 km24 year-old Lancaster pulls off 150 kilometre breakawayColombia Selle-Italia's Freddy Gonzalez becomes new race leaderBy Anthony Tan in Raub On a stinking hot day in Malaysia, Australian teams pursuit world champion Brett Lancaster kept his cool, staging a successful 150 kilometre breakaway and finishing solo to take the first stage race victory in his short pro career. Although intended as "a bit of a joke" as Lancaster phrased it afterwards, fellow countryman and former iTeamnova team-mate Scott Guyton (Wismilak) discussed the idea of going for the early break at the stage start in Tapah this morning: "Yeah, Scott and I were old team-mates two years ago, and I sort of said as a bit of a joke to go off the front, but I knew Scott was a strong rider," said Lancaster to Cyclingnews. "We were working really strong, and they wasn't much happening behind. I knew we needed a big gap before the hill, and I have to give Scott a lot of credit for doing almost the first half of the climb on the front. I don't think he had the legs, but he buried himself to put me in the lead," added the gracious winner. At the finish in Raub, Lancaster's maximum lead of ten minutes-plus had been slashed to a mere 33 seconds. But the boy from Shepparton, Victoria, couldn't have cared less: the beach-blonde Aussie zipped up his jersey, gradually raised his arms aloft with his head tilted skywards, and acknowledged the frenzied crowd of onlookers with a gleaming smile, finishing in the best way possible. On the tricky descent following the climb to Frasers Gap, overnight leader Marlon Perez (Colombia Selle-Italia) took a tumble on an off-camber corner, and although managing to return to his bike largely unhurt, Perez was unable to return to the first chasing group. Finishing 1'57 down on Lancaster and 1'22 down on team-mate Freddy Gonzalez, who finished fourth on the stage, Gonzalez is now the new leader of the Tour de Langkawi, with a 27 second advantage over South African Ryan Cox (Barloworld) and team-mate Perez. "We were descending very very fast and we (Relax Bodysol rider Hector Guerra Garcia) got away, but I didn't have any idea what was happening behind until I got caught by the next group," explained Perez to Cyclingnews. It was only then that one of my team-mates told me Marlon had crashed, so I just had to keep going. Asked if he and Perez's roles in the team are now reversed, Gonzalez said that his team will wait until Tuesday's time trial (Stage 5) before finalising their race plan. "With three riders in the first four [overall], we'll basically wait to after the time trial to see what the situation [in the team] will be, and we'll more or less take things from there," he said. "At the moment, the team is riding very well. Things didn't really go to plan today, which obviously changed the situation, but our team is in a strong position overall for the rest of the week." How it unfoldedThe 70 kilometre transfer from the 1471 metre summit of Tanah Rata, way up in the Cameron Highlands, where the riders and media stayed last night, down to sea level to the start in Tapah, could have made a story in itself: Formaggi Pinzolo Fiave and Bert Story-Piels' spares vans both required wheel changes half-way down the mountain, and with the smell of worn brake pads permeating the air, it appeared the race start was going to be a little later than expected. But with all credit to the race organisers, who seemed to have brought everything bar the kitchen sink, all 131 riders made it on time for the midday start. With temperatures in the mid 30s and humidity hovering at 95 per cent, many riders unaccustomed to the first real Malaysian weather since the race began three days ago were hibernating in their comfort of their air-conditioned team cars until the very last minute. Cyclingnews diarist John Lieswyn was just one of them. The hot Malay weather unleashed a few Hot Rods with aggressive racing right from the get-go, but with all three intermediate sprints packed into the first 73 kilometres, the sprinters' teams of Panaria-Margres and Health Net were keeping it together for their men Graeme Brown and Gord Fraser, and any breaks were annulled faster than a marriage with Jennifer Lopez. However, no-one save two riders knew of what was about to unfold. Brett Lancaster (Ceramiche Panaria-Margres) and Scott Guyton (Wismilak) rode off the front of the peloton in a premeditated, seemingly crazy move at km 25, and less than half an hour later at km 60, the Aussie duo's lead was a tad over five minutes. With the peloton slow to react and the former iTeamNova team-mates swapping off like clockwork, the pairing continued to build on their advantage right until the base of the climb of Frasers Gap (km 115.5), their lead now a massive 9'17. Once on the climb, many pundits expected the lanky Guyton, a recent winner of the Tour of Southland in New Zealand, to ride away from Lancaster, a member of the world record-breaking teams pursuit quartet last year in Stuttgart - but quite the opposite happened, in fact. Sensing a lull in their pace-setting, the 24 year-old Lancaster left Guyton in his wake before the halfway mark on the climb, and treated the remaining 53 kilometres to the finish in Raub as if his life depended on winning. "We got a time check up the climb and the bunch had pulled another couple of minutes out of us, so I said to him [Guyton]: 'I'm going to have to go mate' - and I just took off," said Lancaster to Cyclingnews. Meanwhile back in the peloton, Colombia Selle-Italia's Freddy Gonzalez and Hector Guerra Garcia (Relax Bodysol) had crested the 20.8 kilometre climb of Frasers Gap a handful of seconds clear of a select group of 16 riders, which included Gonzalez's team-mate and yellow jersey Marlon Perez, the overnight leader crashing out soon afterwards on the treacherous, rain-slicked descent. By the time Little Freddy knew the race leader was in trouble however, it was too late: he and Guerra Garcia were 20 kilometres from home, and the duo had merged with the chase group being driven by the Palmans-Collstrop trio of Gert Vanderaerden, Michel Van Haecke and Kurt Van De Wouwer. After Lancaster crossed the line triumphant to clock up the first win of his pro career, cycling veteran Gordon Fraser came storming across the line 33 seconds later, outsprinting Gert Vanderaerden (Mr Bookmaker-Palmans-Collstrop) for second place. The 16 others in the initial chase group of 18 arrived between two and sixteen seconds behind the Canadian fast-man, who now leads the points classification. "Once Scott and Brett were up the road, I knew I could take a couple more points in the sprint bonuses and then see how I went on the climb," said Fraser to Cyclingnews. "I know from 2000, I crested [the climb] OK and was third on the stage with two other guys away, so it was kind of like deja-vu for me. "I'm very happy to be in the points jersey, and hopefully with the flat stages ahead, I can go for the stage win because I have a bit of a lead in the points [classification], which is the other objective. But I think the first thing for me now is to take this points jersey all the way to the end (looks across to Graeme Brown sitting on the fence, with a grin on his face)... but that's if Graeme doesn't give me a hard time!"
