Saving my bullets

Port Dickson, Stage 8 start, February 13, 2004

Yesterday, on the road to Melaka, I tried to bridge across to that first break of seven. I wasn't intending to take anyone with me or anything, and I thought perhaps they would let me go, but there was no chance. We don't have radios or anything, so I didn't even know my team-mate Peter Wedge was in the break. But I knew the breakaway had a chance to go.

The team plan today is to cover all the moves - we're not discounting a breakway going again. When people are tired, when it gets this hot, people don't want to race hard. We just got to keep on being vigilant, y'know.

However, it's likely today is going to be another day for the sprinters. Personally, I don't want to take any risks; if I'm at the front at the end trying to lead out Charles [Dionne], number one, I don't have the experience to do it properly, and number two, it takes bullets of your gun for tomorrow - so it's not the smartest thing to do.

My legs are still good, but I've certainly been feeling the efforts. I think they'll be fine tomorrow - let's just wait and see...

See you guys,
rg

Editor's note: Roland finished in 92nd place today, the same time as winner Luciano Pagliarini. He is currently placed 15th on the overall classification, 2'49 behind overall leader Marlon Perez.
