Sea Otter Classic - 2.5/2.9.2Monterey, California, USA, April 15-17, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - April 16: Laguna Seca Circuit Race, 60/38 miles (M/W)Lyne Bessette (Quark) and Trent Klasna (Sierra Nevada) won their respective events in the circuit race today. Bessette's win moved her into the lead overall by only two seconds from Tina Pic. Klasna will also take the lead in the tour going into the final road stage tomorrow. The women's race was fairly conservative with the race distance increased this year from the normal 13 laps to 17. The Quark team set high tempo leading into most of the climbs, which strung the bunch out a little and caused a solid rate of attrition, but it was Rebecca Broeder (Wells Fargo), soloing away mid way through the race, who made the most convincing move of the day. She stayed out there for over two laps before getting caught. Mari Holden (T-Mobile) also put in a few hard efforts leading into the climb, but it all stayed together until the final climb when Christine Thorburn (Webcor) attacked hard. Tina Pic (Genesis Scuba) and Kristin Armstrong (T-Mobile) were quick to grab her wheel, whilst Bessette left a gap and then built up enough speed to pass the front three so quickly that none of them could go with her. Bessette held her lead until the finish line, winning the race by only four seconds from the chasing trio. With the 10-second time bonus, Bessette moved herself into the lead on GC. Taking the sprint for second place was Pic, with Thorburn coming in third. Bessette was very happy with her win when Cyclingnews caught up with her after the race. "I had a little gap and it was perfect. I could set up my speed." Keen to keep the lead in tomorrow's race Bessette says "she'll do anything. I'm feeling good and my head is good. I really love the team this year. Its like we are sisters." Yesterday's winner, Armstrong, said it was all in the timing today, with Bessette making the perfect move. "When Christine attacked, I hopped on her wheel and I was trying to recover when Lyne went," she siad. "It was hard out there today. I just didn't know the right time to go," explained Armstrong. Pic seconded the fact that Bessette's move was perfect timing. "I got on Lyne's wheel, but by that time I was blown and I ended up in the second group," she explained. Pic did go home with the sprinters jersey however, and mentioned that the climb just didn't seem as steep as is felt in the past, which is testament to her great form this season. In the men's race and early break of eight riders stayed away until the finish. In the break were Trent Klasna and Eric Wohlberg from Sierra Nevada, Jason Lokkesmoe and Michael Jones (Health Net), Dominique Perras and Corey Lange (Canadian National Team), Charles Dionne (Webcor), Davide Frattini (Monex) and Daniel Ramsey (Seasilver). The break stretched out the time gap to over 1'30" and with three laps to go Chris Horner (Webcor) made an attempt to bring it back but the horsepower up front was too strong for him. The break stayed away and Klasna and Jones got away on the final lap and headed for a two up sprint on the line. Klasna, with his experience, was able to take the stage from Jones, with his teammate; Wohlberg, winning the sprint to take third place. Klasna was pleased after the race, commenting on the way his team came together. "My team was phenomenal. It was a very tough race and I was worried because it all began to fall apart with three laps to go. I pulled too many people around for too long and with one lap to go I was trying to set up Wohlberg, but I ended up getting off with the Mike Jones." Klasna added, "On the last lap I wanted to make sure he worked on the way into the finish and I knew it was all about whoever jumped first. I went with 180m to go and that was it. I think today proved that our team is coming around." Jones was happy with his placing and credited Klasna's experience and tactical prowess. "Trent's been racing for years so I knew somehow I'd be on the front leading into the sprint.," he said. "I also don't have a good jump." PhotographyImages by Colin Meagher
