2003 Road World Championships - CM
Hamilton, Canada, October 7-12, 2003
Day 4 - October 10: Junior Women Road Race
Last years junior women's road race was dominated by the Dutch team, who went on the attack early and also had a good lead out ready for the eventual bunch sprint. Suzanne de Goede won the sprint earning herself the title of World champion whilst Claudia Stumpf (Germany) and Monica Stoller (Sweden) took second and third place respectively.
The difference between the junior women's road race and all other events is that most of these young women have not really had the chance to race against each other in the lead up to the event. Unless they are back to the World Championships for the second year running, their experience is limited to racing against their compatriots in their homelands. Last year the Dutch team showed their dominance and their ability to race well as a team. This year, on a more challenging course, the climbers will come out of the woodwork.
Out of the top ten placers last year, only Audrey Lemieux is back. She is two time Canadian Junior National champion this year (in the time trial and the road race) and will be joined by her teammates Mylene Laliberte, Emilie Roy, Emily Sandwith and Anna Tratnyek to perform in front of a home crowd. The Dutch are back with a strong team as are the Germans. The Australians have Kate Nichols, Candice Sullivan and Stephanie Williams who raced in GP Canada last week to prepare for the event, and Italy and the Czech Republic arrive with their National Champions Laura Bozzolo and Petra Bublova. Bublova featured as one of the aggressive riders in last year's race and will be back hoping for a better finish.
The junior women will race their road race on Friday morning and will complete six laps of the same 12.4km circuit that all other categories race on, for a total of 74.4km.
