Vic Roads Herald Sun Tour 2003 - 2.3Australia, October 16-26, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - October 19: Lorne To Torquay, 110.4 kmsDream win puts Drew in yellow for homecoming stageBy Rod Morris in Torquay Wishes can come true, just ask Victorian cyclist Jamie Drew (Jayco). Drew (30) today won the fourth stage of the $120,000 VicRoads Herald Sun Tour and moved back into the prized leader's jersey, which he will carry into his home town of Warrnambool tomorrow. "I started the tour with the ambition of being the leader when the race went through Warrnambool, so I'm really happy and proud that that is now going to happen," Drew said. Riding for the strong Jayco team, Drew was in lightning form yesterday when the tour entourage travelled from Lorne to Torquay - via Anglesea - fighting strong winds. Drew missed the early breakaway group of six riders, but was in the chase-down pack which caught them at around the 70 km mark of the 110 km stage. From there it was a game of cat and mouse with riders watching every move made by their challengers. Drew made his winning move at the final 5 km mark, forcing riders to either go with him or be left behind. New Zealander Greg Henderson (Carlton Midstrength) and Victorian pre-tour favourite Matt Wilson (Malaysia Airlines) took up the challenge, but couldn't mow down the powerful Drew. "Our team put in a great performance today," Drew explained. "We had the yellow jersey in our sights all day and out the front we had Macca [David McKenzie], Allan Iacuone and myself, so all in all, we should be pretty pleased with our efforts." For Drew, it was his third stage win in the Herald Sun Tour, following a Bendigo victory in 1997 and a Geelong success in 2000. More importantly it moved Drew back into yellow for only the second time, the first being on day two of this current HST. "I desperately wanted to have the leader's jersey on the day we went into Warrnambool, my home town," he said. "I had the leader on the second day but then lost it at Geelong in the third stage, so to have it back is good and I am really looking forward to the Warrnambool stage." The tour will start in Camperdown tomorrow morning (Monday, October 20) at 10.30 a.m. and will travel 151.6 km en route to Warrnambool. Drew started yesterday's stage in second place, 10 seconds in arrears of Italian Ivan Fanelli (Europcar Pelaco). He now leads by 36 seconds to Kjell Carlstrom (Europcar - Pelaco), while Fanelli dropped to 12th and 2.20 minutes behind, which would seemingly end his chances of winning the tour. How it unfoldedStage 4 had a little bit of everything, early rain, wind, sunshine, wind, grey clouds, more wind and even some more wind just for good measure. The early breakaway group, which included the opening stage tour leader, Simon Gerrans (Malaysia), Tasmanian Sean Sullivan (Barloworld), Iacuone, American Michael Sayers (Ballarat*eureka!), Queenslander Cameron Jennings (Caravello) and English rider Kristian House (Emu Spirit-Apsco), deserve all the accolades passed their way. They made the stage a memorable one, riding hard for every kilometre they had on the road. At one point, they enjoyed an advantage of more than a minute before the peloton sensed danger and issued orders for a chase-down pack, which then had to work overtime to reel in the leaders. The gap was closed down at around the 70 km mark, shortly before the leaders hit Anglesea. The Jayco team was one of the hardest working units on the road, but mention too should be made of Malaysia Airlines, Carlton Midstrength and Europcar - Pelaco teams. All had riders enjoying a day on the front of the field and were able to dictate how the race panned out, instead of being answerable to others. As the tempo lifted heading into Torquay, Drew stepped on the gas and had seven seconds to spare as he crossed the finish line ahead of Henderson and Wilson. "I knew the course around here pretty well, so I knew when to attack and what was ahead," Drew said. "I gave it everything I had and I'm feeling pretty good about the rest of the week." The Italian, Ivan Fanelli lost his grip on the yellow tour top, but he still has the prestigious polka dot design, which signifies leader of the King of the Mountain Championship, while Finland's Kjell Carlstrom (Europcar - Pelaco) maintained his hold on the Sprint Championship. The 2003 HST has only traveled 337 km of its planned 1195 km and the race is still wide open. Predicting a winner is fraught with danger, highlighted by the fact there have already changes in yellow on every stage. The tour moves to Port Fairy on Tuesday with the first of the dual stage days. A 30 km criterium will be held around the Port Fairy sports complex in the morning before a 99 km road race from Port Fairy to Hamilton in the afternoon.
