Vic Roads Herald Sun Tour 2003 - 2.3Australia, October 16-26, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - October 17: Portarlington, 117 kmsClarke takes stage; Drew takes yellowBy Rod Morris
A steadily growing reputation was enhanced even further for Victorian cyclist Hilton Clarke in today's second stage of the 2003 VicRoads Herald Sun Tour. Clarke (24), riding for the South African based team of Barloworld, won a tough 117 km stage in and around Portarlington near Geelong on the picturesque Bellarine Peninsula. It was Clarke's third win in the prestigious Herald Sun Tour, which this year is celebrating its 52nd birthday. "I won two stages last year and its nice to start with another stage win so early into this event," Clarke said. "I'm disappointed not to have won the Melbourne criterium, particularly as that's my home city, but winning this is still pretty good." Clarke is a renowned sprinter and in a fantastic sprint to the line, outgunned classy Belgium Bart Heirewegh (Carlton Midstrength) and 38-year-old Canadian veteran Eric Wohlberg (Active For Life). But while Clarke was revelling in his success, the yellow jersey, signifying the tour leader, swapped hands. Young Victorian, Simon Gerrans (Malaysia Airlines) started the stage holding a one second advantage over American Michael Sayers (Ballarat*eureka!) and a further three seconds to Uruguayan rider Hector Morales (Active For Life). Gerrans however appeared content to sit back in the main bunch for the majority of the Portarlington Kermesse and handballed the yellow top to fellow Victorian Jamie Drew (Jayco). Drew (30) was part of a very active six man breakaway group over the closing laps and although he didn't feature in the final sprint, was content with his day's work. "I wasn't overly concerned with winning the stage, as I was concentrating on moving into yellow," Drew said. "I knew the course pretty well and knew what to expect as I have ridden a few times here before." Those "few times" included the 2000 Australian Open Road Championships when Drew won the title. He was actually second over the line to Englishman Jeremy Hunt, but won the national championship as the first Australian. "I would now be nice to wear the yellow top into Warrnambool on Monday, as that is my home town," Drew declared. His run of close calls recently has included second in last Saturday's Melbourne to Warrnambool and a third in the opening stage of this tour. "I'm a little second of all the minor placings, so its nice to lead," he added. Drew now leads the tour by just four seconds from Ivan Fanelli (Europcar - Pelaco) and a handy break of a further 11 seconds to Hilton Clarke. Gerrans fell to seventh place and is one of four riders 27 seconds from the leader. Frantic finish
At the bell lap, signaling just 11.7 km of the Portarlington circuit remaining, Clarke, Heirewegh, Drew, Wohlberg, South Australian Steve Cunningham (Rio Coffee) and Italian climber Ivan Fanelli (Europcar-Pelaco) held a break of around 40 seconds. Fifteen minutes later that lead had been slashed to a blink of an eye in a frantic finish. Cunningham was rewarded with the lead in the Savings and Loan Most Aggressive Rider and the Herald Sun Australian Based Rider categories, while Fanelli is the opening leader in the Gatorade King of the Mountains Championship. The stage had a little bit of everything, although for South African, James Perry (Barloworld), it was a day to forget. Perry broke a spoke in his rear wheel just 5 km into the stage and by the time his team mechanics had fixed the problem, the peloton was well and truly up the road. Compounding Perry's problems next was the fact, he missed a turn-off, adding a few more kms to his journey. In the end it was a sad and lonely day out the back of the main bunch.
American Joseph Papp (Echuca-Moama) started the day in last place and was required painkillers to finish the stage. Don't expect him to be at the finish in Ballarat on October 26. Papp's Echuca-Moama teammates Alejandro Acton and Mateo Sasso also had lonely days on the road and will find it difficult to maintain pace in the days to come. Another sad tale from the day came South Australian Russell Van Hout (Emu Spirit - Apsco) who was penalised two minutes for motor pacing. He was also hit with a monetary fine, as was his team's manager. The time penalty has almost certainly ruined any chance Van Hout had of a high General Classification placing. The Herald Sun Tour will race to Warrnambool from Camperdown on Monday, but for Drew to still be in yellow, he must watch all moves in Saturday's 77 km kermesse on Geelong's Eastern Beach, starting at 1.30 p.m. and Sunday's 110 km road stage from Lorne to Torquay, starting at midday.
