Carlstrom wins from big break

Finland's Kjell Carlstrom had been knocking on the door all week for a stage win and finally cracked it in Stage 7, a 97 km out and back road race in Bargara, just 12 km east of Bundaberg on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Carlstrom was part of a hugely talented group of 16 riders that kicked away from the main bunch extremely early in the race. So dominant was the breakaway group, they registered a winning margin of 26.05 minutes over the lethargic peloton that limped across the line.
The big casualty of the stage was South African Tiaan Kannemeyer, who slipped from third to 17th who missed the vital break and effectively ended any chance he may of had of victory. The 16-man breakaway rode hard right throughout the stage and apart from Kannemeyer, all of the challengers in General Classification were well placed. Tour leader David McKenzie kept his position safely guarded and ended the stage 15 seconds clear of his nearest rival, Eric Wohlberg (Maryborough City - Isis Shire). From there it was only a matter of protecting his lead and watching every Wohlberg move.
