Jayco Tour of Queensland - 2.5Australia, November 3-8, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - November 5: Woodgate - Childers, 107.4 kmStage win for Kannemeyer as Wohlberg moves into leadBy Rod Morris in Childers Ace South African Tiaan Kannemeyer continued his love affair with Australian road cycling when he won today's third stage of the $60,000 Jayco Tour of Queensland. Kannemeyer (24) outsprinted tour veteran Eric Wohlberg of Canada in a duel to the finish line in the landmark township of Childers, the scene of a horrific backpackers' hostel fire in 1995. Starting 107 km away in Woodgate on the Pacific Coast, the field of 60 tour riders was treated to a great, but physically demanding stage. The race started with 10 laps of a 3.5 km street circuit in Woodgate with picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean before the riders hit the road towards Childers, winding their way through beautiful canefields. There were five intermediate sprints in Woodgate, allowing the sprinters to pick up valuable bonus seconds and Sweden's Jonas Ljungblad (Bundaberg Sugar) was a key player, winning three and placing third in another. On the last of the five intermediate sprints, a group of six, including Kannemeyer (Barloworld), Wohlberg (Maryborough City - Isis Shire), Ljungblad, Jamie Drew (Jayco), Kristian House (Miriam Vale - Kolan - Perry Shires) and Jorge Libonatti (Caravello) had established an extremely handy break of 2.30 minutes, which an hour later had grown to more than six minutes. This breakaway group was a like a mini meeting of the United Nations, with South Africa, Canada, Sweden, Australia, England and Uruguay all represented. House was the best placed rider in General Classification of the six, starting the day in eighth place and 1.27 minutes behind the leader, Bart Heirewegh (Bundaberg Sugar). Once the leaders hit the 20 km mark, it was action stations as Kannemeyer and Wohlberg lifted the tempo and kicked away from their fellow leaders. News filtered through the convoy that the peloton had closed the gap to less than three minutes and were chasing hard. But Kannemeyer and Wohlberg maintained a steady pace and forced Drew, House, Libonatti and Ljungblad into almost submission. The South African and the Canadian stayed together for the final sprint in the main street of Childers, but it was Kannemeyer who found something extra in the last 50 m. "It was a very hard race, made difficult by the cross winds and the heat," Kannemeyer said. "That win will certainly help my standings in the GC list and anything can happen from here." Kannemeyer won his first ever open road race in Australia last year when he was successful in the Bacchus Marsh to Mt Buninyong stage of the 2002 Herald Sun Tour. "Australia has been good to me and I enjoy the racing here," Kannemeyer said. Kannemeyer's win elevated him into third, at 31 seconds behind Wohlberg and he must now be considered a strong chance for overall honours. Wohlberg, settling for second in the stage, reluctantly moved into the outright lead in this inaugural Tour of Queensland. "It wasn't in my or the team's plan to take back the leader's jersey today, as it will be harder defending it than chasing it," Wohlberg said. The Canadian had the lead on the opening day after winning the Bundaberg Criterium and is the oldest rider in the tour. "Its the last race of the season for me and I want to finish it off in good style," he said. "We had a very good little group out there today and they all rode well together, particularly Kristian House, who really was the leader of the pack, he was the one that was driving the train." Unfortunately for House, Libonatti, Ljungblad and Drew, a missed corner 16 km short of the finish proved costly. Whilst attempting to chase down Kannemeyer and Wohlberg, the four were steered the wrong way at Cordalba and lost about 40 seconds before regaining the correct tour route. For House, the error could well have cost him the outright lead and his team manager, Michele Primaro was tonight considering what action they can take to rectify the matter. House was disappointed but philosophical about the problem. "That's racing, it happens in a lot of races, but I'd like to see how it has affected me in General Classification and make a decision on what course of action we can take from there," he said. House did improve his rating to fifth, at 1.29 minutes behind the new leader, Wohlberg, but the 40 seconds lost could prove extremely crucial come Saturday afternoon when the tour finishes in Bundaberg. By the time the four had got back on the course proper, five more chasing riders from the peloton had caught them, which produced a group of nine sprinting for third spot. Victorian David McKenzie (Jayco) did his tour chances no harm with a bunch finish and remains in second, just 18 seconds behind Wohlberg. American Michael Sayers (Bundaberg City - Burnett Shire) improved from sixth to fourth and is quietly going about his business before waiting to strike. Overnight leader Bart Heirewegh (Bundaberg Sugar) limped home in the main bunch and slipped down the GC list to sixth and is 1.38 minutes behind the Canadian. "No real damage today, the race is not yet halfway," Heirewegh said. The Tour of Queensland will continue tomorrow with a dual stage in Maryborough, south of Bundaberg. A short, but no doubt hectic criterium will herald in the day, starting at 11 a.m. and will be followed by an 85.7 km out and back circuit in the afternoon, starting at 2 p.m. These two stages will play a big part in deciding who will eventually be the inaugural winner of the Tour of Queensland.
