61st Paris-Nice - 2.HCFrance, March 9-16, 2003Main page Results Live report Previous stage Stage 7 - March 16: Nice - Nice, 160 kmVinokourov strong until the endBernabeu wins final stage in Milaneza coupBy Jeff Jones Kazakh rider Alexandre Vinokourov has ended an emotional week in the 61st Paris-Nice by winning the race for the second year in a row. The Telekom rider, who lost his close friend and compatriot Andrei Kivilev to a fatal crash last Wednesday, beat Mikel Zarrabeitia (ONCE) and Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) for the overall honours. He dedicated the win to Kivilev, who he said gave him "double strength" to take the jersey in stage 5 on Mont Faron. "I had double motivation after the death of Kivilev," he said. "I still cannot believe it that he is not here. Above all, I dedicate this win to him. Because I won this race last year, I prepared especially for it again. I was also so motivated that I gave the maximum for Kivilev. Vinokourov isn't sure yet what his next race will be. "I don't know, but normally it will be Milan-San Remo. I have to relax and come to terms with this very emotional week." The stage was won by Spanish rider David Bernabeu (Milaneza), who escaped on the last climb of the Col de Châteauneuf with 50 km to go in the company of teammate Fabian Jeker and Kelme's Ivan Parra. The three gained a maximum lead of 1'20 over the small peloton, which was reduced to just 11 seconds by the finish. Bernabeu attacked with less than 1 km to go to take the stage win, with Jeker finishing second in front of Parra. How it unfoldedThe final stage of Paris-Nice was no showy criterium this year - the race was hard right up until the final turn onto Nice's famous Promenade des Anglais. Leaving Nice at 11:25am, the 118 riders left in the race had to complete two circuits of a course that included the Cat. 1 Col d'Eze and Cat. 2 Col de Châteauneuf, and a finale circuit with just the Col d'Eze. The stage was held in brilliant sunshine again, as has been the case for much of the past week. The pace was quite high from the start, with many riders not surviving the first ascension of the Col d'Eze. The mountain points at the top were taken by CSC's Tyler Hamilton, who claimed the jersey after his long solo effort in yesterday's stage 6. He was followed by Pedro Cardoso and Rui Sousa (Milaneza) over the top. On the descent, Christophe Oriol (Jean Delatour) and Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel) attacked and managed to hold the peloton at bay, being caught by Isaac Galvez (Kelme) at the bottom. The leading three increased their gap to 1'50 at Contes (km 35) and maintained it on the Col de Châteauneuf, with the peloton not eager to chase them down yet. They came back into Nice for the first time with an advantage of 3'00 to the peloton, and prepared to attack the Col d'Eze a second time. Their advantage fell rapidly on the climb to just 1'05 at the top, but the peloton still wasn't serious about chasing them and the trio built it back up again to 2'30 by La Trinité (km 92). Finally the ONCE team turned up the gas and brought Oriol, Etxebarria and Galvez back to within striking distance at the foot of the Col de Châteauneuf (km 107), and the break was finished. As Galvez was falling back through the peloton, his teammate Ivan Parra attacked on the climb, quickly getting a gap that only David Bernabeu and Fabian Jeker (Milaneza-MSS) could close. Once together, the three rode hard to gain 12 seconds at the top of the climb, with the peloton now down to less than 40 men. On the descent of the Châteauneuf the leaders increased their gap to 20 seconds, then to 1'20 by the time they hit Nice for the end of the second lap. The small peloton was being led by Cofidis' Cedric Vasseur and Telekom's Thorsten Hiekmann, who were riding a solid tempo in order to prevent Bernabeu from getting too far in front. The Milaneza rider was only 1'51 down on Vinokourov on GC, and there were not many seconds to play with. Bernabeu, Jeker and Parra hit the final climb of the Col d'Eze with 1'15 to the peloton, which fragmented further on the climb into an 17 rider group. The efforts of Sylvain Chavanel (Brioches la Boulangere) were primarily responsible for this, as the young Frenchman launched attack after attack to bring the break back to 30 seconds at the top. Euskaltel's Gorka Gonzalez and Samuel Sanchez were also doing their bit at the front, while Vinokourov was staying calm and marking every move that counted. The leaders hit the summit with half a minute on the chasers and 16 km of descending to go until they reached the finish. They successfully held their gap on the downhill, with the two Milaneza riders giving it everything to ensure they stayed away. The peloton broke and reformed on the descent, and there were still 17 riders left with 4 km to go. As they sped along the Promenade des Anglais for the final time in this year's Paris-Nice, David Bernabeu made his winning move with around 700 metres to go. Parra couldn't follow him, and the Spaniard crossed the line in triumph, with his teammate Jeker also celebrating as he finished second. A handful of seconds behind, Laurent Brochard (Ag2r) crossed for fourth place after a late attack, securing the green points jersey in the process. Coming through last in the front group was Alexandre Vinokourov, who claimed his second successive Paris-Nice with a very emotionally driven ride. Never did he think that victory would be this painful. PhotographyImage by Yuzuru Sunada
