61st Paris-Nice - 2.HCFrance, March 9-16, 2003Main page Photography Results Live report Next stage Prologue - March 9: Issy-les-Moulineaux, 4.8 kmNico Mattan "Ultra" good to win Paris-Nice prologueBy Tim Maloney, European editor On a bright, windy day in front of modest crowds gathered in the Paris suburbs, the 2003 edition of the "Race To The Sun" kicked off with a solid win by Nico Mattan (Cofidis). Mattan is well known for his vocal fan club, Nico's "Ultras", a bunch of rowdy young dudes from Kortrijk, Belgium. And after Mattan's win today in the Paris-Nice Prologue, his Ultras can certainly celebrate this important win for the 31 year old classics specialist. 4th in last year's P-N prologue and winner in 2001, Mattan came prepared. "I've really been training for this prologue," explained Mattan. "Last week, I did a lot of intense training on my time trial bike behind the derny." Mattan's hard work paid off, as his winning time was almost 50 km/h, just ahead of a surprisingly fit Tyler Hamilton.
Riding his first race of the 2003 season for CSC, Hamilton told Cyclingnews reporter Chris Henry after his ride that "I've been training hard. I've had six and a half months out of racing, so I've had to train hard. Overall I feel pretty good...but training is training, and racing is racing." His training showed in today's 4.8km test. The Man From Marblehead may not have the smoothest style in the peloton, but his raw power and skill against the watch were evident today, making him one of the favourites for GC victory next Sunday in Nice. Almost pulling a major upset was Mattan's Cofidis teammate Phillipe Gaumont, who ended up in 3rd. The rangy, just-turned-30 Gaumont has been all but invisible since he broke his leg badly in a crash on the cobbles in the Arenberg Forest during Paris-Roubaix, but his short distance TT skills evidently remain intact.
Clad in his Australian National Champions strip, Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) had an excellent ride today for 4th, just ahead of a pair of Fassa Bortolo riders, 22 year old time trial phenom Fabian Cancellara and 2000 Paris-Nice winner Dario Frigo, fresh from his victory in Spain at Vuelta Valenciana. "I wasn't feeling great today", said Frigo after his 6th place finish, 6" behind Mattan. "I didn't take any risks and anyway, 6th place is pretty good. We're just at the beginning of the race." Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) also had a decent ride for 11th today, in a time of 5'55. "The hill was quite hard, especially on the top part because it was into a headwind," the Norwegian told Cyclingnews. "So you couldn't go too hard on the bottom, you had to keep some energy for the top. I just did my best, and 11th is not too bad." Last year's Paris-Nice winner Alexander Vinokourov was 10th, 8" behind the Cofidis winner. With just the prologue behind them, the GC battle looks interesting at this year's tough edition of Paris-Nice. Hamilton, Frigo and Vinokourov look to be the likely protagonists, with Laurent Brochard (AG2r) and upcoming French riders like Sandy Casar (FDJ.Com) and Sylvain Chavanel (Le Boulangère) looking to make their mark. Tomorrow, the 158 riders in Paris-Nice transfer south to start Monday's 191km Stage 1 from Auxerre to Paray-le-Monial. It's a flat parcours south through Burgundy and with 2 intermediate time bonus sprints and the final sprint bonus, look for Fassa Bortolo man Alessandro Petacchi, 33rd in today's prologue and just 14" out of the leader's jersey to try and wrest the leadership from Mattan on Monday.
