McGee gets his day, Casagrande cracks

Bradley McGee won today's 33 kilometre individual time trial, offering FDJeux.com its second stage win of the Tour de Suisse, and earning a sweet revenge for his narrow defeat in the opening prologue. McGee mastered the technical and challenging course, storming to a time of 42 minutes and 20 seconds, ahead of fellow time trial specialists Uwe Peschel (Gerolsteiner) and Jan Ullrich (Team Bianchi). The general classification swung back in favour of Alexandre Vinokourov, who handily beat yellow jersey Francesco Casagrande (Lampre) to regain the overall lead with just one stage remaining.
Although the time trial profile was ostensibly flat, the course was anything but easy. Tight corners, narrow roads, and undulating terrain tested riders to their limits, and those who didn't have the power to maintain their speed through constant changes of the gears were doomed to defeat. McGee set the mark to beat, starting well ahead of the big race GC favourites. Diving through the final corner and stomping on the pedals out of the saddle for the remaining metres, the Australian appeared visibly stronger than most, and was able to watch the challengers come and go, eventually earning the stage victory he deserved.
Casagrande, on the other hand, was simply unable to maintain the speed and power necessary to defend his race lead, and in just 12km of racing he had lost virtually all of his lead over Vinokourov, who finished a solid 5th place on the stage and now leads the Italian by 15" on the eve of the final stage, which should pose no difficulties for the Telekom team. Slumped over the team car after his ride, Casagrande's disappointment was clear, and he knew he had been beaten once again for a stage race victory after a poor solo performance against the clock.

"I went out quickly right away to take time from Cassagrande, and to strike a blow to the morale of Casagrande," Vinokourov explained after his ride. "After a bit the time gaps were the same, and I knew it would be a battle of wills. I gave it everything I could, and the last kilometres were really difficult, but I think I won mentally and I did what I could to get the jersey back."
All eyes were also on Jan Ullrich, who after steady improvement in the mountains was ready to show himself as a rider in form and perhaps challenge for the stage win. Ullrich didn't win, but his third place, less than a minute behind McGee, was nonetheless encouraging. The big German's powerful style was evident, and his ride was enough to move him to 8th place in the overall classification. Vinokourov's Telekom teammate Giuseppe Guerini also had a fine day, and moved up to third place overall as Telekom placed three riders (Bobby Julich was 7th) in the top ten on the stage.
