Pereiro gives Phonak a breakUllrich emergesBy Chris Henry With defending champion Alex Zülle effectively out of the general classification hunt, Spaniard Oscar Pereiro offered Phonak a sweet consolation prize today, taking a relatively short but mountainous stage 6 based around Silvaplana. Pereiro escaped alone on the seemingly interminable final climb of the day, overhauling earlier breakaways and imposing a powerful climbing rhythm which saw him stay clear of the race favourites by 1'14" by the end of the downhill finish. Along with winning the stage, Pereiro also climbed into the top ten overall, just 2'05" behind Lampre leader Francesco Casagrande, who comfortably maintained his 37" advantage over Telekom's Alexandre Vinokourov. Pereiro is a solid performer in the individual time trial, and can realistically hope to continue his climb up the classification with a good ride in Tuesday's time trial in Gossau. "After tomorrow things could start to look good for me," Pereiro said of his overall chances. Casagrande, on the other hand, will have to do an excellent race against the clock to fend of Vinokourov, who is a better time trial rider. "Against Vinokourov it will be tough, but I'll give it my all," Casagrande commented. How it unfoldedWith three major climbs over a short parcours of 134 kilometres, today's stage was another day suited to breakaways and small groups testing their luck against the GC leaders, who would surely watch each other until the final portions of the last climb. First up on the day was an ascent of the short side of the Albula Pass, reversing the direction of the previous day's trip up the same climb. Bradley McGee (FDJeux.com), who just one day prior saw his third place overall slip from his grasp in the high mountains, helped get things rolling by taking part in an early break which stayed clear for much of the stage and evolved into a move of seven riders: Oscar Camenzind (Phonak), Salvatore Commesso (Saeco), Aitor Garmendia (Bianchi), Seweryn Kohut (CCC Polsat), Steffen Wesemann (Telekom), Marcus Zberg (Gerolsteiner), and McGee. The break never managed much more than a minute over the main field, and eventually Zberg decided to go it alone, moving clear and setting a strong tempo up the early slopes of the monstrous Julierpass. Zberg was riding strongly, and stayed clear of the remnants of the break (by this point reduced to just Kohut, Camenzind, and Wesemann), but the climb was too long for the Swiss and eventually his move was overshadowed by a new solo effort from Pereiro, who caught and picked his way through the disbanded breakaway and caught and passed Zberg as the Julierpass unfolded. Pereiro was on a fine day, and fended off a counter attack behind from Quick.Step's ever-aggressive Jorgen Van Goolen. By the top of the climb, which did not offer the dramatic changes in gradient or difficulty required to shape the GC fight, an elite group of just nine riders was left chasing Pereiro: race leader Casagrande, Vinokourov and Giuseppe (Telekom), Kim Kirchen, Tadej Valjavec and Sven Montgomery (Fassa Bortolo), Ondrej Sosenka (CCC-Polsat), Alexandre Moos (Phonak), and Jan Ullrich (Bianchi), who like yesterday was quiet in the early slopes of the final climb, but showed his improving form by steadily riding back into contention when it mattered. Ullrich in fact was also having a strong day, and set the tempo as the chasing group neared the summit of the Julierpass, looking quite comfortable in the saddle. Not only was he eager to set the pace, the German displayed an important flash of extra motivation by attacking in the finale and stealing second place on the stage, three seconds ahead of Kim Kirchen. Monday's stage 7 takes the peloton out of the high mountains with a 231 km roll from Savognin to Oberstaufen, Germany. The stage should be suited to the sprinters, eager to show their faces after several tough days of climbing, and coming just ahead of the crucial stage 8 time trial on Tuesday.
