67th Tour de Suisse- 2.HCSwitzerland, June 16-25, 2003Main page Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 4 - June 20: Visp - Losone, 168 kmVictory from the jaws of defeat for CasarKirchen celebrates too earlyBy Jeff Jones With 10 km to go and a 3'23 lead for breakaway riders Sandy Casar (FDJeux.com) and Filipo Simeoni (Domina Vacanze), it looked as though one of the two would win the fourth stage of the Tour de Suisse. But when Simeoni stopped working with 6 km to go, they squandered their lead and were caught by Kim Kirchen (Fassa Bortolo) with the peloton on his heels with 500m to go. Normally that would have been the end of it, but Casar decided to give it everything to try and win, and on the line caught Kirchen, who was raising his arms in premature victory. Thus Casar won the stage in what finished effectively as a bunch sprint. "I wanted the jersey rather than the stage," said Casar, who needed 2'33 to take over from Vinokourov - a possibility if Simeoni had continued to work. "I didn't know what Simeoni was doing... In the sprint I thought I couldn't get Kirchen back." "With two kilometres to go I was suffering from cramps. I'm lucky Simeoni didn't see that," added the Frenchman, who recorded his second win as a pro. For the reluctant race leader Alexandre Vinokourov (Telekom), it was a fairly easy stage. There were no attacks on the Nufenenpass and he was sheltered all day by his teammates, who rode a bit harder towards the finish to reduce the gap to Casar and Simeoni. How it unfoldedThe heat appears to be taking its toll on this riders in the Tour de Suisse, with temperatures in the mid to high 30's today in the 168 km stage between Visp and Losone. The peloton may have even welcomed the cooler summit of the 2478m Nufenenpass, although its 8.1 percent average grade over 14 kilometres had to be overcome first. After only five kilometres of racing, a group of 27 riders detached itself off the front of the peloton, gaining up to a 45" lead before being caught again. Before it was brought back, Filippo Simeoni (Domina Vacanze) had decided to attack on his own, and he had a 1'10 lead after 21 km. It was then that Sandy Casar (FDJeux.com) set off in pursuit, catching Simeoni after 35 km, while the peloton lagged 6'43 behind the pair. The two leaders co-operated well at first, and increased their gap to 10'05 at 10 km from the foot of the Nufenenpass. On the climb itself they lost some time, as Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step) and Seweryn Kohut (CCC) crossed the top 6'04 behind, with the peloton at 8'59. The descent was fast, and by the foot of it the leaders had 5'39 on the chasing duo, 7'17 on Cancellara, Trampusch, and Celestino, and 9'34 to the peloton. With 38 km to go, the peloton had swallowed up all the intermediate breakaways, leaving Casar and Simeoni out in front with a 6'49 gap. Although Casar was not far behind on GC, Telekom did not seem to be desperate to bring him back, as GC leader Vinokourov has repeatedly said that he is not worried about the overall classification in the Tour de Suisse, preferring to use it as a build up for the Tour. With 14 km to go the gap was still 3'33, and it looked highly probable that Casar and Simeoni would stay away to fight out the stage win. The leader's jersey was not as clear cut, as Casar needed at least 2'20 at the finish to secure it. But with six kilometres to go, Simeoni refused to come through any more, forcing Casar to take the lead, giving the Italian a free ride to the finish. Casar didn't particularly like this, but no matter how slow he rode, Simeoni remained glued to his back wheel. So the once great lead was frittered away in a matter of kilometres, as the peloton wound up for what it thought was a sprint for third. But with 1 km to go, the break was in sight and not moving very fast, and all of a sudden it looked like a bunch sprint would decide the stage. Kim Kirchen (4th on GC) saw the opportunity to take some bonus seconds, and attacked with 500m to go, passing Simeoni and Casar and opening up a 25m gap. Casar hesitated then jumped after Kirchen, and Simeoni couldn't follow him. Kirchen looked to have it won but sat up a good 10m before the line, putting his arms in the air only to see Casar come round him on his right to take the stage win. Stuart O'Grady and Robbie McEwen led the bunch home for third and fourth, right behind them. Tomorrow's fifth stage is another one in the high mountains, containing the San Bernadino (2066m, km 77.6) and Albula (2315m, km 167.9) passes. The last climb comes with 10 km to go before the finish in La Punt, and should certainly suit the climbers and daredevil descenders in the peloton. PhotographyImages by Fotoreporter Sirotti
