8th Tour of South China Sea - 2.5China, December 25, 2003 - January 1, 2004Stages listing Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - December 30: GP Racing Circuit (Zhuhai), 108kmGrishkin cements himself on topBy Gudo Kramer The Moscow City Omnisport team showed that they are the best team by far in the Tour of South China Sea today at Zhuhai during the 6th stage. The team worked professionally towards another sprint victory of Oleg Grishkin, his fourth in this Tour and the fifth stage victory of his team in six stages. Kam Po Wong won six bonus seconds by sprinting to a second place, that may turn out to be very important in the final calculations, as he is the favourite in tomorrow's stage on Coloane Island, finishing up a steep climb. In Zhuhai, Brett Aitken, who was third on GC, had to drop out from the Tour of South China Sea as he has a knee injury (tendonitis). His participation in the Hong Kong Cycle Classic on the 4th of January is also in danger. The stage saw a lot of riders attacking early in the race. Chris Baumann (Sierra Nevada/Marco Polo) opened the ball with an attack from the gun, bringing him a 1 minute lead, after one lap (4.3 km) on the GP Racing Circuit. Soon after he had been caught back, there were many others trying to get away. After a group of 15 looked too dangerous for Grishkin, his team started chasing, but the race leader had to close the final gap by himself. This was the sign for a new group to go. Masahiko Mifune (CMS World Wide Cycling) started the fire and soon the group was ten riders strong. With Li Wei, Zhang Li, Schewe, Gniot, Hlavac, Lazar, Jang Sun Jae, Dovrschik working hard and Minarschki protecting Grishkin, the group looked strong enough and not too dangerous for Grishkin. The maximum gap was 2 minutes 16 and with 7 laps to go, the Russians started up their train. The Russians gained back 30 seconds per lap in the first few laps and 20 seconds per lap after that. They waited to catch back the leaders only in the last corner, pulling the sprint perfectly for Grishkin. Kam Po Wong managed to come beside the fast Russian, but could not pass him. With two stages to go, the difference between the pair is 17 seconds. Grishkin failed only in stage two of this race, the only stage that had some hills. This is where the hopes of the Hong Kong team lie, as the next stage on the 31st of December is a hilly one on Coloane island and ends with a steep two kilometre climb. The fight will be between Kam Po Wong and Oleg Grishkin, Wong probably also needing the bonus seconds to win this tour. A 17 second gap on Grishkin in just two steep kilometres is not very likely.
