8th Tour of South China Sea - 2.5China, December 25, 2003 - January 1, 2004Stages listing Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - December 29: Xiaolan (Zhongshan City), 80 kmGrishkin wins againBy Gudo Kramer The Zhongshang Torch Cup, the fifth stage in the 8th Tour of South China Sea was won by Oleg Grishkin from the Moscow Sports Team. Grishkin, who also won Stage 1 and 4, seems to be the fastest sprinter in the field and is the leader in this race that has been a sprinters' race from the third stage onwards. In the first and second stages there were still breaks, and Grishkin didn't look good in the hilly stage 2 in which he had to hand the leader's jersey over to Kam Po Wong, but with a strong team around him, Grishkin looks unbeatable so far in the flat stages of this race. Most of the riders are looking forward to the stage on the 31st of December, that will finish after 2 km of climbing. In the Zhongshang Torch Cup race today, on a 3.8 km super fast course, the average speed was high (the average speed of 42 in the official results cannot be correct), the field was all strung out for most of the stage. Still some groups managed to stay away for quite a few laps. The longest break was by a three man group: Chris Bradford from CMS Marco Polo amateurs, Yu Tong from the Macau-Beijing selection and Cheng Keng Hsien from Chinese Taipei. The trio got a maximum lead of 1 minute and 40 seconds. When Yuri Yuda (Kazakhstan), Ivy Weifeng (Shanghai) and Felix Rohrbach (Sierra Nevada-Marco Polo) got away and tried to close the gap, the teams of Grishkin and Aitken decided that this was getting too dangerous and started the chase. After they had caught the two little groups, there was a more dangerous group of nine riders, including three riders from Ducla Trencin and also Peter Milostic from Australia Bicisport. With Milostic only 11 seconds from Grishkin in GC and no Australians to help in chase, the Russian sprinter got nervous and started calling more forces to help. The Kazakhstan team also missed the break and the Moscow and Kazakhstan teams got the field to the leading group in the last lap. The sprint was a very close one, as Grishkin started really early and Aitken managed to get next to him, there was no way of passing the Navigators rider from Russia today however, and Aitken lost by half a wheel. Koudentsov took third, in front of Hung Hsu Ying Chieh of Merida Taipei. The crowds watching were huge again and the local organisation showed off with enormous starting and prize ceremonies. There where some extra prizes, won by Chris Bradford (most aggressive rider), Ducla Trencin (most aggressive team) and Han Xiaoyong (best U23). PhotographyImages by Francis Cerny/Nikon Camera
