8th Tour of South China Sea - 2.5China, December 25, 2003 - January 1, 2004Stages listing Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - December 28: LinJiang Road (Zhujiang New City), 110 kmGrishkin reclaims the yellowBy Gudo Kramer Russian champion Oleg Grishkin has reclaimed the lead in the Tour of the South China Sea after winning the fourth stage in Zhujiang New City in a bunch sprint. Grishkin again beat Brett Aitken (Bicisport) with Kai Tsun Lam (Pocari Sweat) taking third, and the time bonus for winning means that Grishkin has a three second advantage over Kam Po Wong in the GC. The fourth stage of the Tour of South China Sea saw a lot of action and was a great race to watch. Numerous riders attacked the peloton and race leader Kam Po Wong, but nobody could make a decisive move. When the Hong Kong teams seemed to be satisfied with a group and did not chase, there would be other teams that were afraid they would miss the right break and chase the attackers down. The 5.5 km 'hotdog course' also did not suit the attackers. On the long straights it was impossible to stay out of sight. Many riders tried, but in vain. Then, near the end of the 110 km race, when King Nin Lau (Hong Kong National) and Sascha Richter (KED Bianchi Berlin) did get a gap, it looked like there would be some room for breakaways. After a few laps the two got the company of six others: Lam Kai Tsun, Han Xiaoyung, Cameron Hughes, Tim Decker, Michal Kesl and James Bennett. It looked like they could stay clear, but after a chase from the Japan National Team, the gap got much smaller and their chances diminished. When the Japanese had to sit up, Marco Polo riders Chris Baumann and Tim Wilson made their move. Baumann launched Wilson, who pulled through and managed to get to the leading group, together with Denny Schewe, Vladimir Bushanski and Hung Hsu Ying Chieh from Chinese Taipei. It looked like this would be the decisive break, as the field let go after the four riders had escaped. With three laps to go the difference was still around 50 seconds, with nobody looking interested in closing the gap. The Moscow team thought differently however. They waited a very long time, but with two laps to go they formed their train and brought the speed up. The field strung out and the leading group had to really keep moving. On the fast concrete roads in Guangzhou, the Russians where unstoppable and it looked like they would close the gap quickly. The leading group also increased their speed however and a short hesitation from the Moscow train, with just 1.5 km to go, gave them new hope. But Grishkin still had one fresh rider with him and that was enough. In the last 100 meters the fastest sprinters in the peloton where able to pass the riders from the leading group, resulting in a top ten with four riders of the leading group and six from the peloton. Aitken and Grishkin taking one and two and Lam Kai Tsun, a 19-year old rider from Hong Kong, who won the Chinese City Games earlier this year, was the surprising third rider crossing the line. The organisers of the Tour of South China Sea (Hong Kong Cycling Association, Chinese Cycling Association and Federacao de Ciclismo Macao) are doing a great job this year. The hotels are excellent, the logistics are going according to plan and all information is provided efficiently and quickly. This, together with the level of the race, the flat and fast courses, and the limited race distances, make the race a perfect preparation for the track riders who will be starting their season soon. The Hong Kong Cycle Classic on the 4th of January is still the talk of the day here, with big shots like David Millar and Bruno Risi coming (contrary to some media reports, Igor Astarloa and Alejandro Valverde will not be there) and US$60,000 prize money on offer.
