8th Tour of South China Sea - 2.5China, December 25, 2003 - January 1, 2004Stages listing Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - December 27: Longhua (Shenzhen), 88 kmRussians strong but Wong holds leadBy Gudo Kramer The 3rd stage in the Tour of South China Sea ended in a bunch sprint, with Russians Sergey Koudentsov and Oleg Grishkin (Moscow City Sports Association) taking the top two places in front of Australian Brett Aitken (Bicisport). The favourites for the final GC did not really move during the race and race leader Kam Po Wong and his Hong Kong compatriots did not give much space to the riders that tried to get away. At the end of the day, Wong held onto the leader's jersey with a seven second advantage over Grishkin. The Shenzhen stage was held in the town of Longhua, which hosts many of the world's biggest bicycle production factories. The Longhua Jin Xiu Jiang Nan Cup was held on a 4.4 km flat, super fast lap, suiting the track riders especially. There are many track riders in the Tour of South China Sea this year, as they prepare for the track season that will start soon. A break of four riders managed to stay away from the grouped peloton for a long time. King Nin Lau (Pocari Sweat Hong Kong National), Shuhai Song (Guangdong province team), Stanislav Kozubek (Ducla Praha) and Rob Conijn (Marco Polo amateurs) got a maximum lead of 55 seconds, but didn't have a real chance to win the race. With six laps to go, the peloton came back to them, as the Beijing-Macau team closed the final gap. After this, several other moves where made but never managed to go more then 100 meters up the road. The fast course simply did not suit the escapees and the Chinese teams especially reacted to everything. It did not bring them much though. The teams of Moscow and KED Bianchi showed they were well organised and built fast moving trains. The Russians stayed in charge and they won the sprint in a clear 1-2. \ Serguei Koudentsov won the race, Oleg Grishkin finished second, and with Brett Aitken taking third, the success of the track riders was complete. Koudentsov is 24 year old former Russian Champion points race and he is the Madison partner of Grishkin. The two will be preparing in Russia for the Athens Olympic Games. Grishkin will therefore not race with the Navigators team in the USA in 2004, which may be a big relief for many riders in the US, as he had great successes there. Grishkin also took over the lead in the points classification today, "I really want to prepare well for the Olympic Madison race and I think that I can do this better with a special track preparation. This race is perfect, as the stages are really fast and they give us a great preparation for the Russian track championships that start on the 18th of January. As we have no competition in our legs now, we may be suffering in some of the stages, but my legs feel better every day. The riders from Australia have a big advantage though, as it is their racing season now and they should be better prepared. I saw Kam Po Wong before this race only on the track, but it looks like this guy can do everything, sprint, climb, road track, he doesn't seem to care. It will be hard to beat him, but we will keep on following him and see if we get chances in the end." Kam Po is not too confident, "It is a really close race and some riders came closer again. Grishkin is on seven seconds now, there are four riders within 23 seconds, it will be hard to defend this all the race." PhotographyImages by Francis Cerny/Nikon Camera
