8th Tour of South China Sea - 2.5China, December 25, 2003 - January 1, 2004Stages listing Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - December 26: Wanchai - Tsing Yi (Hong Kong), 98 kmKam Po Wong hits the frontBy Gudo Kramer The second stage of the Tour of South China Sea brought local rider Kam Po Wong of Hong Kong to the lead. After a fairly calm start it looked like the field was in for a peaceful Boxing Day, but when it reached the Tsing Yi finishing circuit, the fighting began in earnest and it didn't stop until after the finish. The start was given near the Hong Kong Exhibition centre between the skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island. Through a tunnel the race went to the Kowloon side of the water, continuing to the Tsing Yi course. After reaching the course, it was Chris Bradford (World Wide Cycling) who lit the fire, followed by six other riders, but after a couple of laps this group was reeled in by the peloton. Immediately after this, the big guns started attacking, eager to make the race hard for tour leader Oleg Grishkin and his Moscow City team. Kam Po Wong of Hong Kong was with the first of the favourites that gave it a try. It took some laps though before the resistance of the field was broken and with four (out of 12) laps to go, four riders broke clear. Two Australians: Peter Milostic and Cameron Hughes (Bicisport), Jan Sipeky of Ducla Trencin and of course Kam Po Wong made the break. Despite some hard chasing by the field, the four stayed clear until the finish, although it was close by the end after a strong group of ten escaped from the peloton. The ten didn't manage to catch the four leaders by just nine seconds. Kam Po won the sprint of the first group easily and confidently ahead of Milostic, Hughes and Sipeky, while Martin Blaha from Ducla Praha came fifth and Marco Polo rider Masahiko Mifune won the field sprint for 15th. The Tour remains exciting! With six days of racing still to go, defending the jersey will be hard job for Kam Po, as he has strong and experienced riders like Milostic, Grishkin, Aitken and Krahl (Bianchi Berlin) close to him on GC.
