Sea Otter Classic - 2.3Monterey, California, USA, April 9 - 12, 2003Main Page Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 3 - April 11: Circuit race, Laguna Seca, 40 km/60 kmBessette and Creed take Laguna Seca Circuit RaceBy Kristy Scrymgeour What was originally supposed to be a criterium in downtown Santa Cruz today, the third stage of the Sea Otter Classic featured a circuit race on the Laguna Seca Raceway. Traditionally a featured stage, the circuit race was not on the schedule for this year until late yesterday afternoon when officials decided that the race needed to be made harder after stage one's nullification in the men's event. Even though the women completed the opening day's road stage, they too were forced to alter their race schedule, much to the disappointment of the sprinters who were looking for a stage win. Instead of a flat criterium, today's stage included a steep 500 meter climb as part of the 2.3 mile circuit of which the women raced ten laps and the men fifteen. Women: Bessette lights the fire after a slow startThe women's race started slowly in disgust that they too had to suffer due to the men's situation, however after five laps the race began to unfold. The Saturn girls went on the attack on the hill forcing Genevieve Jeanson (Rona-Esker) to chase. As the pace picked up the girls were rapidly getting dropped and the field split into two main groups. Over the next two laps Manon Jutras and Lyne Bessette both put in strong attempts to break away, however they couldn't lose Jeanson, who was right on every move. Finally with three laps to go Bessette attacked hard up the hill taking Jeanson with her and forming the decisive break. They worked hard together, Bessette happy to be moving up on Kimberly Bruckner (T-Mobile) on GC and Jeanson happy to be gaining more time on the field. "We shared the work," Jeanson said, "but Lyne did most of it." Bessette was happy with her win although said she had to work har.d "I attacked twice with a few laps to go and it took me a while to recover, I was lucky to have Ina's wheel to sit on, because it's the safest wheel to be on. So I recovered a half lap, and then when the bunch caught Manon and Genevieve they slowed down, so I just kept my rhythm and Ina said 'you have a gap, just go', so I went and Genevieve was there but she was the only one." T-Mobile was on the chase for the last three laps, with four riders on the front, but they couldn't make an impression until the last half lap where they brought the break to within thirteen seconds, enough to keep Bruckner in second place overall. In the final sprint it was Bessette taking the win over Jeanson, and Laura Van Gilder taking the field sprint for third place ahead of Magali LeFloch (Rona) and Sandy Espeseth (Victory Brewing). Men's race gets aggroThe men's race started with a lot more aggression. On lap two, Michael Barry (US Postal) and Mike Sayers (Health Net) got a 10 second gap, soon to be caught and countered by Michael Creed (Prime Alliance) and Chris Fisher (Jelly Belly) who made 20 seconds on the field. Behind them a chase group of three bridged the gap and formed a break, initially stretching out to 43 seconds. Joining Creed and Fisher were Dave Zabriskie (US Postal); Steve Larsen (Webcor); and Tom Danielson (Saturn). The pace was high as the Saturn team kept the break from growing again and the peloton was split into two and then three chasing groups. Saturn managed to bring back the break altogether and the bunch persisted with counterattacks, but it was Creed's attack at five laps to go that made the difference. With Danielson covering the move the two quickly opened up a gap of 43 seconds. With four laps remaining, US Postal attacked out of the chase group but without success. At that point the leading duo increased their lead to 1:04. With Saturn setting tempo behind to ensure that O'Neill kept the jersey, Danielson stopped working. With one lap to go, the gap held at 33 seconds, and Danielson put in one last attack at the base of the climb. Creed managed to stay on his wheel all the way to the top knowing that if he got over the hill he could win the sprint. "I was hurting so much up the hill, it was really hard, I think I only had one eye open and I was looking only at Tom's cassette, but I made it to the top, and from there I knew I could win." And he was right, as Creed outsprinted Danielson at the line for his first pro career win. "I'm very happy to win today, I am usually a helper, but today it worked out that I could get a result for myself." With the field rapidly closing behind them, it was super sprinter Gord Fraser (Health Net) taking the sprint for third ahead of Chris Horner (Saturn) and Barry. Tomorrow's stage is a long road race that winds around the Monterey Peninsula and Carmel Valley. PhotographyImages by Bob Wilson/Bob Wilson Photography
