Tour of Georgia - 2.3Georgia, USA, April 22-27, 2003Main Page Live report Results Previous stage Next stage Stage 1 - April 23: Augusta - Macon, 223kmVictorious Vogels grabs stage win and race leadBiskner hero for a day todayBy Tim Maloney, European Editor in Macon, Georgia Macon's pronounced with a short 'a' as in make, not with the long 'a' as in the city in France, but at times today's rolling countryside resembled France's Burgundy region with a multicolored peloton of cyclists racing along through stands of hardwood and by prosperous cattle farms flush with flowering alfalfa. Those verdant scenes alternated with red clay, piney woods and shotgun shacks that could only be in the American south. Although Wednesday's 223km Stage 1 for the Tour de Georgia from Augusta to Macon was billed as flat, it was nothing of the sort. The first "en-ligne" stage went up and down across rolling Georgia countryside and along with a crosswind, much of the racing today was "piano" until a mostly intact peloton hit the three finishing circuits in downtown Macon. Then the action got gnarly and split the 140 man peloton into pieces. In the final rush to the line, 29 year old Aussie Henk Vogels (Navigators) was the gnarliest of them all in the final rush and not only took the winner's bouquet but thanks to time bonuses, captured the race lead from fellow Aussie Nathan O'Neill by 1 second. "I let my legs do the talking today", the taciturn Vogels told Cyclingnews today after his double dip of success, while former yellow jersey O'Neill was philosophical about the turn of events in Macon. "Henk had it all to do and (Saturn) wasn't sure he could do it, but he did. But it's only one second and I told Henk that I would rather be one second behind him than one second ahead of him at this point." So far, that makes it two for two in the Tour de Georgia for the Aussies, who have shut out the homeboys, including two time USPRO champ Fred Rodriguez (Vini Caldirola). Rodriguez had bad luck today from the start (crashing on the first of three start circuits and subsequently being penalized 20 seconds for pacing) and at the finish. "That penalty wasn't right; I had nothing to gain from [pacing] but was just coming back after a crash." a disappointed Rodriguez told Cyclingnews. Plus the lack of adequate markings for the final kilometer confused the Caldirola rider. "There was no [kite] so we couldn't really tell where to sprint from," said Rodriguez, who ended up fourth but felt he might have won today and is determined to make his mark in the Tour de Georgia. Mexican sprinting flash Miguel Meza (Schroeder Iron) was runner-up and with his intermediate points pulled even with Vogels for the Tour de Georgia sprint jersey. "We're going to have a good battle, Henk and I... but I am a better climber so that might be an edge along the way," Mesa post-race. Saturn's Chris Horner donned the Tour de Georgia's Best Climber's jersey today; the Bend, Oregon father of three is enjoying his best form in years and told Cyclingnews, "I'm feeling great... I wish the finishing circuits could have been a little harder so we could have made more of a selection." Freckle-faced Horner looks boyish, but his power and talent may eventually carry him into the Yellow Jersey at the inaugural Tour de Georgia before the conclusion next Sunday in Atlanta. Horner's former teammate Floyd Landis (USPS) was positive after today's stage as well. "Well my legs are finally coming around; anyway they are better than last week," Landis told Cyclingnews after the stage. "Things got ugly on the final circuits with so many guys coming in together but I hung in there." Out on the roads of Georgia, a 20 year old from Santa Barbara was certainly the hero of the day with a most excellent 70km mile solo break. Nieko Biskner (Sierra Nevada-Clif Bar) went on a break after 100km miles of racing in what the French call an "exploit", but the 6ft 5in blond told Cyclingnews that it was all by chance. "I got away with some strong riders like Horner and after my first pull, I saw that I was alone. I looked back and saw the field was sitting up. I decided to go for it." Biskner's directeur sportif at Sierra Nevada-Clif Bar is Mike Neel; a guy who knows how to spot young talent. "Nieko is a big talent; he's a quiet kid and been sick a lot this year and is still taking antibiotics. That's what our program is about; to develop young talents like Nieko and take them to the next level," said Neel. With a maximum gap of almost seven minutes at the feed zone, Saturn put the tempo up and as the hammer man began to pound on Biskner's head, he started to lose time to the chase. Still, the lanky lad held on to his lead and took the Millidgeville sprint at 161km in front of a large crowd, but was vacumned up by Saturn soon thereafter. "I knew it was a gamble but I just went for it," said a wiped Biskner after the stage> He may have eventually lost 3.18 on the fast run-in to Macon but he won the Hero of the Day award for an audacious solo exploit on the roads of Georgia. Stage 2 from Macon to Columbus covers 202km and has a KOM sprint at the Little White House, the vacation home of US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Warm Springs after 123km before three finishing circuits in Columbus, home of Ft. Benning. PhotographyImages by Jonathan Devich/thefastrack.com
