Stage 3 - April 27: Tombstone road race, 65.4 miles

Miller, Jutras clinch Bisbee in hilly finale

The final stage of La Vuelta de Bisbee was decided this morning on the brutal climbs into and up Tombstone Canyon. Drew Miller was able to put enough distance between himself and GC leader Viktor Rapinski to seal top honors for the A men's race. Manon Jutras confirmed her win in the women's race with Katrina Grove and Dotsie Cowden riding hard to keep their own GC positions protected.

When racers gathered at the parking lot behind the Copper Queen Plaza to sign in for the start just before 8 this morning, temperatures were cooler than the last couple of days. But the dry Arizona sun had temperatures over 80 at the finish. There were two elements of the race that caused teams to strategize. The course this morning featured two severe sections of climbing; 14 miles and 1,500 feet into town then the 1,000 feet up Tombstone Canyon Road to finish. There were also two time bonuses up for grabs, the first a sprint through Wyatt Earp's adopted hometown of Tombstone, and the second for final placement in the stage. Each of the contending teams knew it would take strength and tactical positioning to win today.

Men: "The best man won"

The men's race rolled out through its neutral start with Viktor Rapinski in the leader's jersey. Gord Fraser sat 21 seconds back and Drew Miller, the leader of the race until yesterday's time trial, sat 35 seconds behind.

Saturn Cycling's Assistant General Manager Giana Roberge felt good about her team's current position atop both leader boards. "Viktor's so young, so talented," she said of Saturn's Belarusian star. And although he may not be the prototypical climber she felt he had a good chance to finish the race as strongly as he's run the entire weekend. "Maybe it's because he's from Belarus, but he's naturally tough. I've seen him suffer beyond what normal people can suffer."

Once racing began, a break of non-GC threat riders was allowed to go off the front and swallow up the sprint bonuses. When it got over two minutes ahead, Drew Miller's Landis/Trek/VW took control of the peloton to bring it back before the steepest climbing began.

"We needed to keep things in control," says Miller crediting his teammates for perfect execution of tempo at the front of the main pack. Once the break was caught and the climbing began, riders strung out along the course like leaves paper thrown into the wind. When the leaders first came into sight of the finish, nine miles from the finish as they passed under a traffic tunnel and continued on for a loop to bring them back around for the final climb, Miller had the lead with Mike Sayers close behind. Rapinski sat about 50 yards back and was clearly suffering.

Following the tunnel though was a short, steep downhill. "Viktor's a great descender," Miller said. "So it all came back together. We had to try and break him." Miller's approach when he reached the base of the final climb was "to give it everything I had."

Everything he had ended up being enough. Miller and Fraser's pace up Tombstone Canyon was too much for Rapinski and Miller crossed the line, two hands in the air, far enough ahead to take the overall win.

Gord Fraser came over and shook Miller's hand immediately. "The best man won," he said, adding that he wasn't surprised at the results. "Drew's strong. He placed well in Redlands. And this is what Drew and (Scott) Price have been training for all winter."

Rapinski's strong weekend of racing should leave Saturn Cycling optimistic about the depth of their team. Giana Roberege said before the race that this they had deliberately placed a thin contingent at LVDB. Their most famous riders are duking it out for glory on the streets of Georgia. She has team members resting in preparation for racing later in the season. She'll go on to the next event feeling good about Saturn's success this weekend

Women: Stahl-Schmidt causes ructions

The women's finale may have played out like a repetition of each event this weekend but didn't go down without drama. Saturn (with Manon Jutras in 1st) and T-Mobile (Dotsie Grove in second and Cowden in third) had positions to protect and since no result is ever assured in cycling, both had plans to execute. "Today complements (Jutras's) strength so I expect her to be able to defend," said Saturn's Roberge.

The wild card for both was fourth place Lynn Gaggiolli (VeloBella), a rider without teammates, only 29 seconds off Grove and just over a minute off Jutras with intentions of her own. "I feel the best today of any day so far," she said at the start. "It takes me a day or two to get going." Her strategy was to "watch Saturn and T-Mobile work each other and wait until they've worn each other out," then try to sprint for the win.

As with the men's A race, the women's sprint bonus was neutralized by a small break. After Tombstone, the race narrative follows Laura Stahl-Schmidt (Terry Precision). She attacked off the front. "I was about three and a half minutes out in the GC and just decided to go for it," she said. "I expected someone to go with me. Then I looked back and didn't see anyone with me." She decided that she "might as well go for it. I wanted every advantage I could get going into the climb."

Her effort opened a three-minute-plus gap and started to worry GC leaders. Jutras decided she'd better bridge it before Stahl-Schmidt gained too much advantage. "My teammates Amy and Megan managed the gap," she said. Grove, Cowden, and Gaggiolli covered. "I pulled through to the tunnel and then attacked first." The rest of the group would counter and Jutras would attack again. She kept the pressure all the way up Tombstone Canyon.

The pressure broke breakaway rider Stahl-Schmidt. Grove countered every move and stayed with Jutras but could gain no advantage on the climb. When Jutras gave a huge kick to power the final uphill straightaway, Grove knew her final position was safe. All that was left of team tactics was for Cowden to sprint against Gaggiolli to see who would take the best finish time bonus. It was Cowden at the line.

Jutras is encouraged by her result and is ready to move on to the Tour of the Gila and her next major race, Tour de L'aude in France. "I'm in race fitness now - and improving."

The rest of the day

The B (Masters) race went to Stage Prologue winner Doug Loveday when Stage 1 solo breakaway rider and GC leader Eric Sternlicht fell victim to today's aggressive pacing up the final climbs.

Podium presentation of LVDB's ceramic and bronze statues was at 2pm this afternoon. Bisbee's Mayor and other local notables were in attendance.

Racers had positive things to say about their experience this weekend. Most were challenged by the course, excited by the drama of their races, and pleased with the handling of the race. The double booking of the Tour of Georgia seemed doesn't seem like it will kill La Vuelta de Bisbee. In fact, race organizer Albert Hopper is happy with the way the weekend unfolded. He had an exciting finishing stage, a better turnout than the previous year, and an organization of officials, police, helpers, and volunteers who, although exhausted tonight from their efforts, are looking forward to next year.
