89th Tour de France - Grand TourFrance, July 6-28, 2002Stage profile Live report Results Previous Result Next Result Stage 14 - Sunday July 21: Lodève - Mont Ventoux, 221 kmArmstrong increases TDF lead againVery Virenque victory on VentouxBy Tim Maloney, European editor in Vaison-la-Romaine Lance Armstrong is enjoying a bullish Tour De France so far. As the US stockmarket suffered a massive 2 week slide of almost 15%, it's largest since 1987, while his Nike stablemate Tiger Woods was battering his driver into Muirfield links in frustration in the British Open, Lance Armstrong's stock has soared during the first two weeks of the 2002 Tour De France. Today, with just one week remaining until the finish in Paris, Armstrong has managed his quest for a 4th consecutive Tour victory like a young, dynamic CEO. High margins of victory, low expenditures of resources and delegating key roles to other riders like climbers Roberto Heras and Chechu Rubiera. But today on Sunday's ride up Le Mont Ventoux, with his USPS associates out of action on the terrible ascent of the Giant of Provence, the Maillot Jaune had to take care of business himself, making another key move at just the right time and taking another 1'46" out of his principal TDF rival Joseba Beloki and increasing his lead to 4'21". After the stage, the Maillot Jaune told the media that "I don't know...I rode as good as I could and as strong as I could, but Richard was stronger. It's not easy to ride the Ventoux all alone, so he deserves it. I think we're happy with what we did, we put some time into our rivals." Beloki also lost time to Raimondas Rumsas (LAM), who had great legs today and finished 4th on the stage, moving into 3rd on GC, 2'18" behind Beloki. Levi Leipheimer (RAB) had another good day on Stage 14, his 11th place putting the Montana man into 9th place on GC, while mega-loser of the day was Santi Botero (KEL). The Colombian, who was 5th GC this morning, didn't have great legs in the baking heat and punctured on the climb, finally losing 15' on GC to Armstrong. Domo-Farm Frites has been trying hard for a stage win in this year's Tour De France, with their GC leader Richard Virenque trying to breakthrough all during the Pyrenees. Today, the 32 year old Virenque got in the early break of the day and made his move for victory halfway up the ascent of the day up Le Mont Ventoux, taking his 5th career TDF stage win and first win of the 2002 season. "I think I showed today that I have a lot of courage", said the seldom modest Varois. "I want to thank the team for their support and I know that I'm not finished at all as a rider". How it unfoldedOn another suffocating summer day 35th years ago this July, Tom Simpson collapsed on Le Mont Ventoux on unlucky Stage 13 on July 13th, 1967. Three and a half decades later, today's Stage 14 was another long, hot ride for the Tour De France peloton. Starting in Lodeve in the Languedocian hinterlands the stage went into Provence with the final 23 km climb up the steep, mystical Le Geant de Provence awaiting at the conclusion of the 221 km stage, the third of 5 mountain top finishes at this TDF. A fast start came from a general bagarre on the initial uphill stretch up the climb to Saint-Maurice-Navac elles, where 11 man group managed to break away after 19 km. The pace didn't fade, as the 11 escapees raced the first hour in 44.9 km/h and two hours at 43.7 km/h. Virenque (DFF) was in on the move, with Cristian Moreni (ALS), Marco Serpellini (LAM), Bobo Botcharov (A2R), Mikel Pradera (ONE), Marco Velo (FAS), Thor Hushovd (CA), Dariusz Baranowski (BAN) and teammates Stéphane Augé and Christophe Edaleine (DEL). With such a fast pace and little motivation by the USPS peloton to chase the break of back markers, their lead ballooned to 12'03" after 111 km in Arpaillargues-Et-Aureillac. After the peloton passed through the feed zone, Rabobank and CSC-Tiscali joined the chase on the front of the peloton. The baking humid heat of Provence continued to mount as the white limestone rocks reflected the merciless summer sun on the speeding breakaway, and as the fugitives arrived in the famous wine growing region near Chateauneuf-de-Pape after 168 km, the gap had dropped to 9'50" with USPS, Rabobank and CSC-Tiscali all working hard to close the gap. Le Mont Ventoux loomed in the background, awaiting the Tour De Franc with open arms. Up the long drag past Bedoin, Moreni was hammering hard on the front and split the break in two before the steep part began. As the famous St. Esteve curve led up to the long steep pitch through the pine forest up to Le Chalet Reynard, the Alessio rider came off and then there were only 5 riders up front, with the USPS led peloton at 6'40". Virenque was again in the main move, with Baranowski, Pradera, Botcharov and Serpellini surviving. Pocket climber Botcharov looked strong; the tough little Russian likes hard conditions and the hot temps; the steep gradient was perfect for the AG2R man. His first attack dumped big Baranowski and gapped the others, but a desperate Virenque brought the others back to the Russian. Back in what was remained of the peloton, Chechu Rubiera was hammering away again with Maillot Jaune Armstrong on his wheel. With one third of the Le Mont Ventoux complete, there were only two men up front, as Bobo attacked again with 12.5 km to go and cracked Pradera, while Serpellini had already come off. A sweating, suffering Virenque clung to Botcharov, who was looking for his first breakthrough win. With the group Maillot Jaune at 5 minutes, back and 9 km to go, the determined Virenque somehow got a second wind and made the winning move, dropping the now suffering Botcharov. Virenque quickly got a 10' gap on the cooked Russian, but could the Varois hold off the onslaught from behind? Behind the Domo-Farm Frites man, Roberto Heras had cooked in the heat and dropped from the group Maillot Jaune. ONCE had isolated Armstrong; José Azevedo was setting a hard tempo, with Armstrong and Beloki on his wheel, followed by Baltic blonde Rumsas and surprisingly good Ivan Basso, clad in his white Best Young Rider jersey. Plus Francesco Mancebo (BAN) had now come up to the Maillot Jaune's group. Emerging from the scrubby pine woods at Le Chalet Reynard into the lunar last stretch up to the finish with 6.5 km to go, the struggling Virenque had 4'00 on the MJ group. Levi Leipheimer and Ivan Gotti were just coming up to this group when suddenly, Beloki attacked on a steep pitch 1 km before Le Chalet Reynard. Looking to test the isolated Armstrong, the ONCE man, who was riding a special lightweight bike with 650c wheels, made a fatal mistake. The Maillot Jaune quickly pounced on the ONCE rider's wheel, then turned the tables on Beloki, and counterattacked him hard. Armstrong dropped the Basque, decisively demonstrating just who was the boss of the 2002 Tour De France. As Armstrong went into overdrive, 1 km up the road with 4 km to go, Virenque was hanging on with 3'50" on the surging Texan, with Beloki desperately chasing the Maillot Jaune in the desolate treeless, lunar landscape. As he did last year winning Paris-Tours, despite his damaged reputation from L'affaire Festina, Virenque was showing his class today, suffering mightily as he heaved himself to and from on his sweat-soaked bike. With 3 km to race, Virenque still had 2'00 on Bobo, with Armstrong coming up fast. Armstrong had already taken another minute out of the Beloki group, containing his ONCE team-mate Pradera, Rumsas, Basso and Mancebo, who were struggling to limit their losses. Virenque passed the flower-bedecked Tom Simpson memorial with 1.5 km to go, and grimaced as he saw the TV tower looming ever closer. Armstrong maintained a regular pace chasing behind, while in the chase group, Rumsas saw that Beloki was in trouble and upped the pace with 2 km to go, dropping both the ONCE man and Mancebo, with only Basso able to follow the blond Lampre man's wheel. Rumsas was looking to put time into Beloki and move up GC, and today he had the legs and the will to do it. With a sour-looking Jean Marie LeBlanc behind him in the TDF Race Director's car applauding politely, France's most popular rider hurled himself over the finish line at the Observatory and into Domo soigneur Dirk Nachtergaele's arms. "I was worried about Armstrong, said Virenque. "I didn't have a radio so I didn't know exactly what was happening behind. I knew I was a bit slower so I had to give everything I could at the end. Botcharov held on for second at 1'58" , while Armstrong was 3rd at 2'20". Lampre's Marco Serpellini had held on for 4th at 3'00 with his teammate Rumsas 4th at 3'36". Beloki was croaky in the final up Ventoux; finishing 6th at 4'05", losing 1'46" to Armstrong in 7 km, or an incredible 15" per kilometre! Levi Leipheimer (RAB) had another solid ride today to finish 11th on the stage and move into 9th, 12'54" behind Armstrong but only 2'05" out of 5th place. Leipheimer is getting better every day in this year's Tour and a top five finish is still in reach at this point for the Rabobank rider. Mega-loser on the day was Santi Botero. Sitting fifth this morning, the Colombian had no legs today and combined with an untimely puncture on the final ascent, the Kelme rider lost over 13'00 to Armstrong, dropping 13 places on GC to 18th. With six stages to go in the 2002 Tour De France, Armstrong is still taking nothing for granted. Asked about being isolated on the final stages of the climb with no USPS teammates, the Texan explained that "It's not the best situation, but there weren't many riders left when Chechu was finally dropped. It's an ok situation, if I feel good, and today I felt very good so I wasn't stressed about that. In the end they did a great job." "Everybody talks about the three days in the Alps. Look at the day after that," declared Armstrong. "That's a hard day. Nobody thinks about days like that. Those are the things that worry me. I think we have a strong team for les Deux Alpes, for La Plagne, but then you have a day before the time trial. Not one meter is flat, you have seven or eight cols, it's a fairly long stage and it could be hot. Those are the days that worry you. I always worry about something." PhotographyPhotos by AFP
