Mapei sneak home in stage 1

The first stage of the Settimana Coppi-Bartali has been won by the Mapei-Quick Step team, who covered the 8.2 kilometre team time trial course along the sea front of Rimini in 9 minutes, 8.12 seconds. They edged out favourites Fassa Bortolo by 1.79 seconds, with Lampre-Daikin finishing in third spot at 4.2 seconds.

The individual leader's jersey was awarded to Dario Cioni, who was first across the line, followed by Aggiano, Evans, Noè and Wegelius.

"Today's win is an excellent sign of the team's form," said Cioni. "We'll probably loose the leader's shirt to a sprinter, this won't change our approach to the race - we're here to win as much as possible."
